Previously the Hoskinnini had been recognized only in the Monument Valley region of southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona.\r\n\r\nThe Hoskinnini tongue is pale reddish brown and is composed mainly of silt and very fine-grained sand and minor quantities of fine, medium, and coarse sand grains.  The Hoskinnini is indistinctly bedded in horizontal beds generally ranging from 1 to 2 feet thick, and individual beds are composed of indistinct \r\ndiscontinuous wavy laminae bounded by grayish-red clay or silt films.\r\n \r\nThe Hoskinnini is generally 50 to 120 feet thick but ranges up to 126 feet thick' Pinchouts of the Hoskinnini on the west are abrupt, and the Hoskinnini near some of these pinchouts contains unusual features such as intraformational and chert pebble conglomerates, contorted stratification, and petroliferous material.\r\n\r\nThe combination of coarse grains in the finer-grained matrix and discontinuous wavy laminae serve to differentiate the Hoskinnini tongue from the underlying and overlying formations' The distinctive combination of grain size and wavy laminae also assures correlation of the Hoskinnini with rocks not previously \r\ncorrelated with the Hoskinnini in southeastern Utah and adjoining parts of Colorado.\r\n\r\nAlthough the Hoskinnini tongue is cUJITently classified as a part of the Permian Cutler formation, stratigraphic relations show the Hoskinnini to be conttasted with typical Cutler rocks and to be closely related to the Lower and Middle (?) Abnormal radioactivity was recorded in 8 of the 10 areas surveyed. The anomalies are located in Bradford, Clay, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Lake, Marion, Orange, Sumter, Taylor, and Union Counties. \r\n\r\nTwo of the anomalies were investigated briefly on the ground. One resulted from a deposit of river-pebble phosphate in the Peace River valley; the river-pebble samples contain an average of 0.013 percent equivalent uranium. The other anomaly resulted from outcrops of leached phosphatic rock containing as much as 0. 016 percent equivalent uranium. Several anomalies in other areas were recorded at or near localities where phosphate deposits have been reported.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Observers in a U. S. Navy plane, 50 miles away, and in King Salmon, 75 miles away, reported an initial column of smoke that rose to an estimated 30, 000 feet. Thick smoke and fog on the succeeding 2 days prevented observers from identifying the erupting volcano or assessing the severity of the eruption. It is almost certain, however, that during the latter part of this foggy period, either Mount Martin or Mount Mageik, or both, were also erupting sizable ash clouds nearby. The first close aerial observations were made in clear weather on February 18. At this time a thick, blocky lava flow was seen issuing slowly from a new vent at an altitude of 3,600 feet on the southwest flank of Trident Volcano. Other volcanic orifices in the area were only steaming mildly on this and succeeding days. Observations made in the following weeks from Naval aircraft patrolling the area indicated that both gas and ash evolution and lava extrusion from the Trident vent were continuing without major interruption. By March 11 an estimated 80-160 million cubic yards of rock material had been extruded. Air photographs taken in April and June show that the extrusion of lava had continued intermittently and, by June 17, the volume of the pile was perhaps 300-400 million cubic yards of rock material. Ash eruptions also apparently occurred sporadically during this period, the last significant surge taking place June 30. The 80 meter high working face of the quarry exposes the complete section of the \"Ludian\" [the youngest beds of the Eocene] with its alternations of the marl and gypsum. Above is the sequence of supra-gypseous marls of the [lower oligocene] Sannosian stage, overlain by a very complex series of alternation brackish water and lacustrine layers, from blue marls to Brie limestone, up through the white Pantin marls, brown marls containing the pelecypod genus Cyrena and green marls. Dak. Correlation diagrams prepared from drill, cores obtained from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission indicate that the uranium is most abundant in two sandstone units, separated by mudstone in the Lakota sandstone of Early Cretaceous age. The lower uraniferous unit is composed of thick beds of very fine- to fine-grained sandstone with a few interfingering lentils of mudstone. The upper uraniferous unit is composed of interfingering beds of very fine-, fine-, and coarse-grained sandstone and mudstone.</p>\n<p>The uranium deposits on Long Mountain and in the area to the west are most numerous in a northeast-trending zone about a mile wide between two normal faults.
