A decrease in unit cell size was generally observed. Calculations on the basis of Vegard's Law showed that the ordering of the interstitial oxygen ions could account for the decrease in cell size on annealing. The interstitial oxygens are not necessarily completely disordered before annealing. The degree of original disorder is dependent on the Rare Earth/ThO<sub>2</sub> ratio; for high ThO<sub>2</sub> and low rare earths, the interstitial oxygens are completely random. The degree of disorder apparently depends solely on the composition, and not on the past history of the sample; this implies that the oxygens are being continuously disordered, perhaps by alpha particles, to the equilibrium point determined by the R.E./ThO<sub>2</sub> ratio. The degree of ordering of the interstitial oxygens also accounts for the difference in cell size between vein pitchblendes and those from the sediments of the Colorado Plateau.</p>\n<br>\n<p>A study was also made of the degree of oxidation of uraninites. Although the uranium in many pegmatitic uraninites is more oxidized than can be obtained with the cubic UO<sub>2</sub> phase in the laboratory, if the atoms proxying for uranium are calculated into the structural formula, and the lead is assumed to be radiogenic and calculated as original uranium, almost all pegmatitic uraninites fall into the range of interstitial oxygen content obtainable in the laboratory. This fact supports the auto-oxidation hypothesis.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Many of the vein and sedimentary pitchblendes have compositions close to U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub>, although they are cubic. They may gave crystallized as U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub>, the decomposed to the cubic phase and a amorphous phase. This suggests that the stability range of U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> includes only very exceptional natural conditions.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Vegard's Law calculations, studies of zoning in crystals, differential leaching, polished section textures, and other lines of evidence indicate that lead, including radiogenic lead, is exsolved from uraninite. A study of x-ray line intensities indicates that it exsolves as oriented monomolecular layers of orthohombic PbO (massicot) along cube planes in the uraninite, separating the uraninite crystallites so that the x-ray reflections interfere destructively to different degrees for different reflections.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr5711","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Berman, R.M., 1957, The role of lead and excess oxygen in uranite: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 57-11, 100 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5711.","productDescription":"100 p.","numberOfPages":"146","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287354,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287353,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1957/0011/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640e42","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berman, Robert Morris","contributorId":36145,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berman","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Morris","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166531,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These water requirements, as indicated by a survey of the water used by the plants operating in 1953, are both quantitative and qualitative. </p><p>About 300 mgd (million gallons per day) of water was used in 1953 in the preparation of purified wood cellulose and cotton linters, the basic material from which the rayon and acetate fiber is made. An additional 620 mgd was used in the process of converting the cellulose to rayon and acetate fiber. The total, 920 mgd, is about 1 percent of the total estimated withdrawals of industrial water in the United States in 1953. </p><p>The rayon- and acetate-fiber plants are scattered through eastern United States and generally are located in small towns or rural areas where there are abundant supplies of clean, soft water. Water use at a typical rayon-fiber plant was about 9 mgd, and at a typical acetate-fiber plant about 38 mgd. </p><p>About 110 gallons of water was used to produce a pound of rayon fiber 32 gallons per pound was process water and the remainder was used largely for cooling in connection with power production and air conditioning. For the manufacture of a pound of acetate fiber about 170 gallons of water was used. However, the field survey on which this report is based indicated a wide range in the amount of water used per pound of product. For example, in the manufacture of viscose rayon, the maximum unit water use was 8 times the minimum unit water use. Water use in summer was about 22 percent greater than average annual use. About 8 mgd of water was consumed by evaporation in the manufacture of rayon and acetate fiber. </p><p>More than 90 percent of the water used by the rayon and acetate industry was withdrawn from surface-water sources, about 8 percent from ground water, and less than 2 percent from municipal water supplies. </p><p>All available analyses of the untreated waters used by the rayon and acetate industry were collected and studied. The untreated waters were generally cool, low in content of calcium and magnesium, and very low in iron and manganese. At many plants, water was obtained from more than one source, and thus had different quality characteristics. Dissolved solids in all the untreated waters analyzed ranged between 14 and 747 ppm (parts per million) but in those waters used in processing the dissolved solids content was less than 200 ppm. </p><p>The cooling water used by the industry is also generally of very high quality, principally because the requirements for a high-quality process water necessitate location of the plants in areas where such water is available.</p>","largerWorkTitle":"Water requirements of selected industries","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1330D","usgsCitation":"Mussey, O.D., 1957, Water requirements of the rayon- and acetate-fiber industry: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1330, vi, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1330D.","productDescription":"vi, 39 p.","startPage":"141","endPage":"179","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":28307,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1330d/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"867.98 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":137742,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1330d/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47c8e4b07f02db4ab9b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mussey, Orville Durey","contributorId":45688,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mussey","given":"Orville","email":"","middleInitial":"Durey","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145088,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In this region it is the only source of large supplies of water that are both cool and of good quality the year round. The reservoir is heavily drawn upon, yet has very large potentialities for future development because of the favorable conditions for both natural and artificially induced infiltration of water from the river into the alluvial deposits. \r\n\r\nThe principal features of the Ohio Valley were formed during the Pleistocene, or glacial, epoch. The drainage area upriver from Cincinnati was added when ice first advanced south, blocked rivers draining northwestward off the Appalachians, and diverted their waters southwest into the headwaters of the early Ohio River. A deep channel, the bottom of which is at a lower altitude than the present river bed, was excavated before the third (Illinoian) glacial stage. The thick body of sand and gravel that now lies in the deep channel was deposited by floods of melt water as the ice sheet of the Wisconsin stage melted away from the Ohio basin. \r\n\r\nThe vertical distance between river pool level and the base of the old channel increases from 25 feet at Ashland, Ky., to 110 feet at the mouth of the river, for the old channel has a steeper gradient than the present river. The width of the bedrock valley ranges from half a mile at one point near Cincinnati to almost 10 miles near Uniontown, Ky. Where the valley is narrow, the flat-floored deep channel extends from one side of the valley to. the other. Where the valley is wide, the deep channel occupies only part of the width of the valley, the rest being underlain by rock benches mantled with alluvium. The alluvium consists of a sheet of sand and gravel overlain by a thinner layer of silt and clay. The sheet of sand and gravel is continuous across and up and down the valley, and at most places along the valley it is exposed in part of the river channel. The gravel is coarse and cobbly near Cincinnati but finer downstream, and near Paducah most of it is no larger than pea size. The thickness of water-saturated sand and gravel increases downvalley in the same way as does the distance between river level and the base of the old channel, roughly from 2b to 110 feet. The study was made to determine the net rates of erosion in the upland areas and the effects of the reservoirs on the amount of sediment transported to the parent stream.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The climate of the area ranges from cold and humid on the high mountains to warm and semiarid on the plains. The average annual precipitation ranges from less than 15 inches on the plains to more than 27 inches in the high mountains, which have a maximum altitude of 13,165 feet. The rocks in the Powder River drainage basin range in age from Precambrian to Recent.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The 25 stock reservoirs that were used in the study have drainage areas of 0.09 to 3.53 square miles, are from 3 to 51 years old, and impound water from areas that have land slopes averaging from about 3 to 41 percent. The ratio of average reservoir capacity to drainage area ranges from about 2 to nearly 200 acre-feet per square mile.</p>\n<br>\n<p>After adjustment for trap efficiency the average annual sediment yield to the 25 reservoirs ranged from 0.04 to 1.49 acre-feet per square mile and averaged 0.50 acre-foot per square mile of drainage area. The average sediment yield from 6 drainage areas mostly underlain by shale was 0.80 acre-foot per year, 2.3 times greater than yields from the areas underlain by sandstone or sandy shales.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Correlations show that the sediment yield increased approximately as the 1.5 power of the channel density, the 0.4 power oif the shape factor, the 0.7 power of the average land slope, and the -0.25 power of the age of the reservoir.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Empirical equations for sediment yield and trap efficiency for the area studied are given.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr5722","collaboration":"Prepared as part of a program of the Department of the Interior for development of the Missouri River basin","usgsCitation":"Roach, C., and Colby, B.R., 1957, Erosion and deposition as indicated by sediment accumulation in stock reservoirs in the Powder River drainage basin, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 57-22, ii, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5722.","productDescription":"ii, 55 p.","numberOfPages":"57","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287366,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287365,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1957/0022/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","city":"Arvada","otherGeospatial":"Powder River Drainage Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.0,43.0 ], [ -108.0,45.0 ], [ -105.0,45.0 ], [ -105.0,43.0 ], [ -108.0,43.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe079","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roach, Carl H.","contributorId":105229,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roach","given":"Carl H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":254200,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Colby, Bruce R.","contributorId":59775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":254199,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
