The Sainte-Adresse Cliff in the neighborhood of Le Havre was subject in the past to repeated movements of greater of lesser scope which in 1944 have become markedly accentuated because of works on the \"Atlantic Wall\" and bomb and mine explosions.

The situation became dangerous and required a complete study including geological and geotechnical surveys with borings and search of slip planes.

\n

The study enabled us to explain the mechanism of the observed movements and to establish a program of consolidating works.

Preliminary geologic mapping of the Little Susitna district in 1952 showed that an area of at least 140 square miles is underlain by coal-bearing rocks of Tertiary age, and indicated that coal beds of minable quality and thickness might be present at several localities. Detailed exploration with a bulldozer and power auger was done at these localities in 1953 and 1954 with special attention to strip-mining possibilities.

All the beds examined at the four localities tested were judged to be either too thin or too dirty to be minable under present conditions, and none of them are favorably situated for strip mining.

It is suggested that the high alumina quartzite beds are metamorphosed beds of sandy or silty clay; these beds probably represent one stage in the deposition of fine grained clayey clastic sediments. \r\n\r\nNo evidence was found to support the view of Smith and Newcombe (1951) that the kyanite at Henry Knob developed by hudrothermal introduction of alumina. They checked very closely with those done by Kofler in 1913. \r\n\r\nThe distribution of radon in stream waters and related springs was investigated in the Wasatch Mountains adjacent to Salt Lake City, Utah, and in a part of the Weber River near Ogden, Utah. \r\n\r\nThe radon distribution in the stream waters studied forms a definite pattern which is dependent upon the local influx Of relatively large amounts of radon-bearing ground water into the stream, and, in turn, the ability of the stream to lose its radon to the atmosphere through turbulence. The ability of the stream to lose its radon is governed largely by the gradient and rate of flow of the stream and the nature of the stream channel, and tends to reach an equilibrium value of less than one micro-micro Curie per liter. This loss of radon generally occurs as an exponential function with respect to distance of stream flow. The slope of the function varies with different streams. \r\n\r\nThe stream waters investigated contain from one limit of the sensitivity of theinstrument to about 450 micro-micro Curies of radon per liter. The radon content of spring waters is generally higher than that of stream waters. The large radon contents mark the areas of ground water influx into the stream, although, in most cases, no spring activity in these areas was observed. A U.S. Bureau of Mines drill crew, on contract to the Atomic Energy Commission, did 2,450 feet of diamond drilling under the geological supervision of the U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of the drilling was to delineate broadly the favorable ground for commercial development of the uranium deposits. Ten drill holes were located around Pumpkin Point, which is the northeastern end of Buckeye Reef, to probe for extensions of small ore sheets mined on the Point in fine-grained sandstones of the Chinle formation. Three additional holes were located around Tecumseh Hill to probe for extensions of the small showings of uranium-bearing rocks of Buckeye Reef.\r\n\r\nOnly one trace of uranium mineral was detected in the 13 drill holes by logging of drill cores, gamma-ray logging of the holes, and analysis of many core splits from \u001Cfavorable\u001D lithology. Extensive traversing with Geiger counters throughout the district and detailed geologic mapping of areas on Buckeye Reef and on East Reef indicate that the chances of discovering significant uranium deposits in the Silver Reef district are very poor, because of: highly variable lithology, closely faulted structure, and obliteration of the shallow uranium-bearing lenses by silver mining. Most of the available ore in the district was in the Pumpkin Point area and has been mined during 1950 to 1953. No ore reserves can be computed for the district before further development work.
