The falling of rain drops on an unprotected slope, the flow of water across land or in a channel, the borings of a rodent, the expansion of a root, the pull of gravity, the gouging of a glacier, or the impinging of wind on an open surface are some of the forces continually at work in this erosion process. The tendency of these forces is to bring everything to a common level and the moment a point of land or a continent rises above its surroundings, gravity, rain, wind, and all the other forces set to work, bringing it back to the level of its nieghbor. The poetic expression “the everlasting hills” is an illusion, for these erosion forces have been operative since the dawn of geologic history and the evidence is conclusive that in this sequence of time numerous generations of hills and mountain ranges have been uplifted and then razed by erosion, the waste and rock debris of one range forming the source material for its successor. We could not have the great deposits of alluvium and the thick beds of conglomerate, sandstones, and shales that occur at present throughout the Earth without erosion to furnish the source material.

The cone is small and extremely simple in organization. It consists of superposed whorls of twelve bracts each. The bases of the bracts are fused to form shallow cuplike discs. Six sporangia are produced in each whorl; they are erect, each terminating a short, thick, axillary pedicel. Small spores with highly distinctive ornamentation are present in the sporangia.Comparison with other previously described sphenopsid fructifications reveals morphological differences that warrant recognition of the Urbandale specimen as a new genus.

However, weeds also occur on, under, or near water. Fifteen million dollars have been spent on a single aquatic nuisance in the South—the prolific water-hyacinth which clogs navigable streams and lakes with its growth. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have also been expended on control of the waterchestnut or water caltrop in the Potomac River. In addition, smaller-scale local campaigns are continuing against cattails, reeds, giant cutgrass, maidencane, alligatorweed, needlerush, lotus, rose-mallows, willows, alders, buttonbush, and similar weeds that interfere with land use for recreation, irrigation, or other purposes. Since control of marsh and aquatic plants in wildlife habitat is an unfamiliar activity to most weed workers, broad aspects of its what, why, and how will be explained briefly.

Concurrent with the drilling, geologic field work was done to determine the distribution, thickness, and structural setting of the shale. The results of this investigation indicate that the Chattanooga shale in the Sequatchie Valley has a higher uranium content than the shale along the Eastern Highland Rim but is more folded and faulted. For the purposes of these investigations the anticline is roughly divisible into three subequal parts, designated as northern, central, and southern.
\nIn the northern part the Gassaway member of the Chattanoooga shale is 13 to 21 feet thick and probably contains from 0.0060 to 0.0076 percent uranium. An unusual thickness of the phosphatic interval in one core suggests some duplication of strata. Similar deformation could cause erratic distirbution of the more uraniferous beds.
\nIn the central part of the anticline the Dowelltown member of the shale is overlapped by the Gassaway member so that only the latter is present in the central and southern parts of the anticline. The Gassaway is thin and poorly exposed between the State line and Guntersville, Ala., but southward it thickens again to about 40 feet near Blountsville.
\nIn the southern part the uranium content of the shale, as determined from three drill cores, is surprisingly low when compared with analyses of 1952 outcrop samples from three sides of the area. On the basis of available data, 20 feet of shale in the area between hole AL-66, 3 miles southwest of Blountsville, and locality 4G-1 at Blount Springs may contain between 0.0057 and 0.0070 percent uranium, but more drilling would have to be done to check the higher figure, which is based on outcrop samples.
\nData are too sparse to permit reliable estimates of grade and tonnage. More geologic work and drilling are needed to block out the most favorable areas.

This tract lies on the west flank of the Wet Mountains, Custer and Fremont Counties, northeast of Westcliffe, Colo.
\nThe bedrock is a complexly interlayered sequence of gneisses of metasedimetary origin, migmatite and granitic gneisses that have been transected by an albite syenite stock and numerous northwest-trending dikes, veins, and fractures. Hornblende-plagioclase and biotite-quartz-plagioclase gneisses are the principal metasedimentary rocks; pyroxene-scapolite, garnet, sillimanite, and quartzite zones are locally present. The most prominent rock is a poorly foliated, microcline, alaskitic granite gneiss which occurs as layers ranging from more than 500 feet in thickness down to migmatitic “lit-par-lit” type of injections less than an inch thick. Of less wide distribution, but of similar occurrence, are quartz monzonite and leuco-granodiorite gneisses. Although the foliation of the rocks generally is steep and trends northeast over most of the area, several northeast-trending folds have been mapped in the northern half of the area; a vertically plunging fold occurs in the southwest. The albite syenite is nonfoliated and is about 595 million years old (late pre-Cambrian) by the Larsen zircon method of age determination. Many of the dikes are related to the stock.
\nMore than 800 radioactive occurrences were found along the northwest-trending veins. Almost all the radioactivity is due to thorium which in its purest form occurs as a hydrated thorite-like mineral. The veins also contain carbonate minerals, barite, quartz, red and yellow iron oxides, and minor sulfides; no genetic relation of these minerals to the thorium has been established. Although most of the deposits are only weakly radioactive, richer concentrations are scattered as pockets and lenses along the veins.
