The method is selective for the determination of up to 30 mg. of tantalum pentoxide, and tolerates relatively large amounts of scandium, yttrium, cerium, titanium, zirconium, thorium, vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, iron, aluminum, gallium, tin, lead, antimony, and bismuth. The separation of tantalum from niobium and titanium is not strictly quantitative, and correction is made colorimetrically for the small amounts of niobium and titanium co-precipitating with the tantalum. The method was applied to the determination of tantalum in tantaloniobate ores.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60144a056","usgsCitation":"Grimaldi, F.S., and Schnepfe, M., 1958, Semimicrodetermination of tantalum with selenous acid: Analytical Chemistry, v. 30, no. 12, p. 2046-2049, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60144a056.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"2046","endPage":"2049","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218867,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b8d11e4b08c986b318252","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grimaldi, F. For precise results, the rate of flow of test solutions through the reagent paper must be reproduced on successive runs, so that the same proportion of reaction products is collected each time on the confined spot. A simple apparatus gives a controlled rate of flow and makes possible the analysis of many samples at one time with good reproducibility. This apparatus utilizes the increasing pull, resulting from the gradual lowering of the water level in a tank, to draw a sample solution through a confined area of reagent paper at a reproducible rate. Application to the rapid determination of nickel with dimethylglyoxime and of copper with rubeanic acid provides a method for determination of as little as 0.06 γ of nickel and 0.03 γ of copper. The coefficients of variation are 14 and 22%, respectively. This method has wide applicability in more rapid and convenient determination of trace amounts of many metals.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/ac60136a026","usgsCitation":"McCarthy, J.H., and Stevens, R., 1958, Apparatus and technique for multiple tests by the confined-spot method of colorimetric analysis: Application to field estimation of nickel and copper: Analytical Chemistry, v. 30, no. 4, p. 535-538, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60136a026.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"535","endPage":"538","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218801,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ec76e4b0c8380cd492ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCarthy, J. Work on the Colorado Plateau uranium deposits is described as an example of what geochemical research, in conjunction with detailed field work, mineralogical studies, and related techniques can contribute to the understanding of a type of deposit. It is pointed out that not only have these studies given a great deal of information about the origin of the ores, but they have brought about directly a manifold increase in production and reserves of uranium in the United States. Indirectly, they aided the discovery of the tremendous deposits of the Blind River area in Ontario.

It is suggested that similar broad cooperative attacks could not only yield comparable results with other types of mineral deposits, such as laterites and Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits, but could also advance our knowledge and understanding of such diverse problems of geology and cosmology as the origin of granites, origin and geologic implications of meteorites (including tektites), origin and search for petroleum, and geochemical relations and interpretations of natural waters. For each of these problems methods of approach are outlined and for some of them, specific projects and correlative problems are mentioned.

It is further suggested that the broad cooperative attack needed for most of these problems might be fostered most effectively by a programme comparable to that of the I.G.Y., even though for most types of geochemical research synoptic sampling and observations are not as important as they are for many projects in geophysics.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(58)90078-4","usgsCitation":"Ingerson, E., 1958, The next decade in geochemistry: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 14, no. 3, p. 185-203, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(58)90078-4.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"185","endPage":"203","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218607,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"14","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bae19e4b08c986b323f05","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ingerson, E.","contributorId":48305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ingerson","given":"E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the prairie provinces of Canada the incidence and intensity of T. crassus infections in the commercially important whitefishes constitute a serious economic problem.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Parasitologists","publisherLocation":"Lawrence, KS","doi":"10.2307/3274650","usgsCitation":"Uzmann, J., and Hesselholt, M.N., 1957, New host and locality record for Triaenophorus crassus forel (Cestoda: pseudophyllidea): Journal of Parasitology, v. 43, no. 2, p. 205-208, https://doi.org/10.2307/3274650.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"205","endPage":"208","numberOfPages":"4","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":489028,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3274650","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":312715,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada, United States","state":"Alaska, British Columbia, Northwest Territories","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -168.046875,\n 54.41892996865827\n ],\n [\n -168.046875,\n 71.01695975726373\n ],\n [\n -114.60937499999999,\n 71.01695975726373\n ],\n [\n -114.60937499999999,\n 54.41892996865827\n ],\n [\n -168.046875,\n 54.41892996865827\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"43","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"567a7432e4b0a04ef490fcc7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Uzmann, J. Protein and mineral levels are lower and lipid values are higher in hatchery fish than in wild fish. As the period of artificial rearing is increased, these differences become more extreme. In hatchery fish, there is generally more microscopically visible fat in the liver and viscera than in these organs in wild fish although extremes are seen in both groups. In young hatchery fish and in wild fish, there is no correlation between fat deposition in the liver and in the pancreas, but in older hatchery fish, both of these organs are fatty and there is a simultaneous increase in total body lipid. In wild fish, ceroid deposition is greater, suggesting that the fatty acids are more highly unsaturated. There is little difference in disease incidence between the two groups, but parasitism is more pronounced in wild fish.

The significant variables between wild and artificially produced fish appear to be limited to diet and environment. There was a close correlation between the body composition of hatchery-raised fish and the composition of the diets fed. Beryl has also been reported in the Marietta district, Mineral County; the Sylvania district, Esmeralda County; near Crescent Peak and near Searchlight, Clark County, Nev.; and in the Painted Desert area near Hoover Dam, Mohave County, Ariz.
\n
Pegmatites are abundant in the Ruby Mountains, chiefly in the area north of the granite stock at Harrison Pass. In the Dawley Canyon area of 2.6 square miles at least 350 pegmatite dikes more than a foot thick were mapped and beryl was found in small quantities in at least 100 of these dikes. Four of these dikes exceed 20 feet in thickness, and one is 55 feet thick. A few pegmatites were also examined in the Corral Creek, Gilbert Canyon, and Hankins Canyon areas in the Ruby Mountains.
\n
The pegmatite dikes in the Dawley Canyon area intrude granite and metamorphic rocks which consist chiefly of quartzite and schist of probable Early Cambrian age. The granite is of two types: a biotite-muscovite granite that forms the main mass of the stock and muscovite granite that occurs in the metamorphic rocks near the borders of the stock. The pegmatites were emplaced chiefly along fractures in the granite and along schistosity or bedding planes in the metamorphic rocks.
\n
Many of the Dawley Canyon pegmatite dikes are zoned, having several rock units of contrasting mineralogy or grain size successively from the walls inward. Aplitic units occur either as zones or in irregular positions in the pegmatite dikes and are a distinctive feature of the Dawley Canyon pegmatites. Some of the aplitic and fine-grained pegmatite units are characterized by thin layers of garnet crystals, forming many parallel bands on outcrop surfaces. The occurrence of aplitic and pegmatitic textural varieties in the same dike presumably indicates abrupt changes in physical-chemical conditions during crystallization, such as changes in viscosity and in content of volatile constituents.
\n
Concentrations of 0.1 percent or more beryl, locally more than 1 percent, occur in certain zones or parts of zones in the Dawley Canyon pegmatites. Spectrographic analyses of 23 samples indicate that the BeO content ranges from 0.0017 to 0.003 percent in the muscovite granite, from 0.0013 to 0.039 percent in aplitic zones in pegmatite, from 0.0005 to 0.10 percent in coarse-grained pegmatite, and from less than 0.0001 to 0.0004 percent in massive quartz veins.
\n
The scheelite-beryl deposits at Oreana and in Humboldt Canyon, Pershing County., are rich in beryllium. Twelve samples from the Humboldt Canyon (Lakeview) deposit range from 0.018 to 0.11 percent BeO, but underground crosscuts have failed to intersect similar rock at depth. Beryl locally constitutes as much as 10 percent of the pegmati tic ore at Oreana. The beryl was not recovered during tungsten mining at Oreana and is now in the tailings of the mill at Toulon, Nevada, in lower percentages than the Oreana ore because of dilution by tailings from other ores milled at Toulon.
\n
Beryl has been found in numerous pegmatite dikes in the Virgin Mountains. Both beryl and chrysoberyl occur in dikes in the Hummingbird claims, north of Virgin Peak, in Mohave County, Ariz. Spectra graphic analyses of five representative samples of the principal dike on the Hummingbird claims range from 0.055 to 0.11 percent BeO.
\n

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington,
