The water content of the obsidians is generally from 0.09 to 0.29 per cent by weight, though two samples from near Olancha, California, contain about 0.92 per cent. The relative deuterium concentration is from −4.6 to −12.3 per cent. The coexisting perlite contains from 2.0 to 3.8 per cent of water with a relative deuterium concentration of −3.1 to −16.6 per cent. The deuterium concentration in the perlites is not related to that in the enclosed obsidian. The deuterium concentration in the perlite water is related to the deuterium concentration of the modern meteoric water and the perlite water contains approximately 4 per cent less deuterium than does the groundwater of the area in which the perlites occur. The above relations hold true for perlites from northern New Mexico, east slope of the Sierra Nevada. California Coast Range, Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, and New Zealand. As the water in the obsidian is unrelated to meteoric water, but the enclosing perlite water is related, we believe that this is evidence for the secondary hydration of obsidian to form high water content perlitic glass.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(58)90059-0","usgsCitation":"Friedman, I., and Smith, R.L., 1958, The deuterium content of water in some volcanic glasses: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 15, no. 3, p. 218-228, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(58)90059-0.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"218","endPage":"228","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219080,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505baaa3e4b08c986b3228e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Friedman, I.","contributorId":95596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, R. Work on the Colorado Plateau uranium deposits is described as an example of what geochemical research, in conjunction with detailed field work, mineralogical studies, and related techniques can contribute to the understanding of a type of deposit. It is pointed out that not only have these studies given a great deal of information about the origin of the ores, but they have brought about directly a manifold increase in production and reserves of uranium in the United States. Indirectly, they aided the discovery of the tremendous deposits of the Blind River area in Ontario.

It is suggested that similar broad cooperative attacks could not only yield comparable results with other types of mineral deposits, such as laterites and Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits, but could also advance our knowledge and understanding of such diverse problems of geology and cosmology as the origin of granites, origin and geologic implications of meteorites (including tektites), origin and search for petroleum, and geochemical relations and interpretations of natural waters. For each of these problems methods of approach are outlined and for some of them, specific projects and correlative problems are mentioned.

It is further suggested that the broad cooperative attack needed for most of these problems might be fostered most effectively by a programme comparable to that of the I.G.Y., even though for most types of geochemical research synoptic sampling and observations are not as important as they are for many projects in geophysics.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(58)90078-4","usgsCitation":"Ingerson, E., 1958, The next decade in geochemistry: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 14, no. 3, p. 185-203, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(58)90078-4.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"185","endPage":"203","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218607,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"14","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bae19e4b08c986b323f05","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ingerson, E.","contributorId":48305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ingerson","given":"E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

For precise results, the rate of flow of test solutions through the reagent paper must be reproduced on successive runs, so that the same proportion of reaction products is collected each time on the confined spot. A simple apparatus gives a controlled rate of flow and makes possible the analysis of many samples at one time with good reproducibility. This apparatus utilizes the increasing pull, resulting from the gradual lowering of the water level in a tank, to draw a sample solution through a confined area of reagent paper at a reproducible rate. Application to the rapid determination of nickel with dimethylglyoxime and of copper with rubeanic acid provides a method for determination of as little as 0.06 γ of nickel and 0.03 γ of copper. The coefficients of variation are 14 and 22%, respectively. These absorption bands appear to be due to some crystal alteration of the potassium bromide as a result of the grinding process. They were less apt to occur when the coarser powder, which had received a relatively gentle grinding, was used. Window blanks prepared from the coarser powders showed smaller adsorbed water peaks and generally higher over-all transmittance readings than windows pressed from the very fine powders.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60144a014","usgsCitation":"Milkey, R., 1958, Potassium bromide method of infrared sampling: Analytical Chemistry, v. 30, no. 12, p. 1931-1933, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60144a014.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"1931","endPage":"1933","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218870,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7ea9e4b0c8380cd7a686","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Milkey, R.G.","contributorId":89125,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milkey","given":"R.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358966,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

An experimental investigation was conducted and chemical evidence was obtained that establishes the presence of U(IV) in apatite.

The following analytical procedure was developed for the determination of U(IV). Carbonatefluorapatite is dissolved in 1.5 M orthophosphoric acid at a temperature of 5°C or slightly below and fluorapatite is dissolved in cold 1.2 M hydrochloric acid (approximately 5°C) containing 1.5 g of hydroxylamine hydrochloride per 100 ml. Uranium(IV) is precipitated by cupferron using titanium as a carrier. The uranium in the precipitate is separated by use of the ethyl acetate extraction procedure and determined fluorimetrically. The validity and the limitations of the method have been established by spike experiments.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(58)90044-9","usgsCitation":"Clarke, R.S., and Altschuler, Z., 1958, Determination of the oxidation state of uranium in apatite and phosphorite deposits: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 13, no. 2-3, p. 127-142, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(58)90044-9.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"127","endPage":"142","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219324,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"13","issue":"2-3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ffd9e4b0c8380cd4f416","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clarke, R.
