Most of the withdrawal was made from the Mississippi River. However, some withdrawal of surface water was made from Lake Pontchartrain. A large part of the withdrawal from both ground- and surface-water sources is available for reuse. Ground-water withdrawal amounts to about 100 mgd and is primarily for industrial and commercial uses. The average flow of the Mississippi River for the 23-year period, 1931--54, amounted to 309,000 mgd, and the approximate average flow of all the tributaries to Lake Pontchartrain is about 4,000 mgd. The flow of the Pearl River, which adjoins the tributary drainage area of Lake Pontchartrain, averages about 8,000 mgd. Total withdrawal of ground and surface waters amounts to less than 3 percent of the recorded minimum flow of the Mississippi River or less than 1 percent of the average flow. Although large quantities of water are always available in the Mississippi River the quality of the Water is not suitable for all uses. \r\n\r\nStreams from the north that drain into Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain, and the aquifers in that area, offer one of the best sources of fresh water in the State. Industry, if located on the northern shores of Lake Maurepas or Lake Pontchartrain near the mouths of these tributaries, would be assured of an ample supply of either ground or surface water of excellent quality. All the tributaries north of Lake Pontchartrain have dry-weather flows which are dependable. The Pearl River above Bogalusa also is a good source of fresh water of excellent quality. At present it serves to dilute the tidal flow of salt water into Lake Pontchartrain through the Rigolets, the principal outlet of the lake. \r\n\r\nIn the area north of Lake Pontchartrain, wells 60 to 2,000 feet deep yield fresh water. There are no known wells tapping sands below 2,000 feet. However, electrical logs of. oil-test wells show that fresh water is available to a maximum depth of 3,000 feet. In the area south of Lake Pontchartrain, there is no withdrawal of ground water for public water supplies because of the saline content of the water. Three principal water-bearing sands, the '200-foot, ' '400-foot, ' and '700-foot'sands, are tapped in the New Orleans area south of Lake Pontchartrain for industrial and commercial use. In this area all deeper sands yield salt water. \r\n\r\nIn some areas the '200-foot' sand contains saline water of the sodium chloride type. Consequently, this sand is not developed extensively. Water from the \u001C200-foot' sand is relatively fresh north of the Mississippi River and becomes increasingly saline to the south and west. \r\n\r\nThe \u001C400-foot' sand is the second most highly developed aquifer in the New Orleans industrial district. The aquifer appears to be very prolific, but its full capabilities have not yet been determined. This aquifer yields a highly mineralized sodium chloride water in some areas; however, elsewhere it is a source of large quantities of fresh water. \r\n\r\nThe '700-foot' sand is the most continuous freshwater bearing sand in the area and is the principal source of fresh ground water in the New Orleans industrial district. Most of the wells tapping this aquifer yield soft water of the bicarbonate type. In the southern and western parts of the industrial district the water in the '700-foot' sand is too mineralized to be suitable for human consumption.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/cir374","usgsCitation":"Eddards, M.L., Kister, L., and Scarcia, G., 1956, Water resources of the New Orleans area, Louisiana: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 374, iv, 41 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir374.","productDescription":"iv, 41 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124471,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0374/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31101,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0374/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4783e4b07f02db483b3b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eddards, Miles LeRoy","contributorId":42949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eddards","given":"Miles","email":"","middleInitial":"LeRoy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147979,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kister, L. The fissure-fault intersections, which are considered to be favorable ore-locallizing structures, are concealed by lavas and tuffs several hundred feet thick that are strongly bleached and altered and which contain positive geochemical anomalies.

During the summer months of 1954 and 1955 for the U. S. Geological Survey, under contract, 9 exploration holes were drilled in the Trixie area: 1) to investigate the relations of surface geochemical anomalies to possible concealed ore, 2) to determine the structure and stratigraphic units in the sedimentary rocks concealed beneath the lava, and 3) to further develop and refine geologic and geochemical techniques that may be useful in prospecting for concealed ore deposits in the East Tintic and other mining districts.

This report briefly discusses the geology, hydrothermal alteration, and geochemical and geophysical anomalies in the Trixie area and presents the logs of the drill holes and tables of the copper, lead, zinc, and silver content, expressed in parts per million, of the drill cuttings and drill Results indicate that altered gray-green mudstone contains less carbonate than does unaltered red-brown mudstone. No significant difference exists between the carbonate content of unaltered light red sandstone and altered light gray sandstone. Within the sandstone there are carbonate-rich zones adjacent to contacts with mudstone. Calcium carbonate content and ore grade are not related, although carbonate-rich zones parallel the ore bodies. These carbonate-rich zones may possibly be used as an ore guide. The present distribution of calcium carbonate could have resulted from early diagenesis with later redistribution during mineralization.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The copper deposits occur both as low-grade disseminated ore in the Sacramento Hill stock and as massive sulfide (and secondary oxide and carbonate) replacement bodies in Paleozoic limestones that are intruded by the stock and related igneous bodies. The lead-zinc production has come almost entirely from limestone replacement bodies.
\n
\n
The disseminated ore exhibits no anomalous radioactivity, and samples from the Lavender pit contain from 0.002 to less than 0.001 percent equivalent uranium. The limestone replacement ores are distinctly radioactive and stoping areas can be readily distinguished from from unmineralized ground on the basis of radioactivity alone. The nature of these investigations ranged from field examinations of individual prospects or the laboratory analysis of significantly radioactive samples submitted by prospectors to reconnaissance studies of large districts. In this period no deposits of uranium or thorium that would warrant commercial exploitation were discovered. The investigations, however, disclosed that radioactive materials occur in widely scattered areas of Alaska and in widely diverse environments.
\n
\n
Many igneous rocks throughout Alaska are weakly radioactive because of uranium- and thorium-bearing accessory minerals, such as allanite, apatite, monazite, sphene, xenotime, and zircon; more rarely the radioactivity of these rocks is due to thorianite or thorite and their uranoan varieties. The felsic rocks, for example, granites and syenites, are generally more radioactive than the mafic igneous rocks. Pegmatites, locally, have also proved to be radioactive, but they have little commercial significance. No primary uranium oxide minerals have been found yet in Alaskan vein deposits, except, perhaps, for a mineral tentatively identified as pitchblende in the Hyder district of southeastern Alaska. However, certain occurrences of secondary uranium minerals, chiefly those of the uranite group, on the Seward Peninsula, in the Russian Mountains, and in the vicinity of Kodiak suggest that pitchblende-type ores may occur at depth beneath zones of alteration. Thorite-bearing veins have been discovered on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska.
\n
\n
Although no deposits or carnotite-type minerals have been found in Alaska, several samples containing such minerals have been submitted by Alaskan prospectors. Efforts to locate the deposits from which these minerals were obtained have been unsuccessful, but review of available geologic data suggests that several Alaskan areas are potentially favorable for carnotite-type deposits. The chief of these areas is the Alaska Peninsula-Cook Inlet area which encompasses most of the reported occurrences of the prospectors' carnotite-type samples.
\n
\n
Alaska is also potentially favorable for the occurrence of large bodies of the very low-grade uraniferous sedimentary rocks, such as phosphorites and black shales. This type of deposit, however, has not received much study because of the emphasis on the search for bonanza-type high-grade ores. Uraniferous phosphorites similar to those of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming occur in northern Alaska on the north flank of the Brooks Range; black shales comparable to the uraniferous shales of the Chattanooga formation of southeastern United States have been noted along the Yukon River near the international boundary.
\n
\n
Placer deposits in Alaska have some small potential for the production of the radioactive elements as byproducts of gold- and tin-placer mining. the placer area believed to have the relatively greatest potential in Alaska lies in the Kahiltna River valley where concentrates are known to contain such commercial minerals as ilmenite, cassiterite, platinum, and gold in addition to uranothorianite and monazite.
\n
\n
The possibilities of the natural fluids--water and petroleum--have not yet been tested in Alaska to any great extent. Studies of fluids are in progress to determine whether they may be used to discover and define areas potentially favorable for the occurrence of uraniferous lodes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei577","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., 1956, Summary of reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in Alaska, 1945-1954, and an appraisal of Alaskan uranium possibilities: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 577, Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei577.","productDescription":"Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches","numberOfPages":"112","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288869,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/report.pdf"},{"id":288868,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":288870,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 172.45,51.21 ], [ 172.45,71.39 ], [ -129.99,71.39 ], [ -129.99,51.21 ], [ 172.45,51.21 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae784ae4b0abf75cf2d03c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth Jr.","contributorId":14374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284456,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It has been successfully applied to the analysis of tiny crystals, zones in minerals, and individual grains in mixed-mineral specimens such as thin or polished sections, on grains or areas about 0.5 mm in diameter, X-ray diffraction spindles, and small samples of powder weighing a fraction of a milligram have also been analyzed without any loss or alteration of the sample. Of great value in thin- and polished-section work is the fact that this technique can be used to analyze selected areas without mutilating the specimen by digging out grains.A modification of the curved-crystal spectrometer has made it possible to traverse a standard polished section in synchronization with a recorder, automatically plotting the distribution of various elements along a selected line. This method was applied, for example, to a polished section containing a central core of pyrite intergrown with and surrounded by a marcasite-like mineral. Chemical analysis of a concentrate of these two minerals gave selenium, cobalt, and iron as major constituents. A clear relationship between the cobalt, selenium, and iron was established by the X-ray method, identifying the second mineral as an intermediate member of the FeSe 2 -CoSe 2 series.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologist","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.52.6.694","usgsCitation":"Adler, I., and Axelrod, J.M., 1956, Reflecting curved-crystal X-ray spectrograph; a device for the analysis of small mineral samples: Economic Geology, v. 52, no. 6, p. 694-701, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.52.6.694.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"694","endPage":"701","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380470,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"52","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1957-09-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Adler, I.","contributorId":13371,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Adler","given":"I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804772,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Axelrod, J.
