Dak. A vertical section of the basal l-foot of the channel contains 0.25 percent uranium. Small amounts of metatyuyamunite (?) occur in the upper part of a freshwater limestone bed in the Chadron formation, and carnotite occurs in chalcedony veins in the overlying Brule formation, also of Oligocene age. The source of the uranium is thought to have been volcanic ash in the Brule formation and the overlying rocks of Miocene age. Based on the concept of an elementary source of infinite\nthickness rather than on the classical point source, semi-empirical\nexpressions, are developed for measured gamma-radiation intensities from\n. the two extreme types of natural, thick uranium sources, the elementary\n(point) and t-he broad (semi-infinite) source. These expressions agree\nboth with extensive experimental data and with the form and structure\nof theory.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Theoretical computations based on published solutions of the\nBoltzmann equation for ga.m.ma-ray transport in one medium agree closely\nwith experimental measurements. This report contains information concerning the geology of the bentonite deposits of the Northern Black Hills district. An attempt is made to explain some of the relations that exist between the physical properties and the mineralogical characteristics of the bentonite. Consideration is given to the occurrence of bentonite deposits and different types of sedimentary rocks and to depositional and post-depositional conditions which these rocks reveal. They were reported by field parties of the U.S. Geological Survey during the mapping of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 and adjacent areas. The deposits are sedimentary in origin and are confined to a thin zone in the Lisburne group of Mississippian age. Six of the localities are in a narrow belt along the north front of the Brooks gang between the Anaktuvuk and Okokmilaga rivers. The seventh is near the Ipnavik River about 100 miles northwest of the Okokmilaga River. At all but two of these localities the zone of soft phosphatic rocks does not crop out extensively and samples of phosphate rock were collected chiefly from float or talus. Little or nothing is known about the thickness and extent of the deposits. Near Chandler Lake on the upper Kiruktagiak River and 11 miles west of at the head of Tiglukpuk Creek, the phosphatic zone is well-exposed. This paper is a preliminary report on the results of a detailed examination of the phosphatic zone in these two areas during the summer of 1953.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
