The district is east of the Colorado Front Range mineral belt, along the east front of the range. From November 1953 through October 1956, about 10,000 tons of uranium ore, much of which was high-grade pitchblende-bearing vein material, was shipped from the district. The ore occurs in deposits that range in size from bodies containing less than 50 tons to ore shoots containing over 1,000 tons. The only other mining activity in the area has been a sporadic production of beryl, feldspar, and scrap mica from Precambrian pegmatites, and quarrying of dimension stone, limestone, and clay from sedimentary rocks. Most of the Ralston Buttes district consists of complexly folded Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks - gneiss, schist, quartzite, amphibolite, and granodiorite. Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks crop out in the northeastern part of the district. These rocks are cut by northwesterly-trending fault systems of Laramide age and by small bodies of intrusive rocks that are Tertiary in age. The typical uranium deposits in the district are hydrothermal veins occupying openings in Laramide fault breccias or related fractures that cut the Precambrian rocks. Pitchblende and lesser amounts of secondary uranium minerals are associated with sparse base-mental sulfides in a gangue of carbonate minerals, potash feldspar, and, more rarely, quartz. Less common types of deposits consist of pitchblende and secondary uranium minerals that occupy fractures cutting pegmatites and quartz veins. The uranium deposits are concentrated in two areas, the Ralston Creek area and the Golden Gate Canyon area. The deposits in the Ralston Creek area are located along the Rogers fault system, and the deposits in the Golden Gate Canyon area are along the Hurricane Hill fault system. Two geologic factors were important to the localization of the uranium deposits: (1) favorable structural environment and (2) favorable host rocks. The deposits in each of the two major areas are located where a northwesterly-trending Laramide fault system splits into a complex network of faults. Also, most of the deposits appear to be localized where the faults cut Precambrian rocks rich in hornblende, biotite, or garnet and biotite. The ore controls recognized in this relatively new uranium district may have wider application in areas of similar geology elsewhere in the Front Range.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem901","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Sheridan, D.M., Maxwell, C.H., Albee, A., and Van Horn, R., 1956, Geology of the Ralston Buttes district, Jefferson County, Colorado: a preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 901, Report: 25 p.;  Plate 1: 23.92 inches x 32.40 inches; Plate 2: 12.85 inches x 24.65 inches; Plate 3: 13.33 inches x 18.47 inches; Plate 4: 13.22 inches x 24.70 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem901.","productDescription":"Report: 25 p.;  Plate 1: 23.92 inches x 32.40 inches; Plate 2: 12.85 inches x 24.65 inches; Plate 3: 13.33 inches x 18.47 inches; Plate 4: 13.22 inches x 24.70 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277477,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":8973,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0901/report.pdf"},{"id":283731,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0901/plate-expl1.pdf"},{"id":283732,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0901/plate-expl2.pdf"},{"id":283733,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0901/plate-expl3.pdf"},{"id":283730,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0901/plate-2.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Jefferson County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105.3991,39.1295 ], [ -105.3991,39.9144 ], [ -105.0487,39.9144 ], [ -105.0487,39.1295 ], [ -105.3991,39.1295 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523190e3e4b079b6e76e60d9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sheridan, Douglas M.","contributorId":13966,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sheridan","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Maxwell, Charles H.","contributorId":100349,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maxwell","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288175,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Albee, Arden L.","contributorId":68211,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albee","given":"Arden L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Van Horn, Richard","contributorId":52169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Horn","given":"Richard","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288173,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

S. Geological Survey assembled data on the occurrence, distribution, quantity, and chemical quality of saline waters as of 1955 for a report entitled, \"Preliminary survey of the saline water resources of the United States\" to be released when completed as a U. S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1374. This report comprises data for New York State. Saline water is defined herein as any mixture of fresh and salt water having more than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved solids. In the Nation as a whole there are, of course, all gradations of salinity from 1,000 ppm up to the 30,000 to 35,000 ppm characteristic of sea water, and the even higher salinities of certain natural brines. Sea water, and other water of comparable salinity, will be referred to here as \"sea water\" or \"high-chloride water\". This report contains two parts: one for Long Island, Staten Island, and Manhattan, N. Y., and the other for Upstate New York. Figure 1 shows the locations of the places named and important occurrences of saline water in and near Long Island. Tables 1 and 2 list, respectively, well data and chemical analyses for selected wells in Long Island, Staten Island, and Manhattan, N. Y.; tables 3 and 4 list, respectively, well data and chemical analyses for selected wells in Upstate New York. For many samples, only the chloride concentration and not the total dissolved solids has been determined. However, it is safe to assume that the total dissolved solids in natural water are substantially in excess of 1,000 ppm where the chloride is at or nearly at this concentration.","language":"English","publisher":"New York State Water Power and Control Commission","publisherLocation":"Albany, NY","collaboration":"Prepared by the U. The results of such treatment over a period of about three years were presented in Geographical Names of Antarctica, Special Publication No. 86 of the Board on Geographical Names, in May 1947, two supplements to which were issued in 1949 and 1951. The continuing program since that publication has now covered most of the geographic naming in Antarctica. Nearly 24 townships were mapped in the central part of the Great Divide Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Fourteen of these townships contain outcrops of uranium-bearing coal. Thirty coal beds were mapped, but only seven of them have uranium-bearing coal reserves as defined in this report. Coal beds 2.5 or more feet thick are considered in calculating coal reserves, and of these, only beds containing 0.003 or more percent uranium are considered in calculating reserves of uranium in coal. Reserves of uranium in coal ash include those beds 2.5 or more feet thick that contain 0.015 or more percent uranium in coal ash.</span></p>\n<p><span> Measured and indicated coal reserves total about 700,000,000 short tons which contain about 2,600 short tons of uranium in the coal, or about 2,400 short tons of uranium in the coal ash. Strippable reserves, defined as reserves in beds beneath 60 or less feet of overburden, are about 250,000,000 short tons of coal containing about 1,100 short tons of uranium in coal, or about 600 tons of uranium in coal ash.</span></p>\n<p><span> The thickest coal beds underlie a relatively narrow belt that trends northwest and coincides approximately with the axis of the Red Desert syncline. The coal beds contain the most uranium on the east flank of the syncline near the southwesternmost edge of the Battle Spring formation (new). This formation is of early and middle Eocene age and consists predominantly of very coarse-grained arkosic sandstone which is highly permeable. It intertongues southwestward with the Tess permeable Green River and Wasatch formations. The Green River formation consists from youngest to oldest of the Morrow Creek and Laney shale members and the Tipton and Luman (new) tongues. The Wasatch formation interfingers with the Green River formation and consists from youngest to oldest of the Cathedral Bluffs, Niland, and Red Desert tongues. The latter two are here recognized for the first time and contain all the coal beds in the Wasatch formation. The Morrow Creek member of the Green River formation is of middle Eocene age. The Laney member and Cathedral Bluffs tongue of the Green River and Wasatch formation, respectively intertongue and are in part equivalent, and are of early or middle Eocene age.&nbsp; The other units are of early Eocene age.</span></p>\n<p><span> A broad gentle arch which is either the eastern extension of the Wamsutter arch, or a separate arch en echelon to it, separates the Washakie Basin the southeastern part of the map area from the Red Desert syncline in the northeastern part. The Red Desert syncline plunges gently northwest into the nearly circular structural Niland basin. The south flank of the Wamsutter(?) arch dips southeastward at an average rate of about 230 feet per mile. The northern flank of the arch dips northeastward at an average rate of about 140 feet per mile.</span></p>\n<p><span> North of the Niland basin, the structure is more complex and is dominated by a northwestwardtrending graben which parallels and includes the Cyclone Rim in the northern part of die map area.&nbsp; Schroeckingerite deposits in the northeastern part of the map area lie within this graben in a sequence of arkosic sandstone and clay shale stratigraphically equivalent to the lower part of the Cathedral Bluffs tongue of the Wasatch formation and to the uppermost part of the Tipton tongue of the Green River formation. Weakly radioactive tuffaceous sandstone beds of the Browns Park formation that probably once blanketed the entire Great Divide Basin are preserved a short distance north and northwest of the schroeckingerite deposits. The geologic settings of the schroeckingerite and uranium-bearing coal are similar and their source of uranium is probably the same. The uranium probably was leached from tuffaceous beds in the Browns Park formation and carried to its present site of deposition by groundwater whose circulation was guided by structure and changes in facies.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/tei477","collaboration":"Work done on behalf of the Division of Raw In experiments designed to furnish information on the effects upon quail and pheasants of prolonged feeding upon diets containing small percentages of these compounds, it was shown that aldrin, dieldrin and endrin are cumulative, and that quail are unable to survive after ingesting 5-10 mg./kg, of aldrin, 30-50 mg./kg, of dieldrin, or 6-15 mg./kg, of endrin. Maximum levels (p.p.m.) in the diets permitting survival for extended periods were: DDT, 200; strobane, above 500; aldrin, 0.5; dieldrin, 1.0; endrin, 1.0. Inclusion of these compounds in the diets of breeding quail and pheasants affected hatchability of eggs and viability of chicks, even though the adult birds appeared unaffected.'
