The first-formed crystals are euhedral laths which form a mesh making up most of the slag. As the slag continues to solidify, its composition changes slightly and more equant, subhedral crystals of pseudowollastonite are deposited within the framework of the earlier material. Finally, anherdral masses of fibrous, poorly crystallized material are deposited in the remaining pore spaces which are not always completely filled. Spherules of iron phosphide, Fe<sub>2</sub>P, occur very sparsely in the slag as inclusions from the immiscible iron phosphide melt. Uranium content increases in the later crystal products of the slag, and by heavy-liquid fractionation it has been possible to segregate partially the phases and to obtain a fourfold concentration of uranium in 5 percent of the material and a twofold concentration in 30 percent of the material. Nuclear-emulsion studies indicate that the last phases of the silicate slag are actually eight times as radioactive as the early phases. In addition, the iron phosphide spherules are comparably enriches in uranium.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei615","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Young, E., and Altschuler, Z.S., 1956, Uranium distribution in pseudowollastonite slag from a phosphorus furnace: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 615, 17 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei615.","productDescription":"17 p.","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":290047,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":290046,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0615/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6054e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Young, Edward","contributorId":72308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Altschuler, Zalman S.","contributorId":71261,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Altschuler","given":"Zalman","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In the King Mountain area in southwestern Upton County carnotite forms coatings along joint planes and in borings in marine Cretaceous limestone. In the Hueco Mountains area in El Paso and Hudspeth Counties carnotite and similar secondary uranium minerals form coatings in caliche and collavium of Pleistocene(?) or Recent age, and along joints and bedding planes in Permian limestone. No uranium ore has been produced, however, from either area.
\n
\n
In the King Mountain area, coatings of carnotite and tyuyamunite have observed from about 2 feet to a maximum of 7 1/2 feet below the surface of the ground in the Edwards limestone of Early Cretaceous age. One channel sample of the limestone in this area contained 0.002 percent U and 0.004 percent eU, and a small, selected sample of the mineral coatings contained 8.52 percent U and an estimated 3.7 percent eU. In the Hueco Mountains area, coatings of carnotite and tyuyamunite have been found on boulders in colluvial deposits, on fractures in a caliche matrix of the colluvium, and on joints and bedding planes in the underlying Hueco limestone and Permian age. In the colluvium, the coatings have been found to depths of 20 feet below the surface, and in the Hueco limestone they extend to depths of 12 to 15 feet below the surface, maximum depths penetrated by the prospect pits. Selected samples from the colluvial deposits contained as much as 0.01 percent eU and 0.023 percent U. Uranium minerals are reported in other widely scattered prospect pits along the west side of the Hueco Mountains.
\n
\n
In both areas the minerals seem to have been deposited by ground water and are found in a zone generally less than 20 feet below the surface of the ground. Analyses show that in both areas the uranium is out of equilibrium with its decomposition products; the fact that normally uranium is greater than equivalent uranium suggests that the mineralization is relatively recent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei574","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Eargle, D.H., 1956, Some uranium occurrences in west Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 574, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei574.","productDescription":"32 p.","numberOfPages":"33","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288865,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288864,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0574/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -106.65,25.84 ], [ -106.65,36.5 ], [ -93.51,36.5 ], [ -93.51,25.84 ], [ -106.65,25.84 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7820","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eargle, D. The Morrison formation and Entrada sandstone of Jurassic age and the Wind River formation of Eocene age seem to be seleniferous stratigraphic zones; sulfides deposited within these formations generally contain abnormal amounts of selenium. The selenium content of the pyrite, marcasite, and chalcocite is much greater than that reported in previously published data.
\n
\n
Under the prevailing temperatures and pressures of formation of the Colorado Plateau uranium deposits the maximum amount of Se substituting for S in the pyrite structure was found to be 3 percent by weight. Ferroselite, the iron selenide (FeSe2), was found in two deposits on the Colorado Plateau and it was also established that galena (PbS) forms an isomorphous series with clausthalite (PbSe) in nature.
\n
\n
During oxidation of the selenium-bearing sulfides and selenides in the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming, the selenium forms pinkish crusts of either monoclinic or hexagonal native selenium intergrown with soluble sulfates, suggesting that under \"normal\" oxidizing conditions native selenium is more stable than selenites or selenates.
\n
\n
The above-normal selenium content of these sulfides from sedimentary rocks of Mesozoic and Tertiary age is significant. The high selenium in these sulfides is related to periods of volcanic and intrusive activity penecontemporaneous with the formation of the containing sediments.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei632","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Coleman, R.G., and Delevaux, M., 1956, Occurrence of selenium in sulfides from some sedimentary rocks of the western United States: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 632, 54 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei632.","productDescription":"54 p.","numberOfPages":"55","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":290069,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":290068,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0632/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona;Colorado;New Mexico;Utah;Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -114.05,34.61 ], [ -114.05,45.0 ], [ -103.97,45.0 ], [ -103.97,34.61 ], [ -114.05,34.61 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af4e4b07f02db69216a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coleman, Robert G.","contributorId":88022,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coleman","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Delevaux, Maryse","contributorId":104577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Delevaux","given":"Maryse","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284542,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Certain elements have been added locally to the sandstone host to form the deposits; the added fraction of each element in the deposits is call extrinsic to distinguish it from the part present in the original unmineralized host. The principal extrinsic components, in their approximate order of abundance, are vanadium, iron magnesium, uranium, sulfur, arsenic, copper, lead, molbedenum, selenium, cobalt, and nickel.
\n
\n
At lest six possible sources of the extrinsic components of the uranium deposits may be considered reasonably likely: 1) the sandstone beds enclosing the uranium deposits, 2) the marine Mancos shales of Cretaceous ages, 3) bentonitic shales of Jurassic and Triassic age, 4) petroliferous rocks of Pennsylvanian age, 5) Precambrian crystalline rocks underlying the Colorado Plateau, and 6) magmatic reservoirs of latest Cretaceous or Tertiary age. If the major source of some of the elements of external to the sandstone beds enclosing the deposits, it is likely that several sources have contributed to some if not most of the extrinsic components and that the importance of the various sources differs from one component to the next. It is composed of a crystalline rock, classified as phonolite porphyry, that when fresh is gray but which weathers to green or brown. Vertical joints divide the rock mass into polygonal columns that extend from just above the base to the top of the Tower.\r\n\r\nThe hills in the vicinity and at the base of the Tower are composed of red, yellow, green, or gray sedimentary rocks that consist of sandstone, shale, or gypsum. These rocks, in aggregate about 400 feet thick, include, from oldest to youngest, the upper part of the Spearfish formation, of Triassic age, the Gypsum Spring formation, of Middle Jurassic age, and the Sundance formation, of Late Jurassic age. The Sundance formation consists of the Stockade Beaver shale member, the Hulett sandstone member, the Lak member, and the Redwater shale member.\r\n\r\nThe formations have been only slightly deformed by faulting and folding. Within 2,000 to 3.000 feet of the Tower, the strata for the most part dip at 3 deg - 5 deg towards the Tower. Beyond this distance, they dip at 2 deg - 5 deg from the Tower.\r\n\r\nThe Tower is believed to have been formed by the intrusion of magma into the sedimentary rocks, and the shape of the igneous mass formed by the cooled magma is believed to have been essentially the same as the Tower today. Devils Tower owes its impressiveness to its resistance to erosion as compared with the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and to the contrast of the somber color of the igneous column to the brightly colored bands of sedimentary rocks.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/b1021I","usgsCitation":"Robinson, C., 1956, Geology of Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1021, p. 289-302, ill., map, plates (in pocket) ;23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1021I.","productDescription":"p. 289-302, ill., map, plates (in pocket) ;23 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":93420,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1021i/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":167646,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1021i/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":12457,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/deto/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":260395,"rank":900,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1021i/plate-30.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db683fc2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robinson, Charles Sherwood 0000-0002-7623-2380","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7623-2380","contributorId":71163,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinson","given":"Charles Sherwood","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":214959,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
