It is a narrow, eastwest area about 20 miles long and lies mainly in southwestern Brewster County. The district is connected by graded road with the nearest railroad, 84 miles north of its center. Quicksilver minerals were first discovered in the district in the latter part of the 19th century, but there was no substantial production until 1900. Although there are about 20 mines and many prospects, more than 90 percent of the quicksilver came from the Chisos-Rainbow, Mariposa, and Study Butte mines. The most productive years were during World War I; since 1946 the district has been idle. Future production depends upon the discovery of new ore bodies-which will be costly-and the working of deposits now considered of too low grade to be profitable.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp312","usgsCitation":"Yates, R., and Thompson, G.A., 1959, Geology and quicksilver deposits of the Terlingua district, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 312, Report: v, 114 p.; 14 Plates: 51.43 x 14.70 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp312.","productDescription":"Report: v, 114 p.; 14 Plates: 51.43 x 14.70 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"130","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104427,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4295.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":402000,"rank":15,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-20.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401998,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-17.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401996,"rank":14,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-19.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401999,"rank":13,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-18.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401989,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401990,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401992,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401991,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401993,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401997,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-16.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401994,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401995,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-15.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":172862,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271157,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402002,"rank":17,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-22.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402001,"rank":16,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-21.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"31680","country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Terlingua District","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105,29 ], [ -105,30.5 ], [ -102,30.5 ], [ -102,29 ], [ -105,29 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db6842b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yates, Robert G.","contributorId":69525,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yates","given":"Robert G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222108,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thompson, George A.","contributorId":94288,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222109,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The sinter cake is leached with water, the resulting solution is filtered, and the filtrate is acidified with nitric acid. Chlorine is determined by titrating this solution with mercuric nitrate solution using sodium nitroprusside as the indicator. The titration is made in the dark with a beam of light shining through the solution. The end point of the titration is found by visually comparing the intensity of this beam of light with that of a similar beam of light in a reference solution.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60156a044","usgsCitation":"Peck, L.C., and Tomasi, E.J., 1959, Determination of chlorine in silicate rocks: Analytical Chemistry, v. 31, no. 12, p. 2024-2026, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60156a044.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"2024","endPage":"2026","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"31","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ff9ee4b0c8380cd4f2b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peck, L. Comparisons were made between the numbers of mice captured by a line of live traps and the numbers captured in intensive live trapping of a larger area surrounding the line.  Trials were made in bottomland woods where mice were numerous and in upland woods where mice were less common.       It was found that wood mice living in upland woods had significantly larger cruising ranges than those living in bottomland woods.  Consequently, a line of traps in the bottomlands captured mice from a smaller surrounding territory than in the uplands.  Therefore, comparisons of relative size of the mouse population in these two areas on the basis of line-trapping showed an erroneously large number for the upland woods.       As a result of these trials and the studies of other workers, it is concluded that lines of traps are not fully reliable means of measuring relative abundance of small mammals.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Fishery Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"El-Zarka, S.E., 1959, Fluctuations in the population of yellow perch, Perca flavescens(Mitchill), in Saginaw Bay Lake Huron: Fishery Bulletin, v. 59, no. 151, p. 365-415.","productDescription":"p. 365-415","startPage":"365","endPage":"415","numberOfPages":"50","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128722,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","issue":"151","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6aed47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"El-Zarka, Salah El-Din","contributorId":77087,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"El-Zarka","given":"Salah","email":"","middleInitial":"El-Din","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

By the time we bought it – for a pittance – only a few remnants of white pine remained from the magnificent stands made famous by the Paul Bunyan legend. In this part of Wisconsin the pines were, even originally, restricted only to patches of the better soil, and the variability of the glacial topography has resulted in an interesting mixture of prairie marsh, swamp woodlot, and sand hill.</p><p>We did not acquire this farm because it had great potential for growing crops. Rather we were interested in the variety of ecologic and topographic types, which, even within the confines of our property, represented a condensed version of the many different types of land in the Wisconsin countryside. The farm also has a very peculiar aesthetic and historical interest. Marquette’s canoes once slipped quietly past our favorite fishing hole on the river; passenger pigeons once roosted in our great oaks; and the few remaining white pines silhouetted against the sky-glow of evening made one think of the Round River and the Blue Ox.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Water Works Association","doi":"10.1002/j.1551-8833.1959.tb21165.x","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., 1959, Water resource development and management: Journal of the American Water Works Association, v. 51, no. 7, p. 821-827, https://doi.org/10.1002/j.1551-8833.1959.tb21165.x.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"821","endPage":"827","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338133,"rank":2,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/cir414B","text":"USGS Circular 414-B: The challenge of water management","linkHelpText":"This transcript was also published as a USGS Circular"},{"id":338113,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"51","issue":"7","publicComments":"An address presented on March 11, 1959, at the Illinois Section Meeting, Chicago, Ill, by Luna B. Association of ferroselite with selenian pyrite and marcasite within discrete areas of these uranium-vanadium deposits suggests an unusual environment of formation. Its association with apparent low temperature assemblages in the United States and Bussia indicates that its minimum temperature of formation is quite low. Chemical analyses of ferroselite agree well with the theoretical formula FeSe</span>2<span>; material from the Virgin no. 3 mine, Montrose County, Colorado, gives the formula FeSe</span>2.07<span>&nbsp;and that from the A.E.C. no. 8 mine, Temple Mountain, Utah, gives the formula (Fe, Co)Se</span>2.08<span>. The similarity of hastite and ferroselite suggests that a complete series FeSe</span>2<span>-CoSe</span>2<span>&nbsp;may exist. In contrast to this, pyrite associated with ferroselite apparently will camouflage only 4 per cent (molecular) FeSe</span>2<span>&nbsp;within its structure. Ferroselite cannot be distinguished from rammelsbergite (FeAs</span>2<span>) by X-ray or in polished section; therefore, the exact identification of these two minerals can be made only by specific tests for As or Se. At various places the&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">water </span>occurs under perched, unconfined, and confined conditions; at <span class=\"searchword\">some</span>&nbsp;places it occurs under all three conditions at different depths. Both initial and tectonic structural features, such as inclination of the flows, anticlines and synclines, and jointing and faulting, have an important bearing on occurrences of&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">ground</span><span class=\"searchword\">water</span>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">basalt</span>. Recharge of the&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">ground</span>&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">water</span>&nbsp;is most effective in areas of substantial rainfall where gravel-bedded streams cross&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">basalt</span>&nbsp;flows inclined at low angles. The chemical quality of the&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">ground</span><span class=\"searchword\">water</span>&nbsp;is good but varies according to the geographic and geologic occurrence of the&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">basalt</span>&nbsp;rocks. The&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">ground</span>&nbsp;<span class=\"searchword\">water</span>&nbsp;is developed by thousands of wells and springs.
