In eastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern \r\nNew Mexico, and in part of western Colorado, the Morrison may be divided \r\ninto a lower part and an upper part; each part has two members which are \r\ndi1Ierentiated on a lithologic basis. \r\n\r\nWhere differentiated, the lower part of the Morrison consists either of the \r\nSalt Wash member or the Recapture member or both; these are equivalent \r\nin age and inter tongue and intergrade over a broad area in the vicinity of the \r\nFour Corners area of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The Salt \r\nWash member is present in eastern Utah and parts of western Colorado, north- \r\neastern Arizona, and northwestern New Mexico. It was formed as a large \r\nalluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams diverging \r\nto the north and east from an apex in south-central Utah. The major source \r\narea of the Salt Wash was to the southwest of south-central Utah, probably in \r\nwest-central Arizona and southeastern California. The member was derived \r\nmainly from sedimentary rocks. The Salt Wash deposits grade from predomi- \r\nnantly coarse texture at the apex of the 'fan' to predominantly flne texture at \r\nthe margin of the 'fan'. \r\n\r\nThe Salt Wash member has been arbitrarily divided into four facies: a con- \r\nglomera tic sandstone facies, a sandstone and mudstone facies, a claystone and \r\nlenticular sandstone facies, and a claystone and limestone facies. \r\n\r\nThe Recapture member of the Morrison formation is present in northeastern \r\nArizona, northwestern New Mexico, and small areas of southeastern Utah \r\nand southwestern Colorado near the Four Corners. It was formed as a large \r\nalluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams. The Recap- \r\nture deposits grade from predominantly coarse texture sedimentary rocks to \r\npredominantly fine texture and have been arbitrarily divided into three facies: \r\na conglomeratic sandstone facies, a sandstone facies, and a claystone and \r\nsandstone facies. The distribution of the facies indicates that the major source area of the Recapture was south of Gallup, N. Mex., probably in west-central New Mexico. The Recapture was derived from an area of intrusive and \r\nextrusive igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and sedimentary rocks. \r\n\r\nThe upper part of the Morrison formation consists of the Westwater Canyon \r\nmember and the Brushy Basin member. The Westwater Canyon member forms \r\nthe lower portion of the upper part of the Morrison in northeastern Arizona, \r\nnorthwestern New Mexico, and places in southeastern Utah and southwestern \r\nColorade near the Four Corners, and it intertongues and intergrades northward \r\ninto the Brushy Basin member. The Westwater Canyon member was formed \r\nas a large alluvial plain or 'fan' by an aggrading system of braided streams. \r\nThe Westwater deposits grade from predominantly coarse-textured sedimentary \r\nrocks to somewhat finer textured sedimentary rocks, and have been arbitrarily \r\ndivided into two facies: a conglomeratic sandstone facies and a sandstone \r\nfacies. The distribution of the facies indicates that the major source area \r\nof the Westwater was south of Gallup, N. Mex., probably in west-central New \r\nMexico. It is bounded on the south by the Wind River and Warm Spring Creek, which flow along the northeast flank of the Wind River Mountains, and on the north by the steep scarps of the southern margin of the Absaroka Mountains. Rugged mountainous terrain dominates both the southwest and northern portions of the mapped area while badland topography and deeply dissected upland surfaces characterize the central part. One of the most significant physiographic and structural features of the region is a belt of folded and faulted Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, referred to as the Washakie Range, which lies along the southern margin of the Absaroka Mountains. These highlands, attaining elevations of es much as 10,000 feet, were buried by Tertiary volcanic debris and subsequently partly exhumed as the Wind River Basin was reexcavated by Wind River and its tributaries.</p><p>The sedimentary rocks exposed in the Du Noir area are more than 12,500 feet thick and range in age from Cambrian to Recent. All systems, with the exception of the Silurian, are represented. Precambrian granite and granite gneiss are present in both the Wind River and Washakie Ranges.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
