Periods of record for the same station published by other agencies are listed only when they contain more detailed information or are for periods not reported in publications of the Geological Survey.
The stations are listed in the downstream order first adopted for use in the 1951 series of water-supply papers on surface water supply of the United States. Starting at the headwater of each stream all stations are listed in a downstream direction. Tributary streams are indicated by indention and are inserted between main-stem stations in the order in which they enter the main stream. To indicate the rank of any tributary on which a record is available and the stream to which it is immediately tributary, each indention in the listing of stations represents one rank. A stream name only is inserted where necessary for the purpose of showing the proper rank or order of tributaries.
Station names are given in their most recently published forms. Parentheses around part of a station name indicate that the enclosed word or words were used in an earlier published name of the station or in a name under which records were published by some agency other than the Geological Survey.
The drainage areas, in square miles, are the latest figures published or otherwise available at this time. Drainage areas that were obviously inconsistent with other drainage areas on the same stream have been omitted.
Under \"period of record\" breaks of less than a 12-month period are not shown. A dash not followed immediately by a closing date shows that the station was continued in operation beyond September 30, 1955. The years given are calendar years. All periods of record not contained in water-supply papers on surface water supply of the United States are indicated by appropriate footnotes.
Records both of gage height and of discharge are listed for streamflow stations, and records of gage height and of contents (or of change in contents) are listed for stations on reservoirs. Records of gage heights only and records consisting only of monthly figures either of streamflow or reservoir contents are designated by symbols and footnotes. For early years when daily discharges were not generally published by the Geological Survey, published daily gage heights and a published rating table were considered to be equivalent to daily discharges.

The difference in the quartz:quartzite:chert ratios of the pebbles, the presence of limestone and siltstone pebbles, and to a lesser degree,the difference in color of pebbles serve to distinguish the Moss Back from the Shinarump. In areas where both the Moss Back and Shinarump are present, the average ratios of quartz, quartzite, a.nd chert are respectively about 12:37:51 and 82:16:2. Limestone and siltstone pebbles are commonly found in the Moss Back, whereas they are rarely found in the Shinarump. The colors of the Moss \r\nBack pebbles are generally darker than those of the Shinarump pebbles. \r\nThe Moss Back contains more gray to black pebbles and fewer light-colored pebbles, such as red, orange, and white, than the Shinarump. S. Geological Survey, at the request of the Director of Naval Petroleum Reserves, undertook a geologic investigation of San Nicolas Island, Ventura County California, in the spring of 1955. This preliminary report summarizes present knowledge concerning the general stratigraphy and structure of the island. Additional surface and underwater geologic studies are needed to further differentiate lithologic units within the complexly faulted Eocene sequence and to obtain additional data concerning the northwestward extension of the general anticlinal structure of the island.
