To date, approximately 75 square miles, or about 20 percent of the area, has been mapped on a scale 1 inch=1 mile.\n\nThe White Canyon area is underlain by more than 2,000 feet of sedimentary rocks, Carboniferous to Jurassic(?) in age. The area is on the flank of the Elk Ridge anticline, and the strata have a regional dip of 1 deg to 2 deg SW.\n\nThe Shinarump conglomerate of Late Triassic age is the principal ore-bearing formation. The Shinarump consists of lenticular beds of sandstone, conglomeratic sandstone, clay, and siltstone, and ranges in thickness from a feather edge to as much as 75 feet. Locally the sandstones contain silicified and carbonized wood and fragments of charcoal. These vegetal remains are especially common in channel-fill deposits.\n\nJointing is prominent in the western part of the area, and apparently affects all formations. Adjacent to the joints some of the redbeds in the sequence are bleached.\n\nDeposits of copper-uranium minerals have been found in the Moenkopi, Shinarump, and Chinle formations, but the only production of ore has been from the Shinarump conglomerate. The largest concentration of these minerals is in the lower third of the Shinarump, and the deposits seem to be controlled in part by ancient channel fills and in part by fractures. Locally precipitation of the copper and uranium minerals apparently has been aided by charcoal and clays.\n\nVisible uranium minerals include both hard and soft pitchblende and secondary hydrosulfates, phosphates, and silicates. In addition, unidentified uranium compounds are present in carbonized wood and charcoal, and in veinlets of hydrocarbons. Base-metal sulfides have been identified in all prospects that extend beyond the oxidized zone. Secondary copper minerals in the oxidized zone include the hydrous sulfates and carbonates, and possibly chrysocolla. Those investigations have consisted essentially of the operation of the many gaging stations on the Flathead River and tributaries. The data presented were obtained from a detailed field investigation of the various manmade devices that are factors influencing the quantity or regimen of the flow at the gaging stations. These factors include diversions from the stream, bypass channels carrying water around the gaging stations, return flow from irrigation or other projects, storage and release of flood waters, and other similar factors. Where feasible, the location, size, effect upon the streamflow, periods of use, method of operation, and similar information are given. The information is segregated into sections corresponding to areas determined by the location of gaging stations. An index of streamflow records is included. S. Geological Survey. Those have been essentially investigations of the operation of the many gaging stations on the Rogue River and tributaries. \r\n\r\nThe data presented were obtained from a detailed field investigation of the various #actors resulting from man-made structures that influence the quantity or regimen of the flow at the gaging stations. These factors include diversions from the stream, bypass channels carrying water around the gaging stations, return flow from irrigation or other projects, storage and release of flood waters, and other similar factors. Where feasible, the location, size, effect upon the streamflow periods of use, method of operation,, and similar information are. given. The information is divided into sections corresponding to areas determined by the location of gaging stations. Although production of sulfur in the United States in 1950 was more than double the average annual production for the 1935-39 period, consumption had increased at such a rate that current domestic and foreign demand for U. S. sulfur exceeds the productive capacity of the industry. Production of sulfur (including brimstone, pyrites, and all other forms) in the 1935-39 period and in 1950 are compared in the table below.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological As part of this program, heavy-mineral samples were prepared from cores of the test wells and core holes and studied to determine stratigraphic correlations. Using the following criteria: (1) presence of diagnostic minerals or mineral suites; (2) relative abundance of specific minerals; (3) degree of rounding of mineral grains; (4) distinction as to grain form; eight heavy-mineral zones have been recognized in Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary sedimentary rocks. Correlations based on these zones are shown.
