During June and July of 1950 the writers were engaged in a study of bird populations in northern Maine in conjunction with investigations to determine the effectiveness of the breeding bird population as a controlling agent of the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana. The field work was started in 1949 and the current project was a continuation. The entomological phase of the study during both seasons was conducted under the supervision of Philip B. Dowden and V. M. Carolin of the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine; the initial bird population study was made by John W. Aldrich and Robert E. Stewart of the Fish and Wildlife Service (See page 471 of this issue of 'The Auk').
Many data were accumulated concerning bird population dynamics during the initial study. To compare the results of the two seasons and to present other significant facts, additional data are presented here.

\nThe properties in Idaho are the Grunter mine, from which radio-active mill concentrates have been reported; the Kentuck mine; the Ulysses-kittie Burton Mill; and the Garm-Lemoreaux mine.
\nThe properties in Montana are the Armeson-McKenny property in Beaverhead County and the Oro property in Lincoln County.
\nModerate to high radioactivity was noted at the Garm-Lemoreaux mine and the Armeson-McKenney property. That most of this radioactivity is not caused by uranium is suggested by the low uranium content of the majority of the samples. One sample from a dump of the Garm-Lemoreaux mine assayed 0.11 percent uranium.

A plant location in the Alaska Railroad belt seems desirable in view of the advantages of rail transportation and the accessibility of the principal interior markets.
A cement manufacturing operation would require essentially four types of raw materials: 1) calcareous material, 2) argillaceous material, 3) fuel and 4) gypsum.
The relatively favorable location of limestones near Windy station on the Alaska Railroad has led to the investigation of the potential raw materials which would be available to that region.
Three limestone deposits of commercial size occur in the Devonian rocks of the Alaska Range in the Windy Creek area. Two appear to be of suitable chemical character. They are located approximately 7 and 11 miles west of the Railroad respectively.
Twenty-four deposits of various types of argillaceous materials in the Healy River and Windy Creek areas have been sampled and analyzed chemically.
Sufficient and presumably suitable fuel for a potential cement operation appears to be available from the coal mines in the Healy River area.
Gypsum occurs at Sheep Mountain, 120 miles southeast of the Windy Creek area. Potentially sufficient tonnages are available to meet the requirements of a cement plant, but little has been done to develop the deposits.
The raw materials now available probably would be suitable for type I cement, although the alkali limit probably would be exceeded if no means of beneficiation were employed.
