Storage facilities have enabled the country to utilize to a much fuller extent one of the most valuable natural resources: water. During recent years the construction of reservoirs has continued at a high rate. This report shows the status of these facilities on January 1, 1954, and describes briefly some of the reasons for growth of reservoir facilities in the United States.

Descriptive data are given for reservoirs having a capacity of 5, 000 acre-feet or more and for natural lakes having a usable capacity of 5,000 acre-feet or more. Included are reservoirs and lakes completed as of January 1, 1954, and reservoirs under construction on that date. The total number of such reservoirs and lakes is 1, 300.

A descriptive list of reservoirs in the United States was first published by the United States Geological Survey in March 1948. That report, Geological Survey Circular 23, entitled Reservoirs in the United States, included reservoirs completed as of January 1, 1947. Since January 1, 1947, reservoirs representing a total usable capacity of 115,000,000 acre-feet, or an increase of 71 percent, have been constructed or are under construction. Data about these new reservoirs are presented herein, and the data shown for reservoirs constructed before 1947 have been corrected on the basis of the latest available survey to determine reservoir capacity.

The total usable capacity of reservoirs and lakes included in this compilation amounts to 278, 120, 000 acre-feet, and the corresponding surface area totals 11, 046, 000 acres.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to the hydrology of the United States, 1955 (Water Supply Paper 1360)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":1,"text":"Federal Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1360A","usgsCitation":"Thomas, N., and Harbeck, G.E., 1956, Reservoirs in the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1360, Report: v, 99 p.; 9 Plates (in 10 Sheets): 50.19 x 33.95 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1360A.","productDescription":"Report: v, 99 p.; 9 Plates (in 10 Sheets): 50.19 x 33.95 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"106","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":29364,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1360a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138823,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1360a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":276482,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1360a/plate-01.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map of United States showing drainage areas and index numbers"}],"country":"United States","publicComments":"Subtitle: Revising and superseding Geological Survey Circular 23, Reservoirs in the United States, by G. The nature of these investigations ranged from field examinations of individual prospects or the laboratory analysis of significantly radioactive samples submitted by prospectors to reconnaissance studies of large districts. In this period no deposits of uranium or thorium that would warrant commercial exploitation were discovered. The investigations, however, disclosed that radioactive materials occur in widely scattered areas of Alaska and in widely diverse environments.
\n
\n
Many igneous rocks throughout Alaska are weakly radioactive because of uranium- and thorium-bearing accessory minerals, such as allanite, apatite, monazite, sphene, xenotime, and zircon; more rarely the radioactivity of these rocks is due to thorianite or thorite and their uranoan varieties. The felsic rocks, for example, granites and syenites, are generally more radioactive than the mafic igneous rocks. Pegmatites, locally, have also proved to be radioactive, but they have little commercial significance. No primary uranium oxide minerals have been found yet in Alaskan vein deposits, except, perhaps, for a mineral tentatively identified as pitchblende in the Hyder district of southeastern Alaska. However, certain occurrences of secondary uranium minerals, chiefly those of the uranite group, on the Seward Peninsula, in the Russian Mountains, and in the vicinity of Kodiak suggest that pitchblende-type ores may occur at depth beneath zones of alteration. Thorite-bearing veins have been discovered on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska.
\n
\n
Although no deposits or carnotite-type minerals have been found in Alaska, several samples containing such minerals have been submitted by Alaskan prospectors. Efforts to locate the deposits from which these minerals were obtained have been unsuccessful, but review of available geologic data suggests that several Alaskan areas are potentially favorable for carnotite-type deposits. The chief of these areas is the Alaska Peninsula-Cook Inlet area which encompasses most of the reported occurrences of the prospectors' carnotite-type samples.
\n
\n
Alaska is also potentially favorable for the occurrence of large bodies of the very low-grade uraniferous sedimentary rocks, such as phosphorites and black shales. This type of deposit, however, has not received much study because of the emphasis on the search for bonanza-type high-grade ores. Uraniferous phosphorites similar to those of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming occur in northern Alaska on the north flank of the Brooks Range; black shales comparable to the uraniferous shales of the Chattanooga formation of southeastern United States have been noted along the Yukon River near the international boundary.
\n
\n
Placer deposits in Alaska have some small potential for the production of the radioactive elements as byproducts of gold- and tin-placer mining. the placer area believed to have the relatively greatest potential in Alaska lies in the Kahiltna River valley where concentrates are known to contain such commercial minerals as ilmenite, cassiterite, platinum, and gold in addition to uranothorianite and monazite.
\n
\n
The possibilities of the natural fluids--water and petroleum--have not yet been tested in Alaska to any great extent. Studies of fluids are in progress to determine whether they may be used to discover and define areas potentially favorable for the occurrence of uraniferous lodes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei577","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., 1956, Summary of reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in Alaska, 1945-1954, and an appraisal of Alaskan uranium possibilities: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 577, Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei577.","productDescription":"Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches","numberOfPages":"112","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288869,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/report.pdf"},{"id":288868,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":288870,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 172.45,51.21 ], [ 172.45,71.39 ], [ -129.99,71.39 ], [ -129.99,51.21 ], [ 172.45,51.21 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae784ae4b0abf75cf2d03c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth Jr.","contributorId":14374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284456,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It has been successfully applied to the analysis of tiny crystals, zones in minerals, and individual grains in mixed-mineral specimens such as thin or polished sections, on grains or areas about 0.5 mm in diameter, X-ray diffraction spindles, and small samples of powder weighing a fraction of a milligram have also been analyzed without any loss or alteration of the sample. Of great value in thin- and polished-section work is the fact that this technique can be used to analyze selected areas without mutilating the specimen by digging out grains.A modification of the curved-crystal spectrometer has made it possible to traverse a standard polished section in synchronization with a recorder, automatically plotting the distribution of various elements along a selected line. This method was applied, for example, to a polished section containing a central core of pyrite intergrown with and surrounded by a marcasite-like mineral. Chemical analysis of a concentrate of these two minerals gave selenium, cobalt, and iron as major constituents. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, made a regional gravity survey in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas in connection with the studies of the deflection of the vertical. About 550 gravity stations were occupied with spacings of 5 to 10 miles in parts of 54 counties, and a Bouguer anomaly map, contoured at intervals of 5 milligals, was drawn. In southeastern Kansas there is a lack of correlation of regional gravity with known regional structural geology. The observed gravity anomalies are apparently caused principally by variations of density in the Precambrian basement and indicate a basement of complex nature, made up of rocks of contrasting properties, with a regional grain striking predominantly west or west-northwest. In northeastern Oklahoma the several observed regional gravity anomalies indicate different degrees of correlation of regional gravity with regional structural geology. In the Precambrian highland area in Osage, Pawnee, and Creek Counties, there is a lack of correlation, as the gravity anomaly is probably caused chiefly by density contrasts within the basement complex. The anomaly associated with the Hunton arch is probably caused partly by structural relief of the rocks of pre-Pennsylvanian age and partly by density contrasts within the basement, and thus indicates some correlation. The steep gravity gradients along the outer flanks of the Ozark uplift indicate good correlation with the subsurface geology. The great anomaly over the Arkansas basin, which indicates a close correlation, is probably caused largely--but perhaps not entirely--by downwarping of the basement and pre-Pennsylvanian rocks.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1438221","usgsCitation":"Cook, K.L., 1956, Regional gravity survey in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas: Geophysics, v. 21, no. 1, p. 88-106, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1438221.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"88","endPage":"106","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380435,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.33935546875,\n              36.56260003738545\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.04296874999999,\n              36.56260003738545\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.04296874999999,\n              37.70120736474139\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.33935546875,\n              37.70120736474139\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.33935546875,\n              36.56260003738545\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"21","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cook, Kenneth L.","contributorId":91099,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cook","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804688,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The lag is most apparent when a single storm produces a flood wave that starts many miles upstream from the sampling sections.

","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR037i001p00056","usgsCitation":"Heidel, S.G., 1956, The progressive lag of sediment concentration with flood waves: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 37, no. 1, p. 56-66, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR037i001p00056.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"56","endPage":"66","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380426,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Bighorn River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.4075927734375,\n              44.879228141635245\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.9241943359375,\n              44.879228141635245\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.9241943359375,\n              45.34828480683999\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.4075927734375,\n              45.34828480683999\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.4075927734375,\n              44.879228141635245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"37","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heidel, Sumner Griggs","contributorId":97082,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Heidel","given":"Sumner","email":"","middleInitial":"Griggs","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804681,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The magnetic fields of the models were determined using the equipment at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oaks, Md. An irregularly shaped mass was approximated by an array of prismatic rectangular slabs of constant thickness and varying horizontal dimensions. Contoured maps are being prepared for these magnetic models at different depths and for several magnetic inclinations. The fields of these three-dimensional structures are obtained by superimposing the appropriate contoured maps and adding numerically the effects at each point. The equipment and laboratory methods are described. Theoretical and practical examples are given.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1438277","usgsCitation":"Zietz, I., and Henderson, R., 1956, A preliminary report on model studies of magnetic anomalies of three-dimensional bodies: Geophysics, v. 21, no. 3, p. 794-814, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1438277.","productDescription":"21 p.","startPage":"794","endPage":"814","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380424,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"21","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zietz, Isadore","contributorId":82223,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zietz","given":"Isadore","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804679,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Henderson, Roland G.","contributorId":65139,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henderson","given":"Roland G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804680,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
