The veins occupy extensive faults of Laramide age but normally contain pitchblende only where the cut hornblende gneiss. At the Union Pacific prospect, which was studied in detail, pitchblende, hermatite, and some ankerite formed in advance of sulfides, except possibly for minor pyrite. Base-metal sulfides and the bulk of ankerite-calcite vein-filling were deposited after the pitchblende. Chemical analyses show a high ferrous iron content in the hornblende gneiss in contrast to low ferrous iron in the adjacent biotite gneiss. It is hypothesized that ferrous iron released by alteration of hornblende was partly oxidized to hematite by the ore-bearing solutions and, contemporaneously, uranium was reduced and deposited as pitchblende.
\n
\n
In other veins, biotite or iron sulfides may have been similarly effective in precipitating pitchblende. Apparently both the ferrous ion and the sulfide ion can serve as reducing agents and control pitchblende deposition. It is suggested that conditions particularly favorable for uranium deposition are present where uranium-bearing solutions had access to rocks rich in ferrous iron or pre-existing sulfides.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei430","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Adams, J.W., and Stugard, F., 1954, Wall-rock control of cortain pitchblende deposits in Golden Gate Canyon, Jefferson County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 430, Report: 34 p.; 1 Plate: 16.80 x 22.37 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei430.","productDescription":"Report: 34 p.; 1 Plate: 16.80 x 22.37 inches","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":284138,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei430.jpg"},{"id":285839,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0430/figure-3.pdf"},{"id":285840,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0430/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Jefferson County","otherGeospatial":"Golden Gate Canyon","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -106.0,39.0 ], [ -106.0,40.0 ], [ -105.0,40.0 ], [ -105.0,39.0 ], [ -106.0,39.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"535595dae4b0120853e8c2ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Adams, John W.","contributorId":76226,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Adams","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284223,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stugard, Frederick Jr.","contributorId":88373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stugard","given":"Frederick","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284224,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Production is from high-grade uranium deposits in the Shinarump conglomerate of the Triassic age. In this area the Shinarump beds range from about 16 to 40 feet in thickness and the lower part of these beds fills an east-trending channel this is note than 750 feet wide and 10 feet deep. The Shinarump conglomerate consists of beds of coarse- to fine-grained quartzose sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and claystone. Carbonized wood is abundant in these beds, and in the field it was classified as mineral charcoal and coal. Intra-Shinarump channels, cross-stratification, current lineation, and slumping and compaction structures have been recognized in the mine. Steeply dipping fractures have dominant trends in four directions -- N 65°W, N 60°E, N 85°E, and due north. Uranium occurs as bedded deposits, as replacement bodies in accumulations of \"trash\", and as replacements of larger fragments of wood. An \"ore shoot\" is formed where the three types of uranium deposits occur together; these ore shoots appear to be elongate masses with sharp boundaries. Uranium minerals include uraninite, sooty pitchblende(?), and the sulfate--betazippeite, johannite, and uranopilite. Associated with the uraninite are the sulfide minerals covellite, bornite, chalcopyritw, and pyrite. Galena and sphalerite have been found in close association with uranium minerals. The gaunge minerals include: limonite and hematite present in most of the sandstone beds throughout the deposit, jarosite that impregnates much of the sandstone in the outer parts of the mine workings, gypsum that fills many of the fractures, and barite that impregnates the sandstone in at least one part of the mine. Secondary copper minerals, mainly copper sulfates, occur throughout the mine, but most abundant near the adits in the outermost 30 feet of the workings. The minerals comprising the bulk of the country rock include quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals. The amount of uranium minerals deposited in a sandstone bed is believed to have been determined by the position of the bed in the channel, the permeability of the sandstone in the bed, and the amount of carbonized wood and plant remains within the bed. The beds considered most favorable for uranium deposition contain an abundance of claystone and siltstone both as matrix filling and as fragments and pebbles. Suggested exploration guides from uranium ore bodies include the following: (1) interbedded siltstone lenses, (2) claystone and siltstone cement and pabbles, (3) concentrations of \"trash\", (4) covelllite and bornite, (5) chalcopyrite, and (6) carbonized wood.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem645","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Trites, A.F., and Chew, R.T., 1954, Progress report on the Happy Jack mine, Which Canyon area, San Juan county, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 645, Report: 20 p.; 2 Plates: 14.86 x 23.81 inches and 14.98 x 23.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem645.","productDescription":"Report: 20 p.; 2 Plates: 14.86 x 23.81 inches and 14.98 x 23.95 inches","numberOfPages":"22","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278413,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0645/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283299,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0645/plate-3.pdf"},{"id":283300,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0645/plate-4.pdf"},{"id":283298,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0645/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"San Juan County","otherGeospatial":"Happy Jack Mine","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110.307082,37.74534 ], [ -110.307082,37.761595 ], [ -110.285524,37.761595 ], [ -110.285524,37.74534 ], [ -110.307082,37.74534 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"526b9309e4b058918d0acc32","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Trites, Albert F. Meteoric water percolating through tuffaceous rocks is thought to have brought uranium and other ions into environments in the Chadron formation that were physically and chemically favorable for the deposition of carnotite.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei411","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Gill, J.R., and Moore, G.W., 1954, Carnotite-bearing sandstone in Cedar Canyon, Slim Buttes, Harding County, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 411, Report: 33 p.; 1 Plate: 22.14 x 18.30 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei411.","productDescription":"Report: 33 p.; 1 Plate: 22.14 x 18.30 inches","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":284126,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei411.jpg"},{"id":285827,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0411/figure-2.pdf"},{"id":285828,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0411/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","county":"Harding County","otherGeospatial":"Cedar Canyon;Slim Buttes","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.5923,45.2124 ], [ -103.5923,45.6024 ], [ -102.9425,45.6024 ], [ -102.9425,45.2124 ], [ -103.5923,45.2124 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53558ff9e4b0120853e8be71","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gill, James R.","contributorId":44904,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gill","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, George W.","contributorId":21625,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

It was found that the spectrophotometric determination of uric acid based upon its reaction with arsenophosphotungstic acid reagent in the presence of cyanide ion meets this objective. The absorbancy of the blue complex was measured at 890 mμ. Slight variations from Beer's law were generally found. The results show the effects of pH, reaction time, concentration of reagents, and temperature upon color development and precipitate formation. Disodium dihydrogen ethylenediamine tetraacetate (Versene) was used as a buffering and complexirig agent. This ratio is far higher than seems likely if the sial had been entirely derived through fractional crystallization of a basaltic magma. The relative paucity of intermediate rocks as compared with granite and gabbro in the crust points in the same direction. It is important to know whether the concentrations of such solutions remain constant from day to day. The stability of dilute solutions of three metallic ions-uranium, lead, and thorium-has been investigated. Solutions containing concentrations of metallic ions, ranging from 1000 to 0.1 γ per milliliter, were allowed to stand for approximately 2.5 months, and then the metallic ion content of those solutions that had lost strength was determined. Both adsorption and hydrolysis variously influenced the solute loss, but the minimum pH at which loss of concentration of lead and uranium occurred seemed to coincide with the pH at which the hydrolyzed metal ions began to precipitate. No increase in the stability of the solutions was obtained by substituting polyethylene containers for borosilicate glass. The solutions that lost strength could not be restored promptly to the original concentration by manual means, such as shaking them vigorously for several minutes.
","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60095a033","usgsCitation":"Milkey, R., 1954, Stability of dilute solutions of uranium, lead, and thorium ions: Analytical Chemistry, v. 26, no. 11, p. 1800-1803, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60095a033.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1800","endPage":"1803","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220815,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9651e4b08c986b31b42c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Milkey, R.G.","contributorId":89125,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milkey","given":"R.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The analytical curve for Th II 2870.413 Å/Zr II 2844-579 Å is established by means of synthetic standards containing graduated amounts of thoria and 0.500 per cent zirconia in pegmatite base (60 parts quartz, 40 parts microchne, and 1 part ferric oxide). Monazite samples are diluted 14-fold with pegmatite base that contains 0.538 per cent ZrO2, so that the zirconia content of the resulting mixture is also 0.500 per cent. In addition, both the standards and the diluted monazites are mixed with one-half their weight of powdered graphite.

Approximately 25 mg of the prepared samples are arced to completion at 15.5 to 17.5 amperes. With the 14-fold dilution employed, the accurate range of the method is 3 to 20 per cent thoria in the original monazite. The coefficient of variation for a single determination is 4 per cent at the 7 per cent thoria level. Tests with synthetic unknowns and chemically analyzed monazites show a maximum error of ±10 per cent of the thoria content.

If niobium is substituted for zirconium as the internal standard, there is a loss of precision. Platinum as the internal standard gives results of good precision but introduces a marked sensitivity to matrix effects.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0371-1951(54)80020-8","issn":"03711951","usgsCitation":"Dutra, C.V., and Murata, K.J., 1954, Spectrochemical determination of thorium in monazite by the powder-d.c. arc technique: Spectrochimica Acta, v. 6, no. 5-6, p. 373-382, https://doi.org/10.1016/0371-1951(54)80020-8.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"373","endPage":"382","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219040,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","issue":"5-6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b954ee4b08c986b31ae7b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dutra, C. Analytical expressions for each type of star from each of the significantly contributing members of the uranium and thorium series as well as summation formulas for the whole series have been computed. The analysis for thorium may be made by determining the abundance of five-branched stars in a loaded nuclear emulsion and comparing of observed and predicted star populations.
