Theory and techniques","docAbstract":"<p>The small wavelengths used in electron-diffraction experiments and the thinness of the crystals necessary for the transmission of the electron beam combine to require a somewhat different diffraction geometry for the interpretation of electron-diffraction patterns than is used in the interpretation of X-ray diffraction patterns. This geometry, based on the reciprocal lattice concept and geometrical construction of Ewald, needed for the interpretation.\nof transmission electron-diffraction single-crystal patterns is here reviewed.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Transmission electron-diffraction single-crystal patterns of two monoclinic\nsubstances, colemanite [CaB<sub>3</sub>O<sub>3</sub>(OH)<sub>3</sub>•H<sub>2</sub>O] and potassium chlorate (KC10<sub>3</sub>), are examined and the .theory necessary for their interpretation is given in\ndetail. The study of these patterns furnishes a basis for the interpretation\nof single-crystal patterns of materials belonging to any crystal system. It\nis shown that useful unit-cell data, accurate to a few tenths of a percent,\ncan be obtained from the patterns of colemanite and KClO<sub>3</sub>. Although the proposal was not acted upon by the 82d Congree, there was considerable discussion of it in the press and in the technical literature. Among the latter were papers by Langbein (1953), Foster (1954), and by the Insurance Executive Association (1952). The paper by Langbein discussed flood insurance as a means of promoting wise use of the flood plain. Foster's paper reviewed his work for the Insurance Executive Association without, however, reaching any independent decision as to the workability of hydrologic techniques in an insurance program. The report of the Insurance Executive Association presented mainly the industries viewpoint that flood insurance is not feasible.
