Mec, are confined to the lower 2,000 feet of the Sangre de Gristo formation of Pennsylvanian and Permian age. A narrow belt of deposits in steeply dipping or overturned rocks extends for 7 miles along Coyote Creek south of Guadalupita. Earlier studies showed that the copper deposits contained uranium, but both the reserves and the uranium content of the copper-bearing\nshale are too low to permit the recovery of uranium. However, small, commercial grade uranium deposits have been discovered in sandstone. Small lenses of copper-bearing carbonaceous shale, siltstone, limestone or sandstone, interbedded with predominantly red rocks, are present at intervals at 12 or more stratigraphic levels. The better deposits, in carbonaceous shale, average about 2 percent copper. The copper content of the other rocks is usually lower, but small concentrations may contain 6 percent copper. The principal copper minerals are chalcocite and malachite. Chalcocite replaces wood and forms nodules that contain small, variable amounts of pyrite, bornite, covellite, and rarely, uraninite. The uranium deposits occur as small closely spaced pockets that are commonly localized by sedimentary structures within one or more fluviatile arkosic sandstone beds near the middle of the formation, particularly\" where carbonized wood, clay galls, and rock fragments are abundant. The uraniferous sandstone is commonly stained pink by hematite that probably was introduced with the uranium. The color increases in intensity with the radioactivity. The outcrops of the uranium deposits are typically inconspicuous, but close inspection shows they contain malachite, chalcopyrite, black vanadium minerals of micaceous habit, metatyuyamunite and microscopic\ngrains of an unidentified black uraniferous substance. The proportion of copper, uranium, and vanadium is variable and any metal may be dominant. The metals probably were derived from pre-Cambrian granitic rocks. Copper and minor amounts of uranium were deposited in local stagnant basins by reaction with hydrogen sulfide. and decaying organic material. The uraniferous shales and the copper deposits are believed to be syngenetic, or nearly so, but the uranium deposits in sandstone are epigenetic and probably were deposited from ground waters with a possible hydrothermal admixture. The uranium and vanadium may have been\nreconcentrated from earlier, low-grade, syngenetic deposits.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei356","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Tschanz, C., Laub, D., and Fuller, G., 1954, The copper and uranium deposits of the Coyote district, Mora County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 356, Report: 72 p.; Plate 2: 10.93 inches x 21.95 inches; Plate 6: 21.25 inches x 17.23 inches; Plate 8: 23.24 inches x 18.03 inches; Plate 9: 24.22 inches x 19.11 inches; Plate 10: 22.49 inches x 18.28 inches; Plate 12: 18.09 inches x 23.98 inches; Plate 13: 17.43 inches x 17.46 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei356.","productDescription":"Report: 72 p.; Plate 2: 10.93 inches x 21.95 inches; Plate 6: 21.25 inches x 17.23 inches; Plate 8: 23.24 inches x 18.03 inches; Plate 9: 24.22 inches x 19.11 inches; Plate 10: 22.49 inches x 18.28 inches; Plate 12: 18.09 inches x 23.98 inches; Plate 13: 17.43 inches x 17.46 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277745,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279516,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/report.pdf"},{"id":279517,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-02.pdf"},{"id":279518,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-06.pdf"},{"id":279519,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-08.pdf"},{"id":279520,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-09.pdf"},{"id":279521,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-10.pdf"},{"id":279522,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/356/plate-13.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","city":"Mora County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105.720284,35.755951 ], [ -105.720284,36.262924 ], [ -104.327354,36.262924 ], [ -104.327354,35.755951 ], [ -105.720284,35.755951 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523979fce4b04b9308ae4fb1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tschanz, C.M.","contributorId":62659,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tschanz","given":"C.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484029,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laub, D.C.","contributorId":29493,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laub","given":"D.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484028,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fuller, G.W.","contributorId":95540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fuller","given":"G.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484030,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In this area, all the large heavy-mineral placers so far discovered occur in sand bodies that, by their shape, size, orientation, and lithology, appear to be ancient beaches, spits, bars, or dunes. Smaller placers have produced from recent shore-line features. The inner part of the Coastal Plain, to be treated in another report, is underlain generally by older rocks, ranging in age from Cretaceous to older Pleistocene.
\n
\n
Only two large heavy-mineral placers are now in production at Trail Ridge, and near Jacksonville, both in Florida. Production is planned for the near future near Yulee, Fla.: in Folkston, Ga.: and at one or two localities in eastern North Carolina. Each of these three will produce monazite as a byproduct; the total new reserve for the three placers is about 33,000 tons of monazite.
\n
\n
In large heavy-mineral placers of this type, monazite has not been found to run more than about 1 percent of total heavy minerals. In some large placers, notably Trail Ridge, it is almost or completely lacking. No reason for its sporadic occurrence has been found in this investigation.
\n
\n
Two placers of potential economic value have been found by this project in Virginia, one west and one east of Chesapeake Bay. Neither is of promise for monazite production, but if they serve to open up exploration or production in the area, there is a chance for monazite as a byproduct from other placers.
\n
\n
A discovery of considerable scientific interest has to do with the occurrence of two different suites of heavy minerals in the Coastal Plain, at least south of Virginia. One, an “older” suite, lacks epidote, hornblende, and garnet; this suite occurs in all older formations and in Pleistocene deposits lying above about 50 or 60 feet above sea level. The other, “younger” suite contains these three minerals: it is restricted to recent beaches and streams, and to Pleistocene deposits at low altitudes. Monazite may occur with either of these suites.
\n
\n
The percentage of titania (TiO2) in illmenite is of both scientific and economic interest. Illmenite is by far the most sought-for mineral in present exploration, and whether it contains the “normal” 53 percent of titania or, as it commonly does in Florida, 60 percent, is often of decisive importance in its exploitation. The nature, time, and place of this “enrichment” in titania has not been worked out.
\n
\n
The heavy-mineral industry of the area seems to give promise of considerable expansion in the near future, and a greater monazite production seems assured.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei407","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Dryden, L., and Miller, G.A., 1954, Monazite in Atlantic shore-line features: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 407, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei407.","productDescription":"29 p.","numberOfPages":"30","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":284105,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei407.jpg"},{"id":285825,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0407/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida;Maryl;North Carolina;South Carolina;Virginia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -82.87,29.34 ], [ -82.87,39.72 ], [ -75.05,39.72 ], [ -75.05,29.34 ], [ -82.87,29.34 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"535594b6e4b0120853e8c08f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dryden, Lincoln","contributorId":94721,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dryden","given":"Lincoln","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491687,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, Glen A.","contributorId":45216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Glen","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491686,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The geology of these quadrangles was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey for the Atomic Energy Commission as part of a comprehensive study of carnotite deposits. The rocks exposed in the eighteen quadrangles consist of crystalline rocks of pre-Cambrian age and sedimentary rocks that range in age from late Paleozoic to Quaternary. Over much of the area the sedimentary rocks are flat lying, but in places the rocks are disrupted by high-angle faults, and northwest-trending folds. Conspicuous among the folds are large anticlines having cores of intrusive salt and gypsum. Most of the carnotite deposits are confined to the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. Within this sandstone, most of the deposits are spottily distributed through an arcuate zone known as the \"Uravan Mineral Belt\". Individual deposits range in size from irregular masses containing only a few tons of ore to large, tabular masses containing many thousands of tons. The ore consists largely of sandstone selectively impregnated and in part replaced by uranium and vanadium minerals. Most of the deposits appear to the related to certain sedimentary structures in sandstones of favorable composition.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem707","collaboration":"This report concerns work done partly on behald of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Cater, F.W., Butler, A., McKay, E.J., and Boardman, R., 1954, Geology of the Uravan quadrangle, Montrose county, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 707, Report: 25 p.; 1 Plate: 33.72 x 27.75 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem707.","productDescription":"Report: 25 p.; 1 Plate: 33.72 x 27.75 inches","numberOfPages":"27","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278620,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0707/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283344,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0707/report.pdf"},{"id":283343,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0707/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Montrose County","otherGeospatial":"Uravan Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.75,38.25 ], [ -108.75,38.375 ], [ -108.625,38.375 ], [ -108.625,38.25 ], [ -108.75,38.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52737befe4b097f32ac3db51","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cater, Fred W. It supersedes TEI-325. This part lists not only reports (followed by a date) that have been transmitted to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, but also reports in preparation (followed by an asterisk) for which tentative titles were available on December 31, 1953. Reports that have been published are indicated by the abbreviation of the medium of publication. (See also part II.)
\n
\n
Part II is a reference guide to Trace Elements and related reports that are available to the public; this part supersedes Part 2 of the TEI-301 (published as Geological survey Circular 281). These reports are grouped according to the type of publication or release. Abstracts published in Nuclear Science Abstracts are not included in Part II, although certain TEI and TEM reports, the abstracts of which have been published in NSA, are so indicated in Part I. Publications in process on December 31, 1953, are designated by an asterisk.
\n
\n
Part III is a finding list of states, areas, and subjects. It is based on information derived mostly from the titles of reports and, where titles are of a general nature, from a cursory review of the reports. This list is not a complete index of the information given in Trace Elements and related reports, but is designed to find subjects of major interest. Because of the numerous entries for Colorado and Utah, information has been listed by counties and, where possible, by subject under these states. Other states have county listings only if a county is included in the title of a report; otherwise, areas may be listed separately under the state. Major subjects are listed separately in the index and also where appropriate under states. Analytical methods and subjects related to analytical research are listed under Analytical Methods and Research, but not separately throughout the index. Most mineralogic studies are included under the heading Mineralogy, but are not necessarily listed according to location.
\n
\n
Part IV is a finding list of authors. The words “with” and “and” are used to indicate seniority of authorship. For example, a listing of Jones and Brown indicates that Jones is the senior author. A listing of Jones with Brown indicates that Brown is the senior author.
\n
\n
In both parts III and IV all Trace Elements reports are listed, as well as other related reports that have not been issued as Trace Elements reports.
\n
\n
The following standard abbreviations have been used: TEI, Trace Elements Investigations report; TEM, Trace Elements Memorandum report; P, Professional Paper; B, Bulletin; C, Circular; J, Journal; OF, open file; TIS, Technical Information Service release; NSA, Nuclear Science Abstracts; QM, Quadrangle Map Series; and OM, Oil and Gas map or Mineral Investigations map or report.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei400","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Divisions of Raw Materials and Research of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Wallace, J.H., Blatcher, V.K., and Smith, H., 1954, U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements and related reports through 1953: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 400, 267 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei400.","productDescription":"267 p.","numberOfPages":"269","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":284103,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei400.jpg"},{"id":285824,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0400/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"535595d4e4b0120853e8c2ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, Jane H.","contributorId":95119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Jane","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491675,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blatcher, Virginia K.","contributorId":55332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blatcher","given":"Virginia","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491673,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, Harriet B.","contributorId":59097,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Harriet B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491674,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The geology of these quadrangles was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission as part of a comprehensive study of carnotite deposits. The rocks exposed in the eighteen quadrangles consist of crystalline rocks of pre-Cambrian age and sedimentary rocks that range in age from late Paleozoic to Quaternary. Over much of the area the sedimentary rocks are flat lying, but in places the rocks are disrupted by high-angle faults and northwest-trending folds. Conspicuous among the folds are large anticlines having cores of intrusive salt and gypsum. Most of the carnotite deposits are confined to the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. Within this sandstone, most of the deposits are spottily distributed through an arcuate zone known as the \"Uravan mineral belt\". Individual deposits range in size from irregular masses containing only a few tons of ore to large, tabular masses containing many thousands of tons. The ore consists largely of sandstone selectively impregnated and in part replaced by uranium and vanadium minerals. Most of the deposits appear to be related to certain sedimentary in sandstones of favorable composition.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem706","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Shoemaker, E., 1954, Geology of the Roc Creek quadrangle, Montrose county, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 706, Report: 29 p.; 1 Plate: 33.82 x 28.06 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem706.","productDescription":"Report: 29 p.; 1 Plate: 33.82 x 28.06 inches","numberOfPages":"31","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278619,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0706/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283342,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0706/report.pdf"},{"id":283341,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0706/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Montrose County","otherGeospatial":"Roc Creek Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.0,38.375 ], [ -109.0,38.5 ], [ -108.875,38.5 ], [ -108.875,38.375 ], [ -109.0,38.375 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52737befe4b097f32ac3db4c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shoemaker, E.M.","contributorId":81499,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shoemaker","given":"E.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":485527,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The uraniferous lignite occurs at several stratigraphic positions in the Sentinel Butte member of the Fort Union formation of Paleocene age. A total of 261 samples were collected for uranium analysis from 85 localities, Lignite contained as much as 0.045 percent uranium, 10.0 percent ash, and 0.45 percent uranium in the ash was found although the average is lower. Inferred reserves for the four areas examined are estimated to be about 27 million tons of lignite in beds about 2 feet thick and containing more than 3000 tons of uranium. The lignite in beds about 2 feet thick and containing more than 3000 tons of uranium. The lignite averages more than 30 percent ash in the surface samples. The principal factor that seems to influence the uranium content of lignite beds is their stratigraphic position below the overlying rocks of the White River group of Oligocene age. All of the uranium-bearing beds closely underlie the base of the White River group. Although this relationship seems to be the controlling factor, the relative concentration of uranium may be modified by other conditions. Beds enclosed in permeable rocks are more uraniferous than beds in impermeable rocks, and thin beds have higher content of uranium than thick beds. In addition, thick lignite beds commonly have a top=preferential distribution of uranium. These and other factors suggest that the uranium is secondary and this it was introduced by ground water which had leached uranium from volcanic ash in the overlying rocks of the White River group. It is thought that the uranium is held in the lignite as part of a metallo-organic compound.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei463","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Moore, G.W., Melin, R.E., and Kepferle, R.C., 1954, Uranium-bearing lignite in southwestern North Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 463, Report: 35 p.; 1 Plate: 22.82 x 17.92 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei463.","productDescription":"Report: 35 p.; 1 Plate: 22.82 x 17.92 inches","numberOfPages":"36","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":289974,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":289973,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0463/report.pdf"},{"id":289970,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0463/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana;North Dakota;South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Bullion Butte;Chalky Buttes;Ht Butte;Sentinel Butte","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105.0299,44.9987 ], [ -105.0299,47.1933 ], [ -102.3265,47.1933 ], [ -102.3265,44.9987 ], [ -105.0299,44.9987 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae7890e4b0abf75cf2d8ff","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, George W.","contributorId":21625,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495193,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Melin, Robert E.","contributorId":23198,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Melin","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495194,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kepferle, Roy C.","contributorId":103586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kepferle","given":"Roy","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495195,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Most of the carnotite deposits are confined to the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Jurassic Morrison formation, Within this sandstone, most of the deposits are spottily distributed through an arcuate zone known as the \"Uravan Mineral Belt\". Individual deposits range in size from irregular masses containing only a few tons of ore to large, tabular masses containing thousands of tons. The ore consists largely of sandstone selectively impregnated and in part replaced by uranium and vanadium minerals. Most of the deposits appear to be related to certain sedimentary structures in sandstones of favorable composition.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem703","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Withington, C.F., 1954, Geology of the Paradox quadrangle, Montrose county, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 703, Report: 28 p.; 1 Plate: 33.88 x 27.86 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem703.","productDescription":"Report: 28 p.; 1 Plate: 33.88 x 27.86 inches","numberOfPages":"30","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278614,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0703/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283335,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0703/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":283336,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0703/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Montrose County","otherGeospatial":"Paradox Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.0,38.25 ], [ -109.0,38.375 ], [ -108.875,38.375 ], [ -108.875,38.25 ], [ -109.0,38.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52737beee4b097f32ac3db43","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Withington, C. J. was first brought to the attention of the U.S. Geological Survey when Mr. Thomas L. Eak of Avenel, N. J. submitted to the Survey a sample containing 0.068 percent uranium. Subsequent examinations of the area around Clinton indicated that detailed mapping and study were warranted.
\n
\n
The uranium occurrences at Clinton are in or associated with fault zones in the Kittatinny limestone of Cambro-Ordovician age. The limestone generally light gray, thick bedded, and dolomitic; chert is common but not abundant. Regionally and locally, faults are the most significant structural features. The local faults at Clinton are the loci for most of the uranium. The largest fault can be traced for about 700 feet and is radioactive everywhere it crops out. Samples from this fault contain as much as 0.038 percent uranium; the average content is about 0.010 percent uranium. Uranium also occurs disseminated in two 4-inch layers of black feldspathic dolomite and in several zones of residual soil derived from the Kittatinny limestone. The black layers contain as much as 0.046 percent uranium and can be traced only about 20 feet along strike. They are cut by a small fault that is also radioactive. The radioactive soil zones are roughly elongated parallel to bedding. Soil from them contains up to 0.008 percent uranium. The geology of these quadrangles was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey for the Atomic Energy Commission as part of a comprehensive study of carnotite deposits. The rocks exposed in the eighteen quadrangles consist of crystalline rocks of pre-Cambrian age and sedimentary rocks that range in age from late Paleozoic to Quaternary. Over much of the area the sedimentary rocks are flat lying, but in places the rocks are disrupted by high-angle faults and northwest-trending folds. Conspicuous among the folds are large anticlines having cores of intrusive salt and gypsum. Most of the carnotite deposits are confined to the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. Within this sandstone, most of the deposits are spottily distributed through an arcuate zone known as the \"Uravan Mineral Belt\". Individual deposits range in size from irregular masses containing only a few tons of ore ro large, tabular masses containing many thousands of tons. The ore consists largely of sandstone selectively impregnated and in part replaced by uranium and vanadium minerals. Most of the deposits appear to be related to certain sedimentary structures in sandstone of favorable construction.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem701","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Shoemaker, E., 1954, Geology of the Juanita Arch quadrangle, Mesa county, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 701, Report: 35 p.; 1 Plate: 33.76 x 28.14 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem701.","productDescription":"Report: 35 p.; 1 Plate: 33.76 x 28.14 inches","numberOfPages":"37","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278611,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0701/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283331,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0701/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":283332,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0701/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Mesa County","otherGeospatial":"Juanita Arch Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.0,38.5 ], [ -109.0,38.625 ], [ -108.875,38.625 ], [ -108.875,38.5 ], [ -109.0,38.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52737bede4b097f32ac3db3d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shoemaker, Eugene M.","contributorId":59335,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shoemaker","given":"Eugene M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":485520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
