The shear zone is from 50 to 200 feet wide and has been traced for at least 5 1/2 miles. It trends N. 80&deg; W. across the northern part of the area and cuts the quartz monzonitic rocks of the Boulder batholith and younger silicic intrusive rocks, as well as the pre-batholitic volcanic rocks, and is in turn cut by dacite and andesite dikes.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The youngest period of mineralization is represented by chalcedonic vein zones comprising one or more discontinuous stringers and veins of cryptocrystalline silica in silicified quartz monzonite and in alaskite that has not been appreciably silicified. In some places these zones contain no distinct chalcedonic veins, but are represented only by silicified quartz monzonite. These zones locally contain uranium in association with very small amounts of the following minerals: pyrite, galena, ruby silver, argentite, native silver, molybdenite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and barite. At the Free Enterprise mine, uranium has been produced from a narrow chalcedonic vein that contains disseminated secondary uranium minerals and local small pods of pitchblende and from disseminated secondary uranium minerals in the adjacent quartz monzonite.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Undiscovered commercial deposits of uranium ore may occur spatially associated with the base-and precious-metal deposits along the Comet-Gray Eagle shear zone, and chalcedonic vein zones similar to the Free Enterprise.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei282","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U. Over 170 analyses of rocks and ores are given in this report. A preliminary study of these analyses suggests that the proportion of uranium, vanadium, copper, and silver in the uranium ores varies geographically, and that the pattern of variation may be in part concentric about some of the major laccolithic intrusions. It is also suggested that the following ratios of metals contained in the uranium ores are possible guides to larger-than-average ore deposits: (1) lead/uranium greater than 1, (2) lead/zinc greater than 10, and (3) zinc/geometric mean of cobalt and nickel less than 10.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei278","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Research and the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Riley, L.B., and Shoemaker, E.M., 1952, Distribution of ore deposits and spectrographic analyses of some rocks and ores on the Colorado Plateau: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 278, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei278.","productDescription":"63 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":283426,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei278.png"},{"id":284518,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0278/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Colorado Plateau","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -114.36,33.6 ], [ -114.36,40.27 ], [ -106.92,40.27 ], [ -106.92,33.6 ], [ -114.36,33.6 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd558ee4b0b290850f6619","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Riley, Leonard Benjamin","contributorId":84450,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Riley","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"Benjamin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Shoemaker, Eugene Merle","contributorId":20342,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shoemaker","given":"Eugene","email":"","middleInitial":"Merle","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The sandstones are in the Maroon formation of Permian age. This deposit was explored by means\nof 12 core-drill holes, totalling 2,003 feet.\nThe deposit is on the northeast flank of the Garo anticline, a local structure that probably is related\nto Tertiary tectonic movement. In the vicinity of the deposit the sedimentary rocks strike northwest and\ndip steeply. They are cut by numerous northerly-trending faults that have horizontal displacements of as\nmuch as 1,000 feet. The ore minerals tyuyamunite, carnotite, volborthite, calciovolborthite, malachite,\nazurite, chalcocite(?) , and an unidentified yellow to dark-red vanadium oxide are restricted to a complexly\nfaulted area. The ore body that has yielded most of the uranium ore is in the uppermost ore-bearing sandstone\n(bed no. 1) and is stratigraphically 50 and 150 feet above the ore horizons in sandstones nos. 2 and 3,\nrespectively.\nThe uranium content of samples from the mine workings ranges from 0. 001 to 0. 48 percent uranium;\ndump samples contain as much as 2.39 percent uranium. Tertiary volcanic rocks, considered to be a possible source for uranium in the coal and associated rocks, were examined where the volcanic rocks were near coal-bearing strata. Uranium in possibly commercial amounts was found at La Ventana Mesa, Sandoval County, New Mexico.  Slightly uranifeous coal and carbonaceous shale were found near San Ysidro, Sandoval County, and on Beautiful Mountain, San Juan County, all in New Mexico, and at Keams Canyon, Navajo County, and near Tuba City, Coconino County, in Arizona.  Except for La Ventana deposit, none appeared to be of economic importance at the time this report was written, but additional reconnaissance investigations have been underway this field season, in the area where the deposits occur. Marine black shale of Sevonian age was examined in Otero and Socorro Counties, New Mexico and Gila County, Arizona.  Mississippian black shale in Socorro County and Pennsylvanian black shale in Taos County, New Mexico were also tested.  Equivalent uranium content of samples of these shales did not exceed 0.004 percent.  Rhyolitic tuff from the Mount Taylor region is slightly radioactive as is the Bandelier tuff in the Nacimiento region and in the Jemez Plateau. Volcanic rocks in plugs and dikes in the northern Chuska Mountains and to the north in New Mexico as well as in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah are slightly radioactive.  Coal and carbonaceous rocks in the vicinity of these and similar intrusions are being examined.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem443","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Bachman, G.O., and Read, C., 1952, Trace elements reconnaissance investigations in New Mexico and adjoining states in 1951: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 443, Report: 20 p.; 4 Plates: 15.57 x 24.59 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem443.","productDescription":"Report: 20 p.; 4 Plates: 15.57 x 24.59 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"22","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277988,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283231,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/report.pdf"},{"id":283232,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":283233,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/plate-2.pdf"},{"id":283234,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/plate-3.pdf"},{"id":283235,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0443/plate-4.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona;New Mexico","county":"Apache County;Coconino County;Navajo Counity;San Juan County","otherGeospatial":"Beautiful Mountain;Black Mesa","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -114.82,31.33 ], [ -114.82,37.0 ], [ -103.01,37.0 ], [ -103.01,31.33 ], [ -114.82,31.33 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523d6e6ae4b097188d6c7717","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bachman, George O.","contributorId":25070,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bachman","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Read, Charles B.","contributorId":62291,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Read","given":"Charles B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Free Enterprise vein is one of many silicified reef-like structures in this area, most of which trend about N. 60° E. The cryptocrystalline silica zones of the area are lenticular and are bordered by an altered zone where quartz monzonite is the wall rock. No alteration was noticed where alaskite is adjacent to silica zones. No uranium minerals were observed at the surface, but radioactivity anomalies were noted at 57 outcrops. Underground mining has shown that leaching by downward percolating waters has removed most of the uranium from the near-surface part of the Free Enterprise vein and probably has enriched slightly, parts of the vein and the adjacent wall rock from the bottom of the leached zone to the ground-water level. It is possible that other veins that show low to moderate radioactivity at the surface may contain significant concentrations of uranium minerals at relatively shallow depth. The quartz monzonite appears to be a more favorable host rock for the cryptocrystalline silica and associated uranium minerals than the alaskite. The alaskite occurs as vertical_dikes plug-like masses, and as irregularly shaped, gently dipping masses that are believed to have been intruded into open fractures formed during the cooling of the quartz monzonite.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation the the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Roberts, W., and Gude, A.J., 1952, Geology of the area adjacent to the Free Enterprise uranium-silver Mine, Boulder District, Jefferson County, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 140, Report: 25 p.; Plate: 30.94 inches x 31.33 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem140.","productDescription":"Report: 25 p.; Plate: 30.94 inches x 31.33 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":279205,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0140/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":282985,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0140/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":282984,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0140/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","county":"Jefferson County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112.158652,46.250478 ], [ -112.158652,46.260749 ], [ -112.134312,46.260749 ], [ -112.134312,46.250478 ], [ -112.158652,46.250478 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"528c96aee4b0c629af44ddb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roberts, W.A.","contributorId":13521,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roberts","given":"W.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":285054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gude, A. (2) Searles Station area, Kern county. (3) Soledad area, Kern County. (4) White Tank area, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. (5) Harvard Hills area, San Bernardino County. Anomalous radiation was detected in all but the Harvard Hills area.  The radioactivity anomalies detected in the Rock Corral area are of the greatest amplitude yet recorded by the airborne equipment over natural sources. The activity is apparently attributable to the thorium-beating mineral associated with roof pendants of crystalline metamorphic rocks in a granitic intrusive.  In the Searles Station, Soledad, and White Tank area, several radioactivity anomalies of medium amplitude were recorded, suggesting possible local concentrations of radioactive minerals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem360","collaboration":"Prepared by the Geological Survey for the United States Atomic Energy Commission Technical Information Service, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Meteoric water, percolating downward through the silicic volcanic rocks and into the older rocks along joints and faults, is believed to have brought the uranium compounds into contact with the coal and carbonaceous rocks in which the uranium was absorbed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem340","collaboration":"The report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Vine, J.D., and Moore, G.W., 1952, Occurrence of uranium-bearing coal, carbonaceous shale, and carbonaceous limestone in the Fall Creek area, Bonneville County, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 340, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tem340.","productDescription":"25 p.","numberOfPages":"27","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277882,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0340/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283086,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0340/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","county":"Bonneville County","otherGeospatial":"Fall Creek","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112.519966,43.0196 ], [ -112.519966,43.628799 ], [ -111.043997,43.628799 ], [ -111.043997,43.0196 ], [ -112.519966,43.0196 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523c1cede4b024b60d4072fc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vine, James D.","contributorId":105287,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vine","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484246,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, George W.","contributorId":21625,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Individual issues contain information on volcanic activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.</p><p>The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.</p><p>Six of the Volcano Letters are
