The results of this study indicate that if information on the incidence of sea lamprey scars on white suckers is to be used to judge the relative abundance of sea lampreys and the damages inflicted by that parasite on the sucker stock, data must include records of the lengths of fish. It was found that the spectrophotometric determination of uric acid based upon its reaction with arsenophosphotungstic acid reagent in the presence of cyanide ion meets this objective. The absorbancy of the blue complex was measured at 890 mμ. Slight variations from Beer's law were generally found. The results show the effects of pH, reaction time, concentration of reagents, and temperature upon color development and precipitate formation. Disodium dihydrogen ethylenediamine tetraacetate (Versene) was used as a buffering and complexirig agent. The results are significant in that they give the absorption spectrum of the blue complex and the effects of variables upon its absorbancy. Studies were made with the method to determine the stability of reagents and standard solutions and to determine the rate of bacterial decomposition of uric acid. It seems that sial of the composition of the average igneous rock constitutes fully 26% and perhaps as much as 43% of the total crust. This ratio is far higher than seems likely if the sial had been entirely derived through fractional crystallization of a basaltic magma. The relative paucity of intermediate rocks as compared with granite and gabbro in the crust points in the same direction. The tentative conclusion is reached that the sial owes a large part of its volume to some process other than fractional crystallization of basalt—possibly to the emanation of low-melting constituents such as water, silica, potassa, soda, and alumina directly from the mantle to the crust.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springerlink","doi":"10.1007/BF01140407","usgsCitation":"Gilluly, J., 1954, Composition of the continental plates: Tschermaks Mineralogische und Petrographische Mitteilungen, v. 4, no. 1-4, p. 360-369, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01140407.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"360","endPage":"369","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220876,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","issue":"1-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f92de4b0c8380cd4d4a2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gilluly, J.","contributorId":93193,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gilluly","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360165,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is important to know whether the concentrations of such solutions remain constant from day to day. The stability of dilute solutions of three metallic ions-uranium, lead, and thorium-has been investigated. Solutions containing concentrations of metallic ions, ranging from 1000 to 0.1 γ per milliliter, were allowed to stand for approximately 2.5 months, and then the metallic ion content of those solutions that had lost strength was determined. Both adsorption and hydrolysis variously influenced the solute loss, but the minimum pH at which loss of concentration of lead and uranium occurred seemed to coincide with the pH at which the hydrolyzed metal ions began to precipitate. No increase in the stability of the solutions was obtained by substituting polyethylene containers for borosilicate glass. The solutions that lost strength could not be restored promptly to the original concentration by manual means, such as shaking them vigorously for several minutes.
","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60095a033","usgsCitation":"Milkey, R., 1954, Stability of dilute solutions of uranium, lead, and thorium ions: Analytical Chemistry, v. 26, no. 11, p. 1800-1803, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60095a033.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1800","endPage":"1803","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220815,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9651e4b08c986b31b42c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Milkey, R.G.","contributorId":89125,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Milkey","given":"R.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The effects of electron scattering and energy loss in the target preclude any simple interpretation of this data to yield a differential bremsstrahlung cross section. However, an estimate of the spectra to be expected at 0° and 90° was obtained by combining the Sauter expression for the bremsstrahlung cross section with the available information on electron scatter and energy loss in the target and backscatter from the target. The reliability of the estimate is limited because the Sauter formula was calculated by using the Born approximation, the electron scattering calculations are applicable to an infinite medium only, and the backscatter was estimated empirically from Bothe's experimental data which were obtained with lower energy electrons (370 kev). Furthermore electron energy straggling was neglected. Nevertheless, the predicted spectral shapes at 0° and 90° and the relative intensities at these two angles are in qualitative agreement with the measured values. The absolute magnitudes of the measured intensities at both angles are about a factor of two greater than the predicted values.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Physical Society","doi":"10.1103/PhysRev.96.1344","usgsCitation":"Miller, W., Motz, J.W., and Cialella, C., 1954, Thick target bremsstrahlung spectra for 1.00-, 1.25-, and 1.40-Mev electrons: Physical Review, v. 96, no. 5, p. 1344-1350, https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRev.96.1344.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1344","endPage":"1350","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218752,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"96","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1954-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb296e4b08c986b3258d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, W.","contributorId":93184,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Motz, J. A new polarographic wave of tungsten is obtained in a supporting electrolyte of dilute hydrochloric acid containing tartrate ion. This permits the determination of tungsten both rapidly and accurately. No precipitation of the tungsten is necessary, and only the iron need be separated from the tungsten. The accuracy is within the limits of a polarographic procedure; comparison of polarographic and gravimetric results is given. The method reduces appreciably the amount of time ordinarily consumed in determination of tungsten.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Analytical Chemistry","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"00032700","usgsCitation":"Reichen, L., 1954, Polarographic determination of tungsten in rocks: Analytical Chemistry, v. 26, no. 8, p. 1302-1304.","startPage":"1302","endPage":"1304","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7cc8e4b0c8380cd79b96","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reichen, L.E.","contributorId":58389,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reichen","given":"L.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":359069,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The analytical curve for Th II 2870.413 Å/Zr II 2844-579 Å is established by means of synthetic standards containing graduated amounts of thoria and 0.500 per cent zirconia in pegmatite base (60 parts quartz, 40 parts microchne, and 1 part ferric oxide). Monazite samples are diluted 14-fold with pegmatite base that contains 0.538 per cent ZrO2, so that the zirconia content of the resulting mixture is also 0.500 per cent. In addition, both the standards and the diluted monazites are mixed with one-half their weight of powdered graphite.

Approximately 25 mg of the prepared samples are arced to completion at 15.5 to 17.5 amperes. With the 14-fold dilution employed, the accurate range of the method is 3 to 20 per cent thoria in the original monazite. The coefficient of variation for a single determination is 4 per cent at the 7 per cent thoria level. Tests with synthetic unknowns and chemically analyzed monazites show a maximum error of ±10 per cent of the thoria content.

If niobium is substituted for zirconium as the internal standard, there is a loss of precision. Platinum as the internal standard gives results of good precision but introduces a marked sensitivity to matrix effects.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0371-1951(54)80020-8","issn":"03711951","usgsCitation":"Dutra, C.V., and Murata, K.J., 1954, Spectrochemical determination of thorium in monazite by the powder-d.c. arc technique: Spectrochimica Acta, v. 6, no. 5-6, p. 373-382, https://doi.org/10.1016/0371-1951(54)80020-8.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"373","endPage":"382","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219040,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","issue":"5-6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b954ee4b08c986b31ae7b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dutra, C.
