The major limestone aquifers are the Cockeysville and Wakefield marbles and the Silver Run, Tomstown, Frederick, Grove, Waynesboro, Elbrook, Conococheague, Beekmantown, Stones River, Tonoloway, Helderberg and Greenbrier formations. Drilled and dug wells and springs are common sources of water supply in the limestone areas. The depths of 298 limestone wells range from 8.7 to 1,800 feet and average about 150 feet. The yields of these wells range from 0.1 to 575 gpm. Specific capacities, or yield per foot of drawdown, range in 137 wells from 0.1 to 43 gpm per foot. Springs are common in the limestone areas and their flow varies widely at different times. Most of the known springs are of the 5th magnitude or lower, and therefore have a mean flow of less than 100 gpm. The quality of water from the limestone aquifers is satisfactory for most purposes, but is commonly hard and slightly alkaline. The titanium is in leucoxene.</span></p><p><span> The sedimentary rocks of the district are highly folded, and the main iron-formation serves as the reference for relative stratigraphic position. The strata older than the main iron-formation are light-gray argillite and siltstone with local lenses of quartzite near the upper contact; the older strata contain about 0.5 percent titania. The main iron-formation is a persistent layer of chemically precipitated ferruginous sediments that contain about 0.2 percent titania. The strata younger than the main iron-formation are gray or black argillite, partly carbonaceous, partly ferruginous, and are transitional into lenses of lean upper iron-formation. At the base of the younger strata, 250-350 feet of argillite and slate contain 1-3.7 percent titania and average 2.0 percent. This titaniferous argillite is similar to argillite higher in the younger sequence which contains less than 1.5 percent titania and averages about 1 percent. There are weathered rocks interpreted as tuffs and basalt flows locally interlayered near the bottom of the titaniferous zone. The basalt contains 1-2 percent titania. The high titania content of the 250-350-foot zone suggests a volcanic origin; the argillite probably is reworked basaltic pyroclastics. With the development of the methods employed in modern mass control came the introduction of new toxicants, well-adapted for use against insects because of their potency, low cost and wide availability. The shallow lakes can often provide a suitable summer water supply, but only the deeper lakes provide a significant water supply throughout the year.</p><p>The water in the individual lakes is in an essentially isothermal state during the ice-free period that lasts from late June until September. The maximum temperature recorded in a lake near Barrow in 1954 was about 12°C. When ice formation begins, the temperature of the body of water as a whole may be only a few tenths of a degree above 0°C. Once the lake surface is iced over, the water temperatures may rise rapidly as much as 2°C, apparently owing to radiated heat received through the ice. The heating is terminated by a sudden cooling that coincides with the covering of the ice by a thin blanket of snow. This cooling is followed in turn by a second warming of the bottom and near-bottom water that takes place gradually over a period of weeks. The bottom sediments beneath the lake are the source of heat. The magnitude of the second rise and the time during which it takes place depend on the distance from shore and the depth of water. A gradual cooling takes place during the balance of the winter. Valleriite, gold and sphalerite are minor primary minerals; chalcocite and violarite or bravoite are supergene minerals. Pyrrhotite and pyrite are absent. From the textural relations it is inferred that a complex copper-nickel-iron sulfide was deposited early. On cooling, the sulfide unmixed into two different complex sulfides, one of which in turn unmixed into chalcopyrite and cubanite, the other into chalcopyrite and pentlandite. The latter exsolution relationship has not been previously reported. Valleriite either exsolved from, or replaced, chalcopyrite. Late solutions altered the niccolite to maucherite, and introduced gold and magnetite. Recent improvements in circuitry and development of semiquantitative analytical techniques permit a more comprehensive evaluation of the geologic distribution of radioactive materials that may prove useful in exploration for other minerals and in regional geologic studies. It is shown that placer deposits of heavy minerals can be detected from the air, and that the geometric configuration and average grade of the surficial part of the deposit can be approximated. Uranium-bearing phosphorite deposits may be similarly evaluated. Airborne surveys over the Coastal Plain area, Texas, show that\nthe radioactivity profiles in some instances reflect the lithologic character of the underlying rocks. The sandstones are generally low in radioactivity (≈ 10 ppm equivalent uranium), the clays and tuffaceous rocks relatively higher. The intrinsic radioactivity of some lithologic units is sufficiently uniform and distinctive in character to permit their identification and lateral correlation on the airborne survey records. The full discharge of the Survey's responsibilities is attained only by making its acquired knowledge available promptly and effectively to all people who will find it of interest and use. And, to insure effectiveness, reports must be not only accurate but so clearly and simply written that they are easy to read and understand.</p>\n<p>Efforts by the Geological Survey to attain high quality in reports are necessarily group efforts. The largest contribution is made by the author, who has assembled facts, has worked out ideas to explain them, and has a direct personal interest in making the facts and ideas clearly and effectively known. The Geological Survey encourages that interest, recognizing that it is an essential ingredient of the high morale of the members of the Survey. Authors should keep in mind, however, that the Survey has a proprietary interest in all their manuscript reports and as proprietor may dispose of the reports, or require that they be changed before publication, as it sees fit. The Survey generally exercises its proprietary interest only to the extent of seeing that a report is scientifically and technically sound, will reach the proper audience, and will reflect credit on both the Survey and the author. To these ends, each report is reviewed by the author's fellow workers, supervisors, and staff officials, who bring to bear upon it their specialized knowledge, skill, judgement to assure a sound product. In its final form each Survey report is that product of team effort in which many persons do their share -- even though most of them remain anonymous.</p>\n<p>There is no easy way to prepare reports of high quality, any more than there is an easy means of carrying out research to sure and outstanding conclusions. Each task calls for intensive thinking and for preserving work. The author bears the primary responsibility and correspondingly faces the most difficult task. To aid him is the chief purpose of this volume.</p>\n<p>The subject matter of this volume is arranged under several principal headings. First, a summary is given of the Survey's publications: the historical basis for them, statistics as to what has been issued in the periods 1879-1957, and a list and description of the several series of reports and maps in which material is being published. Next are outlined successive steps that the author will normally take from the start of a project to his final proofreading of the text and illustrations. Under the third broad heading is brought together much detailed information about the form and content of reports. The fourth part of this volume is devoted to advice on expression -- what to seek and what to avoid. A fifth major part of this volume bears on the most common questions of typographic style that affect Survey publications.
