Cane Branch and Helton Branch in McCreary County, Kentucky, are about 1.4 miles apart (fig. 1). Can Branch, which is about 2.1 miles long, emptied into Hughes Fork of Beaver Creek. Its watershed area of about 1.5 square miles lies largely in the Wiborf 7 1/2-minute quadrangle (SW/4 Cumberland Falls 15-minute quadrangle), but the downstream part of the area extends northward into the Hail 7 1/2-minute quadrangle (NW/4 Cumberland Falls 15-minute quadrangle). Helton Branch, which is about 1.1 miles long, has two tributaries and empties into Little Hurricane Fork of Beaver Creek. It drains an area of about 0.8 square mile of while about 0.5 square mile is in the Hail quadrangle and the remainder in the Wilborg quadrangle. The total relief in the Can Branch area is about 500 feet and in the Helton Branch area about 400 feet. Narrow, steep-sided to canyon-like valley and winding ridges, typical of the Pottsville escarpment region, are characteristic of both areas. Thick woods and dense undergrowth cover much of the two areas.

Field mapping was done on U.S. Geological Survey 7 1/2-minute maps having a scale of 1:24,000 and a contour interval of 20 feet. Elevations of lithologic contacts were determined with a barometer and a hand level. Aerial photographs were used principally to trace the cliffs formed by sandstone and conglomerate ledges. Exposures, except for those of the cliff- and ledge-forming sandstone and conglomerates, are not abundant. The most complete stratigraphic sections (secs. 3 and 4, fig. 2) in the two areas are exposed in cuts of newly completed Forest Service roads, but the rick in the upper parts of the exposures is weathered. To supplement these sections, additional sections were measured in cuts along the railroad and main highways in nor near the watersheds.

Preliminary search of reported methods of Sr analysis revealed several investigations which have been made for the determination of Sr with the flame photometer, both at relatively low concentrations (0 to 50 ppm Sr) and at higher concentrations. Generally the procedures described involved measurement of Sr emission at either 460.7 mu or at 681 mu. There is disagreement among those reporting methods for Sr as to the preference of the one wavelength over the other. The 681 line (or band) seems to be preferred because of its greater reproducibility and relative freedom from interference. The 460.7 mu line, however, lies in the region of greater sensitivity of the photomultiplier tube, and hence for this reason is preferred by some. This is an advantage, of course, when determining Sr at very low concentrations.

This investigation is concerned with determining the optimum conditions for the determination of Sr at low concentration levels in water samples. Early experimental work indicated a greater sensitivity for the 460.7 mu (hereafter designated as 461 mu) Sr line. Therefore, most of the subsequent work was based on a study of the effects of various other materials and conditions on the emission of Sr at this wavelength.

This report is the seventh in a a continuing series of progress reports giving the results of discharge measurements made at selected springs and streams in the Tecolote Tunnel are area of the Santa Ynez Mountains. The mountains. The measurement program was begun on its present scale in the latter part of 1948 by the Geological Survey at the request of the Santa Barbara County Water Agency and is being continued under a cooperative agreement whereby each agency pays half the cost of the investigation.

The purpose of the program is to obtain sufficient factual data to determine what effect, if any, the inflow of ground water into Tecolote Tunnel will have on the flow of springs and streams in the vicinity of the tunnel. The area involved in the study, shown by plate 1, was made large enough to include a number of springs and steams believe to be outside the zone of influence of the tunnel.

Tecolote Tunnel, completed late in 1955, was built by the Bureau of Reclamation for the purpose of conveying water stored in Cachuma Reservoir to the city of Santa Barbara and adjacent coastal communities. The alinement of the tunnel is roughly north and south through the center of the arbitrarily chosen study area which extends from the Painted Cave area on the east to Refugio Pass on the west and from the Santa Ynez River on the North to the Pacific Ocean on the south.

The purpose of this report is to make available the factual data obtained from July 1954 to June 1956, together with a brief presentation of precipitation, springflow, and tunnel outflow for the entire period of investigation.

This report is a result of a study of the results of a test-drilling program conducted by the Alaska Department of Health to determine whether a ground-water supply is available in the village of Bethel, Alaska. The U. S. Geological Survey was asked to assist in evaluating the available information on the geology, the ground-water possibilities at the village, and the results of drilling a deep test well, as part of the program of determining the ground-water resources of Alaska.

There has been little ground-water development in the part of Alaska that includes the Bethel area, and very little was previously known of ground-water conditions there. Cederstrom (Cederstrom, D. J., 1952, Summary of Ground-Water Development in Alaska, 1950: U. S. Geol. Survey Circ. 169, p. 29-3C) summarized the information available for the village of Bethel as of 1950. At that time the villagers were using the Kuskokwim River for their water supply, and that use has continued to the present.

This report describes the subsurface materials and ground-water conditions at Bethel (fig. 1) and in the immediate vicinity as interpreted in the light of recent drilling of an Alaska Department of Health test well (no. 14 in this, report). The area surrounding the village was included in the investigation because of the information available on existing wells and tent holes drilled in that area. The files of the Ground Water Branch of the Geological Survey at Anchorage contained records of a few of the wells and test holes drilled prior to the time of this investigation (see fig. 2 for well and test-hole locations). Additional water samples were obtained and analyzed at the laboratory of the Geological Survey at Palmer, Alaska, to supplement the analyses already on file. Supplementary well information was kindly furnished by the following: Project Engineer at the U. S. Air Force Station, Resident Engineer at the Alaska Native Health Service Hospital, Mr. Clarence Marsh of the Alaska Road Commission, Bethel, Mr. Schmidt, local water purveyor, and Mr. Elmer Nicholson, Northern Consolidated Airlines, Inc. bush pilot.
