Lack of success of this exploration suggests that if large deposits, comparable to those of northern Michigan, are present, they are more likely to be found in one or more of the large tracts that have few, if any, exposures, away from the ' copper ranges. ' A hydrologic model that may explain the mineralization of the classic native-copper district of Michigan could be helpful in suggesting that certain covered tracts are more favorable than others, and in narrowing the targets for physical exploration within these tracts. This model involves updip migration of a hydrothermal fluid of metamorphic origin, formed when ground water contained in the interstices of lava flows and conglomerate beds was carried to great depth along the axis of the Lake Superior syncline. The largest reservoirs of such buried ground water would be expected in the peripheral rather than central parts of the basins in which the lavas originally accumulated because the ratio of porous fragmental flow tops and conglomerate beds to massive basalt should increase towards the margins of a basin. Thus, the areas most promising for copper deposits should be those updip from places where the trough of the later formed Lake Superior syncline crosses the marginal parts of a lava basin. Doroshin, a mining engineer employed by the Russian-American Company. He obtained a few ounces of gold from gravels from two streams that flow into the Kenai River below Kenai Lake (Moffit, 1906, p. 8). Placer gold was found on Palmer Creek near Hope in about 1888, and on several nearby creeks in 1894 and 1895, precipitating a rush of miners to the region in 1896 (Moffit, 1906, p. 8, 9, 33). Prospecting subsequently was carried on through the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles, but production of placer gold was confined to the western part of the Seward quadrangle; hence, the map shows only the pertinent area of these quadrangles. Most of the gold was recovered from stream and bench gravels in the western part of the Turnagain Arm drainage system, the most productive gravels from Mills, Canyon, Bear, Resurrection, and Crow Creeks. Only a small amount of gold was recovered from gravels of the Kenai River drainage system, chiefly from Copper Creek, and almost no production was recorded from the Resurrection River or its tributaries. (Resurrection River and Resurrection Creek are two different streams.)

Recovery of the gold was effected initially with sluice boxes and later by hydraulic mining methods (Martin and others, 1915, p. 186). Dredges were installed on Resurrection and Sixmile Creeks but never were operated successfully because of many large boulders, thin gravel deposits, and low gold tenor (Paige and Knopf, 1907, p. 119-120; Brooks, 1916, p. 55; Tuck, 1933, p. 523-527). Dredging also proved unsuccessful on the Kenai River for the same reasons (Martin and others, 1915, p. 186-187).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf880B","isbn":"0607803479","usgsCitation":"Tysdal, R.G., 1978, Map showing placer deposits of the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 880, 2 Plates: 22.38 x 35.64 inches and 33.84 x 27.09 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf880B.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 22.38 x 35.64 inches and 33.84 x 27.09 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":417311,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-B/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":417310,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-B/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":186812,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-B/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Blying Sound Quadrangle, Seward Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -150,59.75 ], [ -150,61 ], [ -147,61 ], [ -147,59.75 ], [ -150,59.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a36bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tysdal, Russell G.","contributorId":1700,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tysdal","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":264982,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It straddles the Laurentian Divide, which separates Hudson Bay and Lake Superior drainage. The topography exhibits a southwesterly trending lineation that parallels the strike of southeastward-dipping bedrock units and the southwestward direction of ice movement during Pleistocene glaciation. For this study, the region has been divided into seven physiographic areas based on geomorphic features related to the bedrock surface, glacial deposits, and hydrogeologic significance.
\n
The surficial geology is largely a result of two southwestward advances of the Rainy Lobe of the Laurentian ice sheet. The Toimi Drumlin Field, the oldest glacial deposit, covers much of the southern part of the region. It is bounded on the north by the Vermilion Moraine Complex, an east-west trending series of terminal and recessional moraines that mark the southerly extent of the second advance of the Rainy Lobe. Thin ground moraine and small outwash deposits occur both within and north of the Vermilion Moraine Complex except in the Embarrass and Dunka River basins where outwash deposits up to 200 feet in thickness fill a deep bedrock valley.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri7851","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Minnesota Environmental Quality Board Copper-Nickel Study Staff","usgsCitation":"Olcott, P.G., and Siegel, D.I., 1978, Physiography and surficial geology of the copper-nickel study region, northeastern Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-51, Document: iv, 22 p.; 3 Plates: 20.99 x 25.11 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7851.","productDescription":"Document: iv, 22 p.; 3 Plates: 20.99 x 25.11 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":424201,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35256.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":95737,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0051/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":95735,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0051/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":95734,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0051/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158311,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0051/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":95736,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0051/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -92.25,\n 47.75\n ],\n [\n -91.916667,\n 47.75\n ],\n [\n -91.75,\n 47.916667\n ],\n [\n -91.5,\n 47.77\n ],\n [\n -91.5,\n 47.5\n ],\n [\n -91.75,\n 47.5\n ],\n [\n -91.75,\n 47.25\n ],\n [\n -92.25,\n 47.25\n ],\n [\n -92.25,\n 47.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685996","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olcott, P. The map is a part of a series of geochemical maps that together with the background information circular (Reiser and others, 1978) comprise the folio on the Chandalar quadrangle, Alaska. The data are plotted on a subdued base map showing the generalized geology, topography, and sample localities. Map symbols showing the ranges of metal values are indicated on the accompanying histograms and all values shown are considered anomalous. An explanation of sampling, preparation, analytical procedures and geochemical raw data for all samples are discussed by O'Leary and others (1976). The -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream sediment medium was used in this study because of the regional setting in the north-central Brooks Range. Given the rather restrictive time and manpower constraints the -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream sediment combined with panned concentrates was determined to be the most economical and adequate medium in this case where clastic sediments are being derived from local bedrock.

The study area is generally one of high relief with short fast-moving streams and broad glacial valleys. All samples were taken from active streams, as close to the center channel as possible. All sediments were considered to be locally derived. Care was taken, when sampling an obviously glaciated terrane, to sample above or upstream from morainal material, wherever possible. Most samples were taken in areas where bedrock was within 30 m of the sample site.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf878D","usgsCitation":"Marsh, S., Detra, D., and Smith, S., 1978, Geochemical and generalized geologic map showing distribution and abundance of molybdenum, copper, and lead in stream sediments in the Chandalar Quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 878, 1 Plate: 43.96 x 35.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf878D.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 43.96 x 35.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":417262,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0878-D/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":182658,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0878-D/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Chandalar Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -150,67 ], [ -150,68 ], [ -147,68 ], [ -147,67 ], [ -150,67 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae83d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marsh, S.P.","contributorId":32913,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marsh","given":"S.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263329,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Detra, D.E.","contributorId":72358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Detra","given":"D.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263330,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, S.C.","contributorId":16833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"S.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263328,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Locations for all samples are given in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Brief descriptions of rock samples are also included. Rocks analysed are mostly sandstone. Samples of hematitic sandstone of the Rose Hill Formation and limonite-cemented sandstone of the Rocky Gap Sandstone contain high values of iron; these rocks are submarginal iron resources. Some of the same iron-rich samples have a little more barium, copper, cobalt, lead, silver, and/or zinc then is in average sandstone, but they do not suggest the presence of economic deposits of these metals. This map shows the distribution and abundance of copper in stream-sediment samples.

Stream-sediment samples were collected at 569 sites from active stream channels and locally, from the interface of streambeds with intermediate- to low-tide beaches. Most of the stream sediment is fine- to coarse-grained sand, with a clay-silt fraction in streams discharging from glaciers.

The stream sediment samples were air dried and sieved through a 80-mesh (0.2 mm) sieve, and the minus-80 mesh fraction was saved for analysis. A split of each sample was analyzed for copper and 15 other elements by a semiquantitative spectrographic method (Grimes and Marranzino, 1968). Other splits were analyzed for gold and zinc by atomic absorption methods (Warren and others, 1969).

Sample sites and copper values (in parts per million) are indicated on the map by symbols identified in the histogram. The weakly anomalous values are considered to be significant only where they were detected in stream-sediment or heavy-mineral concentrate samples that also contained strongly anomalous values of other metals such as arsenic, gold, lead or tungsten.

The map shows two populations for copper in stream sediments. One population consisting of generally lower copper values represents the samples collected from the sedimentary terrane in the central and western parts of the quadrangles. Klinger,
U.S. Bureau of Mines, as part of the field work undertaken by the National Geographic-Smithsonian Pyrotechnological Expedition of 1968. Facilities for the analysis of the samples for tin and other metals were not immediately available, but in 1973 arrangements were made for analyses to be made on a time-permitting basis in the U.S. Geological Survey. The original purpose in collecting the samples was to determine whether tin was present in amounts indicative of sources for tin ores used in antiquity for the manufacture of bronze. The results of the analyses not only permitted an evaluation of the potential for tin in the localities sampled, but also afforded chemical and mineralogical data that were interpretable in the context of regional potential for other elements of current industrial use. These include gold, base metals, ferro-alloy metals, beryllium, rare earths, and barium.

The original 60 samples of sand were sieved to make three size fraction (>0.707 mm, <O.707->O.177 mm, and <0.177 mm) for spectrographic and chemical analysis. Splits of these fractions were used for replicate analyses to permit evaluation of the precision of the analytical procedures. Further splitting of the <0.707->0.177 mm sand gave fractions from each sample that were separated in bromoform. Concentrates from the heavy-liquid separations were divided magnetically into six parts from most magnetic to least magnetic. These concentrates were analyzed spectrographically.

The precision of the spectrographic analyses is well within the limits of precision expected from semiquantitative procedures. Such precision allows semiquantitative spectrographic procedures to be used with confidence as a valuable tool for reconnaissance investigations in which multi-element analyses are necessary.

The analyses of the various fractions of sediments and sediment concentrates indicate the sample media in which an element was most likely to occur. Tin exhibited no preferential concentration into any particular medium. However, many elements with which tin is associated, and other elements of industrial use, do concentrate into one or more of the sample media. This indication of a preferred medium permits interpretation of the analyses as to the best sample medium for a particular element in the environment of western Asia.

Cassiterite and/or tin were detected in many samples from Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, but in most of the samples the tin was present in normal crustal abundance. Sixteen samples, including seven from Afghanistan, eight from Iran, and one from Turkey contain unusually large amounts of tin. The most notable areas of anomalous tin are near Mirzaka, Qala-i-Asad, and Shah Agha in Afghanistan; near Meshed, Shir Kuh, Natanz, Nodus, and Talmesi in Iran; and on the shore of the Balck Sea just west of Trabzon in Turkey. Even in these localities the tin appears to be a minor element associated with other ores. The most common association of tin is with copper at known mineralized areas. This relation may have historical significance in the context of the development of bronze.

The results of the analyses provided geochemical data on the distribution of other elements of industrial use and clearly identified nine of the ten known mineral deposits represented by the samples. The known metallization at the reported deposits may be only a part of more complex groups of metals.

In Afghanistan an array of anomalous elements at the known gold placers around Mirzaka and along the Anguri River signals the presence of complex ore deposits. These elements are silver, arsenic, gold, bismuth, cadmium, copper, mercury, indium, molybdenum, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, tungsten, and zinc. They may indicate a Carlin-type gold deposit in which the wall-rocks are enriched in micron-sized particles of gold. Other localities in Afghanistan signalled by the results of the analyses to be anomalous and to merit further geochemical exploration are: (1) a reach of the Panjshir River for beryllium, lead, zinc, chromium and nickel; (2) the area near Bamian for beryllium; (3) the Siakhak village area for gold and copper; (4) around Qala-i-Asad and Shah Agha for lead, zinc, gold, and tungsten. Some attention to the distribution of monazite around Siakhak, Shahjui, Qala-i-Asad, and Shah Agha is justified to determine if this ore mineral for the rare earths and thorium is enriched over its normally expectable trace as an accessory mineral in granitic rocks, pelitic schists, and gneisses.

In Iran, the pluton of granodiorite porphyry near Sar Cheshmeh, an area where a huge porphyry copper deposit was being investigated by the Geological Survey of Iran when the present samples were collected in 1968, shows as a strong geochemical anomaly for copper and molybdenum.

The granitic area near Meshed is geochemically enriched persistently in beryllium, tin, and barium, and locally in gold, lanthanum, niobium, yttrium, and other elements. This area deserves a thorough regional geochemical survey for beryl and nonberyl sources of beryllium, for fluorite, and for the ores of niobium, tin, barium, the rare earths, and thorium. Other localities in Iran that merit geochemical exploration on the basis of these data are: ;1) the areas between Tabas and Deyhuk, east of Naiband, and south of Naiband for barium and zinc; (2) a locality about midway between Kerman and Sirdjan for barium, lanthanum, strontium, and zinc; (4) the Meskani copper mine area for mercury, lead, and nickel as well as copper; (5) the Talmesi copper mine area for such other elements as barium, cobalt, mercury, strontium, and zinc; (6) a small pluton of granodiorite north of Natanz for tungsten and base metals; (7) the vicinity of Zendjan for auriferous polymetallic sufide deposits; (8) gold in the gorge 15 km east of Miyaneh; and (9) the area near Nodus for gold, base metals, molybdenum, and niobium, and possibly uranium.

The Harsit River basin in Turkey appears to be a suitable target for geochemical exploration for gold and low-temperature hydrothermal deposits of base metals, barium, and mercury.

<br The area lies within the Coronado National Forest and forms a belt around the north, east, and south sides of the Saguaro National Monument (fig. 1). A mineral resource survey was made of the area in 1977 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This study indicates that the potential for finding metallic or nonmetallic mineral deposits, petroleum or coal or geothermal energy in the study area is low. This appraisal is based on geologic and geochemical investigations and on examination of all mineralized prospects. A geologic map was made of the area and its immediate surrounding. Chemical and spectrographic analyses were made of 1.30 stream-sediment samples and of 143 rock samples. The locations of mining claims were compiled and samples from most of the claims were assayed. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the study area.

The geology of the Rincon Mountains is structurally complex. The core of the Rincon Mountains, lying mainly within the Saguaro National Monument, is underlain by igneous and metamorphic rocks chiefly of Precambrian and Tertiary ages. The study area lies on the flanks of the mountains in a terrain of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks mainly of Precambrian through mid-Tertiary age. The rocks of this area are cut by many faults, with low-angle or bedding-parallel faults abundant. the distribution of these faulted rocks around the flanks of the Rincon Mountains is the result of a doming in the core area, the sliding of rock masses from the high part of the dome down its flanks, and to the effects of erosion.

The potential for economic metallic mineral deposits is considered low because the known areas of anomalous concentrations of metals are small and the concentration of metals weak and erratic. The surface signs of mineralization are largely restricted to 4 locales in which some prospects exist (fig. 1): (1) east of Colossal Cave, southwest or the Rincon Mountains, (2) north of Happy Valley, east of the mountains, (3) between Roble and Youtcy Canyons, northeast of the mountains, and (4) near Italian Trap north of the mountains. Very little primary sulfide mineralization is present and signs of alteration are restricted to narrow zones along faults and fractures. The geochemical anomalies are weak. The sites at which anomalous values of copper, molybdenum, or silver were obtained are mainly controlled by faults.

Nonmetallic mineral resources occur in deposits that are too small and too remote to be economically attractive. Sand and gravel deposits in the main drainages are similar to larger deposits that occur closer to nearby highways and cities. Limestone and marble present in some of the metamorphic rocks are too impure and too broken for use as dimension stone. Use of this marble as decorative rock is limited by remote markets. Limestone suitable for making cement is not likely to be found in large quantities within the Rincon wilderness study area. Closely spaced fractures in the granitic rocks makes them of little value for building stone.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78596","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines","usgsCitation":"Thorman, C.H., Drewes, H., and Lane, M., 1978, Mineral resources of the Rincon wilderness study area, Pima County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-596, iii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78596.","productDescription":"iii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413305,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140150,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Pima County","otherGeospatial":"Rincon wilderness study area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e8e4b07f02db5e8f5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thorman, Charles H. cthorman@usgs.gov","contributorId":254,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Thorman","given":"Charles","email":"cthorman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":7065,"text":"USGS emeritus","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":155357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drewes, Harald","contributorId":52567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drewes","given":"Harald","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lane, Michael","contributorId":39756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lane","given":"Michael","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The streams, including Flat, Little Backbone, Spring, West Squaw, Horse, and Zinc Creeks, discharge into Shasta Reservoir and the Sacramento River and have caused numerous fish kills. The sources of pollution are discharge from underground mines, streams that flow into open pits, and streams that flow through pyritic mine dumps where the oxidation of pyrite and other sulfide minerals results in the production of acid and the mobilization of metals. Suggested methods of treatment include the use of air and hydraulic seals in the mines, lime neutralization of mine effluent, channeling of runoff and mine effluent away from mine and tailing areas, and the grading and sealing of mine dumps. A comprehensive preabatement and postabatement program is recommended to evaluate the effects of any treatment method used.
