The Shinarump No. 1 mine, which is in the lowermost zone, is located on the west flank of the Moab anticline near the Moab fault. \r\n\r\nThe Shinarump No. 1 uranium deposit consists of discontinuous lenticular layers of mineralized rock, irregular in outline, that, in general, follow the bedding. Ore minerals, mainly uraninite, impregnate the rock. High-grade ore seams of uraninite and chalcocite occur along bedding planes. Uraninite formed later than, or simultaneous with, most sulfides, and the chalcocite may be of two ages, with some being later than uraninite. Uraninite and chalcocite are concentrated in the more poorly sorted parts of siltstones. In the Seven Mile Canyon area guides to ore inferred from the study of the Shinarump No. 1 deposit are the presence of bleached siltstone, carbonaceous matter, and copper sulfides. Results of spectrographic analysis indicate that the mineralizing solutions contained important amounts of barium, vanadium, uranium, and copper, as well as lesser amounts of strontium, chromium, boron, yttrium, lead, and zinc. \r\n\r\nThe origin of the Shinarump No. 1 deposit is thought to be hydrothermal.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/cir336","usgsCitation":"Finch, W.I., 1954, Geology of the Shinarump No. 1 uranium mine, Seven Mile Canyon area, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 336, ii, 14 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir336.","productDescription":"ii, 14 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123198,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0336/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31042,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0336/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e5c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finch, Warren Irvin","contributorId":55794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Finch","given":"Warren","email":"","middleInitial":"Irvin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147890,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The dike is semi-circular in form, has a maximum width of about 100 feet, and is about 500 feet long. Small associated arcuate dikes are arranged in spiral fashion around the main dike, suggesting that they were intruded along shear fractures similar to those described by Burbank (1941). The fused rocks surrounding the andesite dike are of three general types: 1) partly fused arkosic sand, 2) fused clay, and 3) hybrid rocks. The fused arkosic sand consists of relict detrital grains of quartz, orthoclose, and plagioclase, imbedded in colorless glass containing microlites of tridymite, cordierite, and magnetite. The relict quartz grains are corroded and embayed by glass; the orthoclase is sanidinized and partly fused; and the plagioclase is inverted to the high temperature form and is partly fused. The fused clay, which was originally a mixture of montmorillonite and hydromica, consists primarily of cordierite but also contains needle-like crystals of sillimanite (?) or mullite (?). The hybrid rocks originated in part by intermixing of fused arkosic sediments and andesitic liquid and in part by diffusion of mafic constituents through the fused sediments. They are rich in cordierite and magnetite and also contain hypersthene, augite, and plagioclase. The composition of pigeonite in the andesite indicates that the temperature of the andesite at the time of intrusion probably did not exceed 1200?C. Samples of arkosic sand were fused in the presence of water in a Morey bomb at 1050?C. Stability relations of certain minerals in the fused sand suggest that fusion may have taken place at a lower temperature, however, and the fluxing action of volatiles from the andesite are thought to have made this possible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr5414","usgsCitation":"Bailey, R.A., 1954, Fusion of arkosic sand by intrusive andesite: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-14, 87 p. ill. The Missouri and Little Missouri Rivers flow through the area and form part of its boundaries. Garrison Dam, which is under construction on the Missouri River 30 miles downstream from the east boundary of the reservation, will impound water in Garrison Reservoir and flood the valleys of both rivers throughout the area. The reservoir will divide the reservation into five parts, herein referred to as the eastern, northeastern, northern, western, and southern segments. \n\nRock formations ranging in age from Paleocene to Recent are exposed. The Fort Union formation of Paleocene age underlies the entire reservation, and it crops out along the Missouri and Little Missouri Rivers. Relatively thin glacial till and outwash deposits of late Pleistocene age mantle much of the upland in all of the segments. The glacial de. posits commonly are less than 10 feet thick; in many places they consist only of scattered boulders on the bedrock surface. The major valleys have terrace deposits of Pleistocene and Recent age and alluvium of Recent age. \n\nThe principal mineral resources of the reservation are lignite, sand, and gravel. The lignite beds range in thickness from a few inches to about 30 feet. At least four separate beds, which range in thickness from 4 feet to more than 7 feet, are mined locally. Although many mines will be flooded after Garrison Dam is completed, many suitable mine sites will remain above the proposed reservoir level. Sand and gravel deposits are found in glacial outwash and in stream-terrace deposits. \n\nOn upland areas of the reservation ground water is available principally from the lignite and the associated fine- to medium-grained sandstone beds of the Fort Union formation. Few wells on the reservation are known to produce water from glacial material, although the recessional moraines are possible sources of shallow-water supplies. Small quantities of ground water are available from thin alluvial deposits in some places on the upland. Most wells in the valleys produce water from the alluvium or the terrace deposits. However, several wells penetrate the underlying Fort Union formation. A few flowing wells in the Missouri River valley near Elbowoods produce water from either the lower part of the Fort Union formation or from the Cannonball formation, also of Paleocene age. The chemical character of water from the Fort Union formation and the outwash and river gravels was determined from analyses of 39 samples from wells and springs. Water from bedrock may be either hard or soft, and it is moderately to highly mineralized. Water from the surficial deposits is uniformly hard, but it is less mineralized. Shallow wells in the eastern and northeastern segments produce water of good quality. Wells in these segments, and several springs in the western segment, could be used satisfactorily as domestic supplies. Spring water from lignite deposits on the reservation generally is colored and contains objectionable amounts of iron. Treatment of the water would improve its quality for domestic use. \n\nThe filling of Garrison Reservoir will cause a rise of the water levels in wells that tap aquifers now discharging below the operating level of the reservoir. All the permeable strata below this level will become saturated, and ground-water bodies that are now separated will become hydraulically united. In addition to providing subsurface information, the drilling program of the U. S. Bureau of Indian Affairs provided wells for domestic and stock-water supplies. All test holes that tapped an adequate supply of potable water were reamed to a larger diameter, equipped with casing and well screen, and gravel-packed. J. to Marcus Hook, Pa., for the period August 1949 to December 1952. The Delaware River is the principal source of water for the many industries and municipal water supplies along this reach of the river and both industries and municipalities use it for the disposal of their wastes. Consequently, a study of the quality of the water and variations in the quality caused by changes in streamflow, tidal effects, pollution and other factors is important to the many users. In both New Jersey and Pennsylvania steps are being taken to abate pollution, thus it is of more than passing interest to measure the effects of waste treatment on the quality of the Delaware River water.
\n
\n
At average or higher rates of streamflow the mineral content of the water increases slightly from Trenton to Marcus Hook. There is little variation in the concentration of dissolved minerals from bank to bank or from top to bottom of the river. At times of protracted low rates of flow the effect of ocean water mixing with the river water may be noted as far upstream as Philadelphia. At such times the salinity is often greater near the bottom of the river than near the top. The increase in chloride concentration upstream from Philadelphia is small compared to the rapid increase downstream from Philadelphia. Temperatures of offshore water vary with the season, but on a given day are substantially uniform throughout the reach of the river from Trenton to Marcus Hook.
\n
\n
The water contains less dissolved oxygen as it flows downstream indicating that oxygen is being consumed by oxidizable matter. From Philadelphia downstream there are periods, especially in late summer, when the dissolved oxygen is barely sufficient to meet the oxygen demands of the pollution load.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1262","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Philadelphia","usgsCitation":"Durfor, C.N., and Keighton, W.B., 1954, Chemical characteristics of Delaware River water, Trenton, New Jersey, to Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1262, Report: iv, 173 p.; Plate: 7.73 x 17.85 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1262.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 173 p.; Plate: 7.73 x 17.85 inches","numberOfPages":"178","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","temporalStart":"1949-08-01","temporalEnd":"1952-12-31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137034,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1262/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26288,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1262/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":277924,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1262/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey;Pennsylvania","city":"Marcus Hook;Philadelphia;Trenton","otherGeospatial":"Delaware River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -76.4923,38.6855 ], [ -76.4923,42.4924 ], [ -74.2841,42.4924 ], [ -74.2841,38.6855 ], [ -76.4923,38.6855 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e499ee4b07f02db5bc6c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Durfor, Charles N.","contributorId":50881,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Durfor","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143514,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keighton, Walter B.","contributorId":81877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keighton","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143515,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

As much as 26 inches of rain fell in the Guadalupe River basin and in the central and lower Colorado River basin and broke the extended drought. The belt of the heavy rainfall was about 60 miles wide and extended northwest from New Braunfels for a distance of about 200 miles. The greatest concentration occurred along the divide between the Colorado and Guadalupe River basins. Record floods occurred on many large and small streams. Inflow into Lake Travis on the Colorado River reached 803,000 cfs from a 6, 650 square mile contributing area. Five persons were killed and 454 homes damaged. The underlying bedrock of pre-Cambrian age contains little or no water. The source of ground water is local precipitation. Information was collected on more than 300 wells in the area. Movement of ground water is generally southward and locally toward streams. Discharge is by streams and subsurface flow. Fluctuations of water levels in wells show a close correlation with seasonal precipitation and with average precipitation over a period of years. Pumping tests made at the city of Antigo's well field gave a coefficient of transmissibility of 62,000 gpd per ft and a coefficient of storage of 0.15 for the outwash deposits. It is estimated that recharge to a 90-squaremile area of the Antigo flats averages about 30,000 acre-feet per year. Of the 1,100 acrefeet pumped from wells in 1948, 69 percent was for municipal supply, 26 percent for rural supply, and 5 percent for irrigation. Use of water for irrigation has caused no measurable decline of water levels in the area as a whole.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1294","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin","usgsCitation":"Harder, A.H., and Drescher, W.J., 1954, Ground-water conditions in southwestern Langlade County, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1294, Report: iv, 39 p.; 1 Plate: 16.00 x 14.38 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1294.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 39 p.; 1 Plate: 16.00 x 14.38 inches","numberOfPages":"43","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26952,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1294/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137010,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1294/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26951,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1294/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Langlade County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-89.0467,45.4668],[-88.9233,45.4659],[-88.9251,45.4014],[-88.9265,45.3909],[-88.9259,45.3799],[-88.802,45.3775],[-88.754,45.3782],[-88.7196,45.3784],[-88.6781,45.3787],[-88.6783,45.3654],[-88.6784,45.3554],[-88.6791,45.2946],[-88.6802,45.2051],[-88.6395,45.2048],[-88.6399,45.1171],[-88.6574,45.1172],[-88.6826,45.1174],[-88.7343,45.1172],[-88.8118,45.1177],[-88.8623,45.1175],[-88.9301,45.1182],[-88.9818,45.118],[-88.9812,45.0299],[-89.1019,45.0293],[-89.2239,45.0297],[-89.2242,45.1187],[-89.3024,45.1184],[-89.3457,45.1184],[-89.4258,45.1189],[-89.4257,45.2057],[-89.4256,45.293],[-89.4268,45.3802],[-89.4274,45.4707],[-89.3013,45.4692],[-89.174,45.4681],[-89.0467,45.4668]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Langlade\",\"state\":\"WI\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66d378","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harder, Alfred Harry","contributorId":8824,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harder","given":"Alfred","email":"","middleInitial":"Harry","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144173,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drescher, William James","contributorId":95448,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drescher","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"James","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":144174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
