It is on the west side of Latouche Island about two miles southwest of the old mining camp of Latouche. Pyrite deposits crop out about one-half mile from the head of the bay (see fig. 1) and in the lower part of a broad basin-like valley at altitudes between 125 feet and 650 feet. The valley, which is a mile wide and two miles long, is open to the see on the northwest side and is bordered on the northeast, southeast and southwest by a high sharp-crested ridge that reaches a maximum altitude of 2,255 feet. The area can easily be reached by chartered small boat or float plane from Cordova or other towns in this part of Alaska. I visited the locality on August 21-22, 1954, accompanied by Mike Goggans, of Anchorage, who volunteered to guide me to the locality, and by Joe Schneller, of the Two Joe Fish Co. on the Beluga River, who furnished a boat and outboard motors and served as boatman. During 1948 to 1950, the Geological Survey studied and mapped the pegmatites in an area of about 58 square miles near Middletown. The primary objectives of the mapping were to determine beryllium resources of the Middletown area, and to ascertain relationships of beryl-bearing pegmatites to non-beryl-bearing pegmatites and to The work was done by the Geological Survey in 1950.
