To date, approximately 75 square miles, or about 20 percent of the area, has been mapped on a scale 1 inch=1 mile.\n\nThe White Canyon area is underlain by more than 2,000 feet of sedimentary rocks, Carboniferous to Jurassic(?) in age. The area is on the flank of the Elk Ridge anticline, and the strata have a regional dip of 1 deg to 2 deg SW.\n\nThe Shinarump conglomerate of Late Triassic age is the principal ore-bearing formation. The Shinarump consists of lenticular beds of sandstone, conglomeratic sandstone, clay, and siltstone, and ranges in thickness from a feather edge to as much as 75 feet. Locally the sandstones contain silicified and carbonized wood and fragments of charcoal. These vegetal remains are especially common in channel-fill deposits.\n\nJointing is prominent in the western part of the area, and apparently affects all formations. Adjacent to the joints some of the redbeds in the sequence are bleached.\n\nDeposits of copper-uranium minerals have been found in the Moenkopi, Shinarump, and Chinle formations, but the only production of ore has been from the Shinarump conglomerate. The largest concentration of these minerals is in the lower third of the Shinarump, and the deposits seem to be controlled in part by ancient channel fills and in part by fractures. Locally precipitation of the copper and uranium minerals apparently has been aided by charcoal and clays.\n\nVisible uranium minerals include both hard and soft pitchblende and secondary hydrosulfates, phosphates, and silicates. In addition, unidentified uranium compounds are present in carbonized wood and charcoal, and in veinlets of hydrocarbons. Base-metal sulfides have been identified in all prospects that extend beyond the oxidized zone. Secondary copper minerals in the oxidized zone include the hydrous sulfates and carbonates, and possibly chrysocolla. In the late summer, after the snow has melted from these mountains, the flow in the Green River reaches its minimum for the year. At that time a large proportion of the water in the river is returned to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.</p><p>During a 21-day period in September 1948, when the flow was least for the year, the average flow of the river as it entered Utah from Wyoming was 515 cfs. In the 437 miles of its course through Utah and Colorado evapotranspiration losses averaged 430 cfs. The average discharge of the Green River into the Colorado was about 975 cfs. Contributions to the river in Utah and Colorado totalled 890 cfsi including 560 from tributaries. The calculated ground-water inflow was about 330 cfs, of which about 75 percent was contributed within the Uinta Basin. Verv little ground water was contributed to the river in the lower 180 miles of its course, where the river flows through canyon lands of the Colorado Plateaus.</p><p>These estimates are based upon information collected during a boat reconnaissance in September 1948, and upon data available from stream-gaging stations along the Green River and many of its tributaries. From these data an accounting was made of the water--as to both quantity and quality--in several segments of the river. For each segment determinations were made of the surface outflow, loss by evapotranspiration, and surface- and ground-water inflow. During the reconnaissance information was also obtained as to the relation of stream flow to regional geology and ground-water hydrology.</p><p>No detailed hydrologic studies have yet been made within the drainage basin of the Green River. On the basis of this recomiaissance, detailed studies in the Uinta Basin, Browns Park, and Echo Park areas are recommended as highly desirable, because of the possible relations of ground-water hydrology to river-basin development projects. The results of the resistivity study are presented both as cross sections and as contour maps. The apparent resistivity curves, their interpretation in terms of the thickness and character of the geological materials, as well logs of the area are given. The index is divided into two principal sections, the surface-water section relating to streams and the ground-water section to wells and springs. Each section contains an index of records on quality of water. All surface-water data in this report are classified by stream name and state. The ground-water data are classified by state and county inasmuch as most ground-water studies and compilations are made on the basis of a county as a unit. Lists of selected publications relating to surface and ground waters appear at the end of the respective sections. These lists include not only most of the publications issued or prepared by the Geological Survey, but also a representative group of publications prepared elsewhere, particularly reports concerned with large parts of, or the entire, basin. Those Federal, State, and municipal agencies now engaged in cooperative water-resources investigations with the Geological Survey are listed in a section following the ground-water portion of this report.
