About 700 square miles were mapped on the Navajo Indian Reservation. A resource appraisal of the area was an inherent part of the program, and is detailed in this report.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Production of vanadium and uranium is from two areas, the Monument No. 1 mine area in Navajo County, and the Monument No. 2 mine area in Apache County. In the period 1942-53 about 200,300 tons of ore was produced from these two areas. This ore yielded about 1,700,000 pounds of U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and about 6,500,000 pounds of V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>. The grade ranged from 0.15 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> to 0.60 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub>, and from 0.38 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> to 3.02 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>. The vanadium-uranium ratio is about 4:1.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The ore deposits are composed principally of the hydrous calcium-uranium vanadate tyuyamunite in basal channel sediments of the Shinarump member off the Chinle formation. Four types of ore bodies are present: (1) rods, (2) tabular ore bodies, (3) corvusite-type ore bodies, and (4) rolls.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The reserves of uranium- and vanadium-bearing material are classed as measured, indicated, inferred, and potential. The reserves are further divided into three grade classes for material 1 foot or more thick: (1) 0.10 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and 1.00 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and above; (2) 0.05 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and 0.50 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and less than 0.10 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and 1.00 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>; and (3) 0.01 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and 0.10 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> and less than 0.05 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> and 0.05 percent V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Measured reserves as of June 1953, in the Monument Valley area, Arizona, (all in the Monument No. 2 mine) total about 36,000 tons. Indicated reserves in the first grade class amount to about 62,000 tons. In this same grade class inferred reserves total about 3,000,000 tons. In the second grade class indicated and inferred reserves amount to about 2,000,000 tons. Inferred reserves in the third grade class total about 345,000 tons of mineralized material. Potential reserves in all grade classes for the Monument Valley area amount to about 13,000,000 tons.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>It is recommended that an extensive exploration program be carried out in the Monument Valley area, Arizona. This program would consist of two phases. The first phase would involve a geophysical survey of selected channels and would have at its principal objective the delineation of the trend, length, width, and depth of scour of the channels. The second phase would consist of a diamond-drilling program that would make use of the data secured by the geophysical survey. This drilling program would have as one of its principal objectives the determination of which channels are most likely to contain ore bodies. Restudy of the faunule from the calcareous quartzite (garnet zone) of the Bernardston Formation indicates that it is probably of Silurian rather than Devonian age. The upper part of the Clough Formation on Skitchewaug Mountain (garnet zone) in eastern Vermont contains tetracorals of Silurian or Devonian age. The Clough Formation on Croydon Mountain (sillimanite zone) in west-central New Hampshire contains tetracorals. This is a body of terrigenous clastic sedimentary rocks, which has minor intercalations of limestone and dolomite but no volcanic components or known fossils. The series is probably 30,000 feet or more thick. It lies unconformably on a basement of earlier Precambrian granitic and gneissic rocks, and on the northwest side of the mountains it is overlain by the Cochran formation, or basal unit of the Chilhowee group, which is of Cambrian and Precambrian(?) age. South of the mountains it is overlain by rocks of the Murphy marble belt; here, the top of the Ocoee is placed tentatively at the base of the Nantahala slate. The Ocoee series is divisible into three broad units of regional extent and contrasting lithologic character, which are herewith designated groups and named the Snowbird group, the Great Smoky group, and the Walden Creek group. The groups consist of local intergrading and intertonguing formations and have complex stratigraphic and structural relations. The Ocoee series is split by major thrust faults into three sequences, a southern, central, and northern, none of which contains more than two groups of the series. The lowest group, the Snowbird, is best developed in the central sequence where it is more than 13,000 feet thick; it is much thinner in the southern sequence. In both sequences it lies unconformably on granites and gneisses. Toward the east it is largely sandstone, but this is interbedded with and intertongues westward into finer-grained sandstone, siltstone, and argillaceous rocks. These differences permit the Snowbird group to be divided, in ascending order, into the Wading Branch formation, Longarm quartzite, Roaring Fork sandstone, and Pigeon siltstone. Toward the west the Snowbird is represented by more strongly metamorphosed rocks termed the Metcalf phyllite. Above the Snowbird group in the southern sequence is the Great Smoky group, more than 25,000 feet thick. The lower part, termed the Elkmont sandstone, is fine-grained sandstone. The middle part, termed the Thunderhead sandstone, is poorly sorted, coarse, feldspathic sandstone in graded beds. The upper part, termed the Anakeesta formation, includes many beds of dark argillaceous and silty rocks. South of the Great Smoky Mountains the Great Smoky group is overlain by the rocks of the Murphy marble belt. The Snowbird group in the central sequence is overlain in a few places by coarser-grained rocks. These somewhat resemble those of the Great Smoky group, but their stratigraphic relations to it are not demonstrable, so that they are left as unclassified parts of the Ocoee series. In one area such rocks are named the Rich Butt sandstone, in another the Cades sandstone. In the northern sequence the Walden Creek group, about 8000 feet thick, forms a varied assemblage of argillaceous and silty rocks and quartz-pebble conglomerate, with locally prominent quartzite, limestone, and dolomite. The Walden Creek group is divided, in ascending order, into the Licklog formation, Shields formation, Wilhite formation, and Sandsuck formation; the Wilhite is in turn divided into the Dixon Mountain member and Yellow Breeches member. The Walden Creek is overlain by the Chilhowee group of Cambrian and Precambrian(?) age but is in fault contact with the Snowbird group on the southeast; it is not in contact with the Great Smoky group. With the exception of the magnetite-siderite relationship, Eh is much more critical than pH. In general terms, hematite is stable under oxidizing conditions, siderite and magnetite under intermediate to moderately reducing conditions, pyrite under moderate to strongly reducing conditions, and iron sulfide under still stronger reducing conditions. Because of numerous variables involved the relative positions of the stability fields are stressed rather than their limits on the Eh and pH scales. The inclusion of a magnetite field suggests that magnetite should be much more important as a primary or diagenetic mineral in sedimentary rocks than has been commonly recognized. This is in accord with numerous recent suggestions to that effect. The organism grew well in culture. It developed and reproduced in&nbsp;</span><i>Triatoma protracta, T. infestans, T. phyllosoma</i><span>, and&nbsp;</span><i>Rhodnius prolixus</i><span>. Experimental infections were produced in raccoons, opossums, mice, rats, and monkeys by inoculation of blood, culture, and triatome forms. Typical leishmaniform bodies were found in tissue sections of cardiac muscle fibers from naturally and experimentally infected animals. Cross agglutinations carried out with living cultural forms and rabbit antisera demonstrated a close antigenic relationship between the raccoon trypanosome and&nbsp;</span><i>T. cruzi</i><span>&nbsp;(Brazil strain). On the basis of (1) morphology, (2) presence of leishmaniform tissue stages, (3) development in triatomes, (4) infectivity to a variety of mammals, (5) culture characteristics, and (6) cross reactions in serological tests, this parasite is considered conspecific with&nbsp;</span><i>Trypanosoma cruzi</i><span>&nbsp;(Chagas, 1909) the causative agent of American human Solutes in water are of particular interest to geochemists as sources of raw material for synthesis or as products of decomposition. When geochemical studies move from the laboratory into natural environment many variables relating to solute hydrology must be considered.</p><p>As a focal point there has been designed a graphical representation of solute hydrology, the solusphere, which embodies the concepts of land-water occurrence and movement on which are superimposed geologic, biologic, physical, chemical, and cultural processes affecting solutes. The solusphere is demonstrated by passing an imaginary plane through the centre of the earth. This plane intercepts concentric zones designated as rock flowage, saturation, aeration, surface activity, and atmosphere. Transport processes carry solutes within and between zones without alteration or conversion. However, whether stationary or in motion, the water's solute character is constantly subject to (1) alteration processes that change concentration by addition or subtraction of solutes or solvent without loss of solute identities, and (2) conversion processes that change the chemical state and form of solutes.</p><p>The geochemist is concerned with specific conversion processes, but he also must consider transport, alteration, and other conversion processes that are continually modifying the materials with which he is dealing in nature. Thirty-three islands, most of which are less than half a mile in length, are scattered along the eastern half of the peripheral reef. At least 75 patch reefs, most of which are small, nearly symmetrical mounds, rise to the surface of the lagoon. The peripheral reef and the patch reefs, composed largely of the stony structures of corals and coralline algae, have flat upper surfaces, apparently the result of bevelling by waves during a recent lowering of sea level. The islands on the peripheral reef are formed of partially consolidated stratified sediments composed of clastic limestone particles and the shells of marine animals. These islands are migrating lagoonward across the reef flat because of erosion on the seaward sides and the growth of beaches and bars on the opposite sides. Soils on the islands are poorly developed and retain much of the texture, structure, and composition of the parent rock or sediment. They consist chiefly of mechanical mixtures of carbonaceous material and lime gravel, lime sand, or lime mud. Phosphorite is present on some islands and is still forming locally where apatite derived from bird guano is reacting with limestones. The tidal fluctuation of ground-water lenses, determined on islands of several sizes, ranges from about 4 to 18 inches. In one very small island where the water is brackish, the rise is much greater. The time lag between tidal movements and the rise and fall of fresh water in the islands ranges from a few minutes on very small islands up to 5 hours on some large ones. This time lag is controlled by the permeability of rocks composing an island and varies from one area to another according to the distribution of rock types. The lagoon contains six concentric belts of bottom sediment; in each, the composition and texture depend on the depth of water in which it occurs. Lime sand and lime gravel derived for the most part from the shells of animals form most of the sediment, but a lime mud covers the bottom of the deepest parts of the lagoon.
