The triangular area bounded by the most productive mining districts of central Colorado- Leadville, Climax-Kokomo, and Gilman-Red Cliff- is of economic interest not only because of its close spatial relation to these districts but because it is closely related geologically. It contains the same rocks as the adjoining mining districts and is closely related to them structurally. It shows widespread evidence of weak mineralization at the surface and may contain ore deposits at depth, as the zones that have been productive in the adjoining mining districts lie beneath a cover of younger rocks in much of the area.

The Vazante area can be reached by roads leading north from the State of Sao Paulo, via Araxa; west from Balo Horizonte, Minas Gerais; and south from Paracatu, Minas Gerais.\r\n\r\nThe deposit is in branching, sub-parallel fault breccia zones. Calamine (H2Zn2SiO5), and willomite (ZnSiO4), along with small quantities of smithsonite (ZnCO3), form the matrix of the fault breccia. The zinc mineralization is cut by narrow veins of chalcocite in platy crystal aggregate thought to be pseudomorphous after covellite. The chalcocite veins contain small quantities of sphalterite, galena, covellite and calamine.\r\n\r\nFaults that contain breccia zones displace shale and dolomite. The sedimentary rocks are thought to be Silurian in age. The fault breccia zones have a regional trend of N 40 degrees E and crop out over a strike length of more than four kilometers. The mineralization of the fault zones was observed to continue to the north for an additional four kilometers. The mineralized fault breccia zones range from a few meters to 60 meters in width. This check list describing the distribution, abundance, flowering period, plant growth on various rook types, and other habitat relationships, is based primarily on extensive collections of arctic plants by the author and other members of the Survey.
In 1948 and 1949 the Arctic Institute of North America sponsored these studies, which were done primarily out of Survey field camps. Analysis of these collections which are probably the most extensive and complete of any from northern Alaska, was done at the University of Minnesota.
