During the period November 13 to December 8, 1950, total precipitation ranged from about 5 inches at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in Nevada to about 30 inches at the crest in California, near the California-Nevada State line. About half of this total occurred during the period November 16-21. The resulting floods were the greatest in more than 50 years of record. The highest discharge occurred on Truckee River where the greatest damage potential exists?in the urban area of Reno and Sparks. \r\n\r\nNotable rates of discharge were 19,900 cfs, or 36.1 cfs per square mile, from 551 square miles in Truckee River at Reno, Nev.; 7,010 cfs, or 212 cfs per square mile, from 33 square miles in Little Truckee River near Hobart Mills, Calif.; and 3,570 cfs, or 119 cfs per square mile, from 30 square miles in East Fork Carson River near Markleeville, Calif. \r\n\r\nThe estimate of damages compiled by the Corps of Engineers total $4,360,000 for the area; $1,982,000 of this was for Reno. Two deaths were reported. The American Red Cross assisted about 200 persons, at an expenditure of about $7,500. Federal aid for city and county rehabilitation in Nevada totaled $75,000. \r\n\r\nThis report contains records of stage and discharge at 20 gaging stations and contents of 2 reservoirs, and a summary of peak discharges at 23 points within or adjacent to the flood area. The report contains also a discussion of the storms and floods, a section on meteorology prepared by the Weather Bureau, and a brief discussion of previous floods.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1137H","usgsCitation":"Wells, J.V., 1954, Floods of November-December 1950 in western Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1137, p. 897-955 :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1137H.","productDescription":"p. 897-955 :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137413,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1137h/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":24688,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1137h/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a252","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, J. S. Geological Survey in October 1951. From June to November 1952, an area of about 750 square miles was examined for uranium deposits, and 211 localities having abnormally high radioactivity were found; uranium minerals are visible at 121 of these localities. \n\nAll known uranium mineralization in the area is restricted to sandstones of the Wasatch formation, except sparsely disseminated uranium in the sandstone of the White River formation, which caps the Pumpkin Buttes, mid several localities on the Great Pine Ridge southwest of the Pumpkin Buttes where iron-saturated sandstone and clinker in the Fort Union formation have above-normal radioactivity. The uranium occurrences in the Wasatch formation are in a red sandstone zone 450 to 900 feet above the base of the formation and are of two types: small concretionary masses of uranium, iron, manganese and vanadium minerals in sandstone, and irregular zones in which uranium minerals are disseminated in sandstone. The second type is usually larger but of lower grade than the first.\n\nMost of the localities at which uranium occurs are in a north-trending belt about 60 miles long and 18 miles in maximum width.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir338","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the U. The stripping-coal reserves are located in the lower and middle members of the Tertiary coal-bearing formation. Five continuous beds in the middle member range in thickness from 5 to 30 feet, and a discontinuous bed at the base of the lower member is about 60 feet thick. Analyses of outcrop samples, as received at the laboratory, show a heating content of 7,500--8,200 Btu, an ash content of 6 to 14 percent, and a moisture content of 25 percent. The reserve estimate is based on a maximum thickness of overburden of 200 feet. Coal below the level of Lignite Creek or its major tributaries was not considered as it was assumed that stripping would be by hydraulic methods. Uncertainties regarding the position of the coal outcrops and the extent of burning of the coal beds are the basis for a recommendation that, where possible, the stripping reserves be tested by drilling. \r\n\r\nOverburden consists largely of weakly consolidated sandstone and includes some coarse gravel and a few boulders 20 feet or more in diameter. Water for hydraulic mining can be obtained from the Nenana River. Lignite Creek does not appear to be a dependable source. Disposal of debris may affect the channel of the Nenana River causing damage to railroads and structures. Landslides are common in the valley of Lignite Creek and will affect mining operations and transportation routes.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir310","usgsCitation":"Wahrhaftig, C., and Birman, J.H., 1954, Stripping-coal deposits on lower Lignite Creek, Nenana coal field, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 310, iv, 11 p. :ill., maps (5 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir310.","productDescription":"iv, 11 p. :ill., maps (5 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":109916,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23775.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"23775"},{"id":124692,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0310/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30319,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0310/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4b60","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wahrhaftig, Clyde","contributorId":102473,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wahrhaftig","given":"Clyde","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146647,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Birman, Joseph H.","contributorId":37196,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Birman","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146646,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Also tested were metamorphic and sedimentary rocks of pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic age crossed by the Elliott Highway, which extends from Fox, near Fairbanks, northwestward about 70 miles to the town of Livengood. Nuggets consisting chiefly of native bismuth and containing as much as 0.1 percent equivalent uranium had been found previously in a placer on Fish Creek several miles downstream from the reported bismuth-bearing lode on Melba Creek, but none of the lodes tested in 1949 exhibited radioactivity in excess of 0. 003 percent equivalent uranium. The greatest radioactivity found in the rocks along the Elliott Highway was in an iron-stained pre-Cambrian schist and in a carbonaceous(?) shale of Middle Devonian or Carboniferous age. Respective samples of these rocks contain 0. 003 and 0.004 percent equivalent uranium. A possible local bedrock source for the euxenite-polycrase mineral found in a placer concentrate containing about 0.04 percent equivalent uranium was sought in the watershed of Goodluck Creek, near Livengood. The bedrock source of this mineral could not be located and it is believed that the source could be outside of the Goodluck watershed because drainage changes during Quaternary time may well have introduced gravels from nearby areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/cir335","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., and White, M., 1954, Reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in east-central Alaska, 1949: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 335, iii, 22 p. :maps (2 fold. in pocket) tables. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir335.","productDescription":"iii, 22 p. :maps (2 fold. in pocket) tables. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124536,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0335/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30295,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1954/0335/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683a8e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth","contributorId":67495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, M.G.","contributorId":52953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"M.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146623,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Exposed sedimentary rocks range in age from the Halgaito tongue of the Cutler\nformation (Permian) to the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation (Jurassic), The dominant structural element of the area is the Monument upwarp, a arge asymmetrical anticline whose northern end is near the junction of the Green and Colorado Rivers in Utah, and whose southern end disappears near Kayenta, Ariz. Asymmetrical anticlines with steeply dipping east flanks and gently dipping west flanks are superimposed on the upwarp. These subsidiary structures trend north. The uranium ore bodies are localized in conglomeratic sandstone of the Upper Triassic Shinarump conglomerate that fills channels scoured in the underlying Lower and Middle (?) Triassic Moenkopi formation. These channels range from relatively narrow and shallow ones 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep to much broader and deeper ones 2,300 feet wide and 70 feet deep. Two types of channels can be distinguished-r-a short-type less than 2 miles Iong 5 and a long-type traceable for distances greater than 2 miles Plant matter in the form of trees, branches,'and twigs was deposited with Shinarump sediments in the channels. It is suggested that when the Shinarump conglomerate was invaded by mineralizing solutions the uranium ore was deposited primarily in localities formerly occupied by the plant material. Further, it is suggested that the short channels are more likely to have ore accumulations than long channels.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei340","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Witkind, I.J., 1954, Localization of uranium minerals in channel sediments at the base of the Shinarump conglomerate, Monument Valley, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 340, Report: 43 p.; 2 Plates: 29.10 x 17.55 inches and 22.02 x 19.71 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei340.","productDescription":"Report: 43 p.; 2 Plates: 29.10 x 17.55 inches and 22.02 x 19.71 inches","numberOfPages":"43","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277456,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/340/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":285789,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/figure-5.pdf"},{"id":285790,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/figure-8.pdf"},{"id":285791,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0340/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Apache County","otherGeospatial":"Monument Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110.489502,36.658505 ], [ -110.489502,37.262031 ], [ -109.677887,37.262031 ], [ -109.677887,36.658505 ], [ -110.489502,36.658505 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52303f64e4b04b8e63a20647","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Witkind, I. The district is composed largely of pre-Jurassic metamorphic and igneous rocks, which are chiefly if not entirely pre-Cambrian in age. The metamorphic and igneous rocks are overlain by sandstone of the Morrison formation of Jurassic age, and by volcanic rocks of the Alboroto group and Hinsdale formation of Miocene and Pliocene (?) age, respectively.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The thorium deposits occur in or near alkalic igneous rocks in which such elements as titanium, rare earths, barium, strontium, and niobium occur in greater-than-average amounts. The greatest mass of the alkalic igneous rocks the Iron Hill composite stoc,- occupies an area of 12 square miles in the southeastern part of the district. The age of the thorium deposits, like that of the alkalic igneous rocks, is not known other than pre-Jurassic.</p> \n<br>\n<p>The thorium veins and mineralized shear zones range from a few inches to 18 feet in thickness and from a few feet to 3,500 feet in length. The veins are composed of calcite,.dolomite, siderite, ankerite, quartz, barite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, goethite,. apatite, alkali feldspar, and many other minerals. The thorium occurs at least partly in thorite or hydrothorite. Sparse xenotime has been tentatively identified in one deposit. Several minerals containing rare earths of the cerium group as major constituents are found in carbonate veins near Iron Hill. Bastnaesite has been identified by X-ray methods, and cerite and synchisite are probably present also.The fluorapatite in some veins and in parts of the carbonate rock mass that occupies 2 square miles in the central part of the Iron Hill complex contains rare earths of the cerium group, generally in amounts of a fraction of a percent of the rock.</p> \n<br>\n<p>The radioactivity of the deposits appears to be due almost entirely to thorium and its daughter products The ThO<sub>2</sub> content of selected highgrade samples from the Little Johnnie vein is as much as 4 percent. The ThO<sub>2</sub> content of the veins is generally less than 1 percent, however, and is only 0.05 to 0.1 percent in many of the veins studied.</p> \n<br>\n<p>The little Johnnie vein, which was mapped in detail, can be traced discontinuously for a distance of more than 3,500 feet. The thoriumbearing material occurs as irregular veinlets and thin films introduced into the fault zone. The mineralized shear zone ranges from less than 6 inches to 5 feet in thickness. Near its west end the vein is broken by many faults in a zone that marks the edge of a roughly circular fault block, 1<sub>1/2.</sub>miles in diameter, that has dropped 1,000 feet or more since the deposition of Miocene volcanic-rocks that now floor the Milkranch basin.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei353","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Olson, J.C., and Wallace, S., 1954, Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 353, Report: 58 p.; 2 Plates: 20.93 x 11.91 inches and 9.29 x 11.96 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei353.","productDescription":"Report: 58 p.; 2 Plates: 20.93 x 11.91 inches and 9.29 x 11.96 inches","numberOfPages":"58","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288854,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288851,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/figure-2.pdf"},{"id":288852,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/figure-3.pdf"},{"id":288853,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0353/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Gunnison County","otherGeospatial":"Powderhorn District","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.0603,36.9924 ], [ -109.0603,41.0024 ], [ -102.0416,41.0024 ], [ -102.0416,36.9924 ], [ -109.0603,36.9924 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523979fde4b04b9308ae4fbc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olson, Jerry C.","contributorId":89202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Olson","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wallace, Stewart R.","contributorId":53371,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wallace","given":"Stewart R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484021,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
