Records of water levels in limesink ponds in southwestern Georgia and of water‐table levels in the vicinity of these ponds are used to demonstrate: (1) some ponds with highly impermeable beds are virtually unaffected by water‐table levels, except when water‐table levels are above the rim of the impervious materials; (2) interchange of water between pond and water table occurs when beds are relatively permeable. Three phases in the relation between pond level and water‐table level are recognized: (1) water‐table level higher than pond level causing ground‐water flow into the pond; (2) ground‐water level below pond level but in direct contact with it and measurably controlling rate of seepage from the pond; (3) ground‐water level below pond level but not in direct contact with it and not appreciably controlling rate of seepage from the pond. In phase (3) the water table has a perceptible mound at a point underneath the pond.

Another and very important application is shown to be the sampling and study of decomposed bedrock, in regions where outcrops of hardrock are scarce or lacking. This technique was proposed and used by Derby, an American geologist who worked for many years in Brazil. The importance of this method has not been generally recognized, and the writer recalls it to the attention of geologists. An important application is shown to exist in the study of the decomposed bedrock, known as saprolite, that is so widespread in the Piedmont province of the southeastern United States. Using this technique, two projects have already been successfully completed in this region, and the success attained in both sets a new standard for geological exploration and mapping in areas where saprolite constitutes the dominant type of exposure. The technique of panning for heavy and semiheavy accessory minerals is described. Types of pans, factors in panning, the operation of panning, and the processing of concentrates in the field are briefly discussed. The gold pan, in the hands of an experienced operator, is shown to be a versatile and efficient field tool, which is completely independent of laboratory facilities. © 1954 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.

A complete range of arcs of different curvature, within the limits prescribed by the construction of the instrument, are obtainable. This instrument was developed originally to allow accurate construction of circular arcs of very low curvature, which are difficult or impossible to draw with an ordinary compass, in constructing stereographic projections. It is apparent, of course, that numerous other applications are possible. To satisfy the authors' needs, a relatively small model was constructed, but the same general construction could be used in larger models.

The anomalies associated with the Aleutian volcanoes are attributed mainly to topographic relief and are not an indication of the degree of volcanic activity. Eniwetok presents a magnetic pattern that would be produced by an irregular‐shaped rimmed depression in the basement, modified by the two adjoining seamounts, and differs from Bikini, whose magnetic features would be produced by a broad seamount with irregular surface relief. The Bermuda survey demonstrated magnetic features typical of volcanic rocks. Comparison of an observed and a theoretical profile computed by Press and Ewing indicates that their assumptions are reasonably correct. The Aleutian Trench survey shows anomalies that are attributed to susceptibility contrasts but none that can be correlated with the trench. A traverse from Adak, Aleutian Islands, to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, exhibited several large anomalies that are presumed to be caused by susceptibility contrasts but may be indications of uncharted seamounts. Two traverses, one from Cape May, N.J., to Bermuda and the other from Bermuda to Long Island, N.Y., reveal a change in the magnetic field approximately 300 miles from the Atlantic Coast that indicates a possible thinning of the sial and an exposure of sima.

Infections in avian hosts","docAbstract":"An epizoological study of Plasmodium infections in wild birds of Kern County, California, in the years 1946 through 1951 greatly extended knowledge of the occurrence of these parasites and their behavior in nature. Examination of 10,459 blood smears from 8,674 birds representing 73 species resulted in the observation of Plasmodium spp. in 1,094 smears representing 888 individual birds of 27 species. Seven species of Plasmodium were found: relictum, elongatum, hexamerium, nucleophilum, polare, rouxi and vaughani. Plasmodium relictum was by far the most frequently observed species, occurring in at least 79 per cent of the infected birds. Twelve new host species are recorded for this parasite. Sufficient morphological variation was observed to indicate that two strains of this species probably exist in nature. Numerous new host records were made of plasmodia with elongate gametocytes. The finding of parasites believed to be P. rouxi in two new host species represents the first record of the occurrence of this Plasmodium outside of Algeria. Multiple smears were obtained from a number of individual birds over varying time periods. Evidence of prolonged parasitemia was unusual, but some individuals had parasitemia on consecutive months and even for three successive years. In most individuals, parasitemias were of short duration. The inoculation of blood from wild birds into canaries led to the demonstration of many infections not observed on blood smear examination of donors. Use of these two complementary techniques led to more complete host records and a truer picture of the prevalence of infection. Three age classes of birds were studied--nestling, immature (less than 1 year of age) and adult. Parasites were observed in all three groups but infections in the younger individuals were most susceptible to interpretation. As to time of onset, numerous records were obtained of infection in nestling birds. Prevalence rates in immature birds after a single season's exposure ranged from 64 to 100 per cent in the house finch and 17 to 68 per cent in the English sparrow in different areas and years. Marked differences were found in the prevalence rates in different summer months, years and areas. It is believed these differences reflect variation in a number of environmental factors. This study indicates the extensive distribution of Plasmodium infection in a wide range of wild avian hosts. Although some archaeological sites can be dated on the basis of archaeological correlations alone and although dendrochronological (Giddings, 1952, pp. 105-110) and radiocarbon methods give absolute ages for other sites, many sites can be dated only by methods based on the geologists' knowledge of geographic and climatic changes during the last few tens of thousands of years. The dates of these changes are established in part by radiocarbon and related methods. Study of archaeological sites accurately dated by radiocarbon methods will amplify the geologists' understanding of late Quaternary events. The well known techniques of dendrochronological and radiocarbon dating need no discussion. The interrelations of methods that depend ultimately on our knowledge of Quaternary climatic and geographic changes are not always well understood, however, by archaeologists. The present paper is intended to clarify some of these interrelations.
