One near Harrisburg was penetrated by a diamond-drill. Drill core specimens show a gradation from diabase to granophyre.

New data include 10 chemical analyses, spectrographic determinations of trace elements, and the results of petrographic study of specimens from the drill core. The sequence, from diabase to granophyre, includes a chilled zone that represents an original magma of tholeiitic composition, normal diabase, pegmatitic facies of diabase, and granophyric diabase that is intermediate in composition and petrographic characteristics between diabase and granophyre, and finally granophyre. Alkalies and silica increase progressively from diabase to granophyre; iron increases to a maximum in transitional granophyric diabase, then decreases in the granophyre.

It is concluded that crystal fractionation in a large sheetlike body of tholeiitic magma yielded a small amount of granophyre. Prior to complete solidification, a residual liquid rich in iron, alkalies, and silica accumulated locally in the upper part of the diabase sheet. In places volatile-rich iron-bearing solutions escaped into the overlying sedimentary rocks and deposited magnetite; the remaining liquid crystallized t o fine-grained granophyre.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1953)64[675:POGIDN]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Hotz, P.E., 1953, Petrology of granophyre in diabase near Dillsburg, Pennsylvania: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 64, no. 6, p. 675-704, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1953)64[675:POGIDN]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"30 p.","startPage":"675","endPage":"704","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386616,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Dillsburg","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.04900741577148,\n              40.107881296903194\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.02720642089844,\n              40.107881296903194\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.02720642089844,\n              40.12100925481713\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.04900741577148,\n              40.12100925481713\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.04900741577148,\n              40.107881296903194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hotz, Preston E.","contributorId":37083,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hotz","given":"Preston","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":817924,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Since the weight of pyroclastic material and lava erupted by Parícutin in the spring and summer of 1945 is estimated to have averaged about 1.2 million metric tons a day, the water expelled at that time amounted to about 1.1 pct of the total weight of material erupted. Although these data will not be fully analyzed for several years, segments of the data, accompanied by little or no interpretation, are published as preliminary reports as they are assembled. This report, which contains abstracts of the sections measured in northeastern Utah in 1949, 1950, and 1951, is one of this series and the second report of data gathered in Utah. The field and laboratory procedures adopted in these investigations are described rather fully in a previous report (McKelvey and others, 1953a).
\n
\n
Many people have taken part in this investigation. The program which this work is a part was organized by V. E. McKelvey and the field program was supervised by R. W. Swanson. R. P. Sheldon assisted in the location and selection of sample localities and F. J. Anderson, McKelvey, Sheldon, and H. W. Peirce participated in the description of strata and the collection of samples referred to in this report. T. K. Rigby assisted in the preparation of trenches and the crushing and splitting of samples in the field. These data will not be fully synthesized and analyzed for several years, but segments of the data, accompanied by little or no interpretation, are published as preliminary reports as they are assembled. This report, which contains abstracts of many of the sections in southwestern Montana (fig. 1), is one of this series and is the fourth Montana report; it includes the second half of the data gathered in Montana during 1949 and 1950. The field and laboratory procedures adopted in these investigations are described rather fully in a previous report (McKelvey and others, 1953).
\n
\n
Many people have taken part in this investigation. A study was made of the geology of the Shinarump No. 1 mine in order to determine the habits, ore controls, and possible origin of the deposit.
\n
\n
Rocks of Permain, Triassic, and Jurassic age crop out in the area mapped. Uranium deposits are found in three zones in the lower 25 feet of the Upper Triassic Chinle formation. The Shinarump No. 1 mine, which is in the lowermost zone, is located on the west flank of the Moab anticline near the Moab fault.
\n
\n
The Shinarump No. 1 uranium deposit consists of discontinuous lenticular layers of mineralized rock, irregular in outline, that, in general, follow the bedding. Ore minerals, mainly uranite, impregnate the rock. High-grade seams of uranite and chalcocite occur along bedding planes. Formation of unraninite is later than or simultaneous with most sulfides. Chalcocite may be of two ages, with some being later than uraninite. Uraninite and chalcocite are concentrated in the poorer sorted parts of siltstones. Guides to ore in the Seven Mile Canyon area inferred from the study of the Shinarump No. 1 deposit are the presence of bleached siltstone, copper sulfides, and carbonaceous matter. Results of spectrographic analysis indicated that the mineralizing solutions contained important amounts of barium, vanadium, uranium, and copper as well as lesser amounts of strontium, chromium, boron, yttrium, lead, and zinc.
\n
\n
The origin of the Shinarump No. 1 deposit is thought to be hydrothermal, dated as later or early.
","language":"English","doi":"10.3133/tei287","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Finch, W.I., 1953, Geology of the Shinarump No. 1 uranium mine, Seven Mile Canyon area, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 287, Report: 36 p.; Plate 1: 27.87 x 20.69 inches; Plate 2: 20.84 x 15.99 inches; Plate 3: 14.74 x 10.34 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei287.","productDescription":"Report: 36 p.; Plate 1: 27.87 x 20.69 inches; Plate 2: 20.84 x 15.99 inches; Plate 3: 14.74 x 10.34 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":283434,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei287.PNG"},{"id":284525,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0287/figure-2.pdf"},{"id":284526,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0287/figure-8.pdf"},{"id":284527,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0287/figure-9.pdf"},{"id":284528,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0287/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Grand County","otherGeospatial":"Seven Mile Canyon Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110.1793,38.5 ], [ -110.1793,39.4998 ], [ -109.0508,39.4998 ], [ -109.0508,38.5 ], [ -110.1793,38.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd5e6be4b0b290850fbaff","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finch, Warren Irvin","contributorId":55794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Finch","given":"Warren","email":"","middleInitial":"Irvin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284010,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
