The Boise Valley, adjoining on the north, was reclaimed from similar land and irrigated with Boise River water. The productivity of about 100,000 acres of the valley land is lowered or threatened, however, by an ever-rising water table, caused to rise by infiltration of excess irrigation water. Surface drains alleviate the drainage problem but areas of water-logging, alkaline land, and inferior vegetation continue to spread.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Boise, ID","doi":"10.3133/ofr55119","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Nace, R.L., West, S.W., and Mower, R.W., 1955, Feasibility of ground-water features of the alternate plan for the Mountain Home Project, Idaho: abstract and summary: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 55-119, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr55119.","productDescription":"24 p.","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":289853,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":289852,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0119/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Boise Valley;Mountain Home Plateau","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,41.99 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.04,49.0 ], [ -111.04,41.99 ], [ -117.24,41.99 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc7e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nace, Raymond L.","contributorId":93460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nace","given":"Raymond","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"West, S. The tests were a part of the State - Federal cooperative study of the ground-water resources of Frederick County, and it is intended that a more complete analysis of the test data will be included in a future report describing the ground-water resource of Frederick County. The purpose of this memorandum is to make the test data immediately available to the general public.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Mount Airy is located along the Carroll-Frederick County boundary bout 2 miles north of the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 with the county boundary. Its population is approximately 1,000. The municipal well field, consisting of two drilled wells (fig. 1) is in a valley about one-half mile west of the center of Mount Airy, within about 400 feet of a small stream, and north of Prospect Road. Well 1, about 40 feet north of Prospect Road, is 125 feet deep, 8 inches in diameter, and reportedly yielded 265 gallons per minute (gpm) in 1947 and 201 gpm in a half hour test in March 1955. The writer determined during the tests described in this memorandum that the well has about 34 feet of casing. Well 2, 85 feet north of well 1, is 96 feet deep, 8 inches in diameter, and reportedly yielded 120 gpm in 1947 and 127 gpm in a half hour test in March 1955. The wells are equipped with deep-well turbine pumps powered by electric motors. Cenorally only well 1 is used, and it is pumped for only a few short intervals each day to meet the water requirements of the town (about 75,000 - 80,000 gallons daily). The reported yields of these wells are considerably higher than the average for crystalline-rock wells in the Piedmont of Maryland.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The test drilling was done under contract with Edward I. Brown, well driller, between May 3 and May 12, 1955. Water-supply facilities of the town of Mount Airy were kindly made available for the aquifer tests from May 22 to May 30, 1955.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The pumping tests consisted of a step-drawdown and interference test on the public-supply wells on May 30, 1955, and aquifer test in which public-supply well 1 was pumped constantly for 48 hours and the effect of this pumpage was measured in all the wells and test holes on May 23-25.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr55110","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Maryland Dept. Faults, confined to a narrow easterly-trending zone through the mine, cut all the Precambrian rocks.</p>\n<p>Mineral deposits of two types are present at the mines 1) sulfide-magnetite ore and 2) a uranium deposit in a filled fissure that cuts the skarn. The sulfide-magnetite deposits are small and consist of pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and at places magnetite. Alpha-helium age determinations on ore magnetite by Hurley indicate that the mineral assemblage is late Precambrian in age. The deposits are pyrometasomatic in origin and possibly related to the granite.</p>\n<p>The uranium deposit consists of pitchblende and associated vein-forming minerals that occur in the Copper King fault and locally in pyrite boxwork adjacent to the fault. Three phases of black pitchblende have been identified -- uraninite, \"coffinite\", and UO<sub>3</sub>-rich pitchblend. Colored secondary minerals are absent. The pitchblende occurs in a steeply plunging, tabular shoot between 45 and 135 feet below the surface that has a horizontal length of about 50 feet. Within the shoot the pitchblende occurs in pods or layers generally only a few feet in height and length and as much as a foot thick that are separated by nearly barren vein. The grade of the ore within the pods ranges from 0.2 percent uranium to as much as 20 percent but averages about 1 to 2 percent. Age determinations by the Pb<sup>206</sup>/U<sup>238</sup> and Pb<sup>207</sup>/U<sup>235</sup>&nbsp;methods on two samples of hard pitchblende from the vein, not from the pyrite boxwork, gave ages by the two methods after suitable common lead corrections, ranging from 55 to 76 million years, corresponding to an early Tertiary age.</p>\n<p>Diamond core drilling and reconnaissance for radioactivity have not disclosed other uranium deposits the Prairie Divide region; nevertheless, it seems likely that other deposits are present.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The oldest rocks sampled are Ordovician in age, and the youngest are Recent. Although none of the deposits are of value at this time as a source of uranium, some of the deposits may constitute a low grade uranium resource whose recovery will depend upon the primary use to which the asphalt is placed.</p>\n<p>Significant amounts of uranium in the ash of the extracted oil were found in samples from 7 of the 45 areas examined. These areas are Chalone Creek, McKittrick, Edna, and Los Alamos areas, California: Vernal area, Utah; Sulphur area, Oklahoma; and the Ellis area, Missouri. The average uranium content of samples from these seven areas ranges: from 0.028 to 0.376 percent in the ash of the extracted oil. &nbsp;All except the Chalone Creek area contain large estimated reserves of asphalt-bearing rock, ranging from 15,000,000 to almost 2,000,000,000 tons.&nbsp; The average uranium content of samples from 13 additional areas ranges from 0.020 to 0.068 percent in the ash of the extracted oil. &nbsp;Many of these areas contain very large reserves of asphalt-bearing rocks.</p>\n<p>Evaluation of field data indicates that naturally occurring asphalts with a relatively high uranium content probably originated in, or migrated through, rocks that contain more than average amounts of uranium. It is believed that some of the uranium was present as an original constituent of the oil but that some uranium may have been introduced during migration of the These strata are discrete lithologic units that contain sedimentary structures oriented in a prevailing easterly direction, they locally rest upon sandstone in the Salt Wash that is ore bearing, and they are believed to cover about one-third of the underlying Salt Wash sandstone member in southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. Easterly trending planar cross-stratification and trough cross-stratification-type bedding and a general westward coarsening of sediments in the strata suggest they are the products of stream aggradation from westerly source areas.</p>\n<p>Uranium-vanadium deposits in the uppermost, almost continuous, layer of sandstone of the Salt Wash member have been classified according to their association with the conglomerate strata. Of the 364 deposits that have been studied in the uppermost sandstone layer of the Salt Wash, 29 percent of the total are directly below a conglomeratic sandstone stratum, 61 percent are below their projected trend, 6 percent are beyond the safe limits of projection, and 4 percent are lateral to their margins. Locally, a conglomeratic sandstone stratum may be mineralized.&nbsp; Where this happens, it is usually near clusters of deposits in the uppermost sandstone of the underlying Salt Wash member.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Late Jurassic Morrison ground-water conditions can be postulated to localize uranium-vanadium rich ground water below the conglomerate strata.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei565","usgsCitation":"Phoenix, D.A., 1955, Conglomeratic sandstone strata at the base of the This order apparently represents increasing structural damage by radiation; if so, it correlates with decreasing specific gravity, increasing index of refraction, broadening of X-ray lines, and increasingly strong exothermic reactions on annealing. The differences between the samples in index of refraction and X-ray pattern are largely eliminated on annealing. &nbsp;Annealing begins at 1750 C; thermoluminescence at lower temperatures is due to electrons escaping from the metastable potential traps, not the destruction of those traps which takes place on annealing.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei569","usgsCitation":"Berman, R., 1955, Some physical properties of naturally irradiated fluorite: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 569, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei569.","productDescription":"24 p.","numberOfPages":"25","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":90864,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/569/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":186568,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/569/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e8e4b07f02db5e8763","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berman, Robert","contributorId":13315,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berman","given":"Robert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284443,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This study describes the use of tartaric acid as a masking reagent for zirconium. Three tartaric acid-thoron systems, developed for the determination of thorium, differ with respect to the concentrations of thoron and tartaric acid. Mesotataric acid, used in one of the systems, is found to be most effective in masking zirconium.
