Sedimentary rocks of the Late Jurassic Morrison formation, the Early Cretaceous Kootenai formation, and the Early Cretaceous lower part of the Colorado formation, crop out in the northwest part of the quadrangle. The batholithic rocks include early stage quartz monzonite, intermediate or main stage quartz monzonite and granodiorite, and late stage aplite and alaskite. The rocks of the main stage are in discontinuous layers approximately conformable to the folded Elkhorn Mountains volcanics that form the roof of the batholith, and may be part of a sill-like body rather than of a batholith in the classic sense. Metamorphic changes in the roof rocks are not conspicuous except in one stratigraphic unit that probably was especially susceptible to thermal reorganization.
The batholithic rocks and Elkhorn Mountains volcanics are jointed, and are cut by faults that trend about east, north, N. 20° E., northeast, and northwest. The east-trending faults are most abundant, especially in the eastern part of the quadrangle, and cut only the batholithic and pre-batholithic rocks, whereas many of the faults of other trends cut Tertiary volcanic rocks and a few cut Pleistocene glacial deposits.
A surface of moderate relief was cut before eruption of the Oligocene(?) volcanic rocks, and the late Miocene(?)-early Pliocene(?) volcanic rocks covered a deeply weathered surface of low relief. By the Pleistocene a landscape essentially like that of today had been formed, and during the one period of Pleistocene glaciation, valley glaciers and a mountain ice sheet modified the earlier landforms and left extensive deposits of till and outwash. These deposits have been modified in many places by mass-wasting processes that have dominated post-glacial erosion.
Mineral deposits in the quadrangle include deposits of disseminated auriferous pyrite, base- and precious-metal bearing quartz veins that occupy the east-trending fault zones, placer deposits of gold and tin, and a few non-metallic deposits, chiefly stone, gravel, and dumortierite. Nearly all of the metallic minerals mined in the quadrangle have come from the east-trending quartz veins and from the placer deposits.

The former discovered that electrical currents and potentials were developed by certain ore deposits in Cornwall, England. Fox made measurements of these potentials and determined the resistivities of the minerals and surrounding rocks also. The latter, invented the non-polarizing electrode with which he overcame the polarizing effects of direct current, and was able to trace and extend the Comstock lode. According to Slichter (1934, p.234), F. Neumann proposed as early as 1884 determining the resistivity of the earth by a four-electrode method nearly like our present technique, and carefully developed the mathematical theory of the method. Wells (1914) followed the work of Barus with studies of the electric activity in ore deposits. Ambronn (1926) gives an extensive bibliography of the early work in geophysics.
The classical work of Wenner (1917) and, almost at the same time and independently, that of Schlumberger (1920) laid the foundations for resistivity measurements on the surface of the earth. While Schlumberger was actually making measurements of earth resistivity related to structural studies as early as 1912 in France, work in this country was slow in developing from the work of Wenner, but it was gaining adherents following the pioneering work of Kelley (1922) and Gish (1923). Probably the work of Gish and Rooney (1925) Who redesigned the apparatus of McCollum (1925) was the largest contributing cause in this country for the sudden interest and expansion of electrical methods. Their work was followed by many others in the late 1920's, some of which are: Gish (1926); Rooney and Gish (1927); Rooney (1927); Gish and Rooney (1927); Lee (1928); Hotchkiss, Rooney, and Fisher (1929); Weaver (1929); Lundberg (1929); Leonardon and. Kelley (1929); Crosby and Leonardon (1929); Carretta and Kelly (1929); Koenigsberger (1929}; Runkel (1928, 1929); Heiland (1929); and many others.

Eichholz has developed a method which is claimed to be independent of the degree of equilibrium, but it has been found to be inadequate when used with some types of disequilibriated ores.
\nAn absorption method has been developed for the determination of uranium which is independent of the secular equilibrium of the series. With some refinement this method may used to determine the state of equilibrium of an ore.

The stream-sediment programs of the division are designed to carry out this broad responsibility and include systematic measurement of the sediment load carried by streams, studies of course and movement of fluvial sediment, and research on the mechanics of fluvial-sediment movement. In order to effectively consummate these programs over the Nation, finds are appropriated by Congress and earmarked in part from what is termed the federal program and in part for the cooperative program to match on a 50-50 basis, offerings at the State or local level. The federal stream-sediment program is comprised of investigations in which the federal steam-sediment program is comprised of investigations in which the federal or national interest is predominant and, accordingly, the costs are borne entirely by the federal government. The water of the springs rises by artesian pressure from lava-rock aquifers through about 150 feet of overlying thinly bedded lake deposits to discharge at the bottom of an impounding reservoir, the spring orifices being beneath 30 to 36 feet of water. On the valley floor less than a mile south and southwest of the reservoir artesian wells appear to tap the same lava rock from which the waters of the springs arise.
\nObservations of the piesometric surface of the artesian water during flow tests show that three artesian wells, 30/16-1R1, 30/17-7D1, and -7F1, are hydraulically connected with a fourth, 30/16-1R2, and that well 30/16-1R2 is hydraulically connected with Ana Springs. A fifth artesian well, 30/16-12A1, did not show hydraulic connection with the other four wells during the short-term tests made.
\nMathematical constant derived from the tests permit calculations which indicate that the four wells, 30/16-1R1, -1R2, 30/17-7D1, and -7F1, when flowing at a combined rate of 4,600 gpm for 100 days, may lower the pressure head on Ana Springs by an amount equal to 2.7 feet of water, This lowering in pressure may cause a decrease in the rate of discharge of Ana Springs by about 4.4 cubic feet per second, or about 5 percent of the present wintertime rate of discharge. This diversion (5 percent) would be within the limit of error of single measurement of the the spring discharge. Chemical and temperature characteristics of thew Ana Spring water indicate it is similar to the water of the five lava-rock wells.

\nFrequently the Theis nonequilibrium formula is use din the quantitative analyses that are part of many-ground-water investigations. The computations associated therewith may become quite involved and tedious, especially when dealing with predictions of the decline of water levels throughout large areas in which there are many discharging wells. The process of predicting future water-level declines can be greatly simplified and shortened by preparing a special draw-down scale for given conditions. Through use of such a scale much of the computation can be reduced to scaling the values sought from a map, on which the pumped wells have been spotted. The net drawdown effect, which is the sum of the water-level declines caused by the many individual pumped wells, can be determined readily for any desired point in the area. If the net drawdown effect is desired, a summation of the effects of all the pumped wells can be repeated for each point. By determining the water-level change at a number of points, for a given period of time, a contour map of predicted water-level changes for the multiple-well system can be drawn.
