The method is selective for the determination of up to 30 mg. of tantalum pentoxide, and tolerates relatively large amounts of scandium, yttrium, cerium, titanium, zirconium, thorium, vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, iron, aluminum, gallium, tin, lead, antimony, and bismuth. For precise results, the rate of flow of test solutions through the reagent paper must be reproduced on successive runs, so that the same proportion of reaction products is collected each time on the confined spot. A simple apparatus gives a controlled rate of flow and makes possible the analysis of many samples at one time with good reproducibility. This apparatus utilizes the increasing pull, resulting from the gradual lowering of the water level in a tank, to draw a sample solution through a confined area of reagent paper at a reproducible rate. Application to the rapid determination of nickel with dimethylglyoxime and of copper with rubeanic acid provides a method for determination of as little as 0.06 γ of nickel and 0.03 γ of copper. The coefficients of variation are 14 and 22%, respectively. This method has wide applicability in more rapid and convenient determination of trace amounts of many metals.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/ac60136a026","usgsCitation":"McCarthy, J.H., and Stevens, R., 1958, Apparatus and technique for multiple tests by the confined-spot method of colorimetric analysis: Application to field estimation of nickel and copper: Analytical Chemistry, v. 30, no. 4, p. 535-538, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60136a026.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"535","endPage":"538","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218801,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ec76e4b0c8380cd492ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCarthy, J. Sodium and potassium can be separated from the other constituents of silicate rocks by cation exchange resin (Amberlite IR-120). The sample is decomposed with hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids and passed through the resin bed after expulsion of the fluorine. The column is eluted with 0.12N hydrochloric acid at a fast flow rate of 4 ml. per sq. cm. per minute and the sodium and potassium are recovered together within a reasonable time. Other constituents of the sample, except silica, can be determined on the same portion of sample.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60144a019","usgsCitation":"Reichen, L., 1958, Use of ion exchange resins in the analysis of rocks and minerals: Separation of sodium and potassium: Analytical Chemistry, v. 30, no. 12, p. 1948-1950, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60144a019.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"1948","endPage":"1950","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219258,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bbf2fe4b08c986b3299e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reichen, L.E.","contributorId":58389,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reichen","given":"L.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359342,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

I. Chemical and histological studies of wild and domestic fish","docAbstract":"<div id=\"sp0005\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">Salmonids reared under artificial conditions show marked consistent differences in body composition in comparison with wild salmonids. Protein and mineral levels are lower and lipid values are higher in hatchery fish than in wild fish. As the period of artificial rearing is increased, these differences become more extreme. In hatchery fish, there is generally more microscopically visible fat in the liver and viscera than in these organs in wild fish although extremes are seen in both groups. In young hatchery fish and in wild fish, there is no correlation between fat deposition in the liver and in the pancreas, but in older hatchery fish, both of these organs are fatty and there is a simultaneous increase in total body lipid. In wild fish, ceroid deposition is greater, suggesting that the fatty acids are more highly unsaturated. There is little difference in disease incidence between the two groups, but parasitism is more pronounced in wild fish.</div><div id=\"sp0010\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">The significant variables between wild and artificially produced fish appear to be limited to diet and environment. II. Studies on production diets","docAbstract":"<div id=\"sp0005\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">In 69 production diets fed to hatchery salmonids, there was a wide variation in the ingredients of the diets and in their content of protein, fat, carbohydrate and ash. There was a close correlation between the body composition of hatchery-raised fish and the composition of the diets fed. The data indicated, however, that differences in hatchery management, such as level of feeding, were also important contributing factors in producing the observed body composition of hatchery fish. Wild fish had a markedly different body composition characterized by a much lower level of fat and relatively higher protein and mineral content</div><div id=\"sp0010\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">The effect on survival of differences in body composition between wild and hatchery fish is discussed. There is a clearly defined need for additional research on the nutritional requirements of salmonids, the relationship between body composition and ability to survive, and for quality control in hatchery nutrition.</div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1093/jn/61.4.479","usgsCitation":"Wood, E.M., Yasutake, W.T., Woodall, A., and Halver, J., 1957, The nutrition of salmonid fishes. A decreased growth rate (Gutsell and Snieszko 1949, Snieszko and Wood 1955), the production of drug resistant strains of pathogens (Snieszko 1952), sterility and kidney damage (Wood et al., 1955), and mortalities (Johnson and Brice 1953) have been described. Recently, increased mortalities and tissue damage were observed in young silver salmon after a single day's treatment with sulfamethazine. Subsequently an attempt to reproduce the conditions experimentally was made. The purpose of this paper is to describe the pathology of acute sulfamethazine toxicity and to discuss certain factors of possible importance in the etiology of losses among fish treated with sulfonamides.</p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Department of Commerce, Bureau of Fisheries","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1957)19[64:ASTIYS]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Wood, E.M., Yasutake, W.T., and Johnson, H.E., 1957, Acute sulfamethazine toxicity in young salmon: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 19, no. 2, p. 64-67, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1957)19[64:ASTIYS]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"64","endPage":"67","numberOfPages":"4","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":312806,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"567bd3b8e4b0a04ef491a1de","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wood, E.
