Record-breaking floods occurred June 27, 28, 1954, in the Devils and lower Pecos Rivers and in some tributaries to those streams, caused by heavy rainfall of June 26-28. At the time of the flood the geological Survey was not operating a gaging station in the Devils River basin or in the Pecos river basin below Girvin. Continuous records of the flow of Devils River were obtained by the Geological Survey at the station at Baker's Crossing near Juno from May 1925 to September 1949 and on the Pecos River near Sheffield from October 1921 to April 1925 and from October 1939 to September 1949. Records of the great flood flows near the mouths of the Devils and Pecos Rivers mentioned above were obtained by the International Boundary and Water Commission, United States and Mexico, at gaging stations maintained by that agency on the Devils River near Del Rio and the Pecos River near Comstock. The outstanding nature of the flood in the lower Pecos River is shown by the fact that the maximum stage reached at the Comstock gaging station was 97.8 ft on June 27, 1954, whereas the maximum stage reached at this gage between the beginning of record in 1900 and 1954 was only 38.2 ft.

Because of the severe drought conditions and the turmoil brought about by it, observations of discharge were made at 46 points within that part of the Spring basin that lies within the State of Missouri. Three of these measurements were made at regular gaging stations.

The country rocks are tuffs and flows of the Casto volcanics of Permian (?) age and the Challis volcanics of late Oligocene or early Miocene age. The known deposits are in a belt about 3 miles long and 2 miles wide and crop out at altitudes between 5,100 feet and 7,200 feet above sea level. The principal vein minerals are fluorite, chalcedony, and barite. The fluorite occurs as lodes, crusts around fragments of rock, and replacements of fine breccia. Numerous occurrences of uranium have been found in the Long Mountain area, Fall River County, S. Dak. Correlation diagrams prepared from drill, cores obtained from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission indicate that the uranium is most abundant in two sandstone units, separated by mudstone in the Lakota sandstone of Early Cretaceous age. The lower uraniferous unit is composed of thick beds of very fine- to fine-grained sandstone with a few interfingering lentils of mudstone. The upper uraniferous unit is composed of interfingering beds of very fine-, fine-, and coarse-grained sandstone and mudstone.

The uranium deposits on Long Mountain and in the area to the west are most numerous in a northeast-trending zone about a mile wide between two normal faults. The deposits between these faults are in two groups of different trend; the northern group has been incompletely explored.

The sedimentary structures of the upper and lower mineralized sandstone between the faults have controlled the deposition of uranium and vanadium.
