However, the water probably would require treatment for most industrial uses. Ground water is used in Little Rock and vicinity at an estimated rate of about 10 million gallons per day. The most productive water-bearing material consists of alluvial deposits along the Arkansas River and in a large area extending northeast, east, and southeast of the city. Records of 41 selected wells and chemical analyses of water from 28 wells tapping these deposits are given below. The location of the area is show on figure 1. Although the present municipal wells provide a fairly adequate supply for current municipal needs, which averaged about three-quarters of a million gallons a day in 1946, there is great need for large supplies of good water, on the order of 10 million gallons a day, for use by the paper mills and other industries there. At present the industries are using water from the St. Louis River, but the water is unsatisfactory and expensive to use because it contains a large amount of objectionable organic The major structural feature of the district is the Virgin anticline, a fold extending southwestward toward St. George. The anticline has been breached by erosion, and sandstone hogbacks or 'reefs' are carved from the Shinarump conglomerate mud sandstone members of the Chinle formation, both of Triassic age. Thirteen occurrences of uranium-vanadium minerals, all within the Tecumseh sandstone, which is the upper part of the Silver Reef sandstone member of the Chinle formation, have been examined over an area about 1.75 miles wide and 3 miles long.\r\n\r\nTwo shipments of uranium-vanadium ore have been produced from the Chloride Chief and Silver Point claims. Samples from the deposits contain as much as 0.94 percent U3O8. The ore contains several times as much vanadium oxide as uranium, some copper, and traces of silver. It occurs in thinly bedded cross-bedded shales and sandstones within the fluviatile Tecumseh sandstone member of the Chinle formation. The ore beds are lenticular and are localized 2 near the base, center, and top of this sandstone member. Y. One of </span><span>the ten principal supply </span><span>wells, screened in the </span><span>sands of the Magothy (?) formation which is overlain unconformably </span><span>by the </span><span>sand and gravel of the upper Pleistocene deposits, was pumped for more than </span><span>24 hours at a rate of 790 gallons per minute. During this time the develop</span><span>ment of the </span><span>cone of depression extended a distance of more than 1,000 feet </span><span>from the pumping well. A </span><span>coefficient of transmissibility of 245,0W gallons </span><span>per day per foot was computed and a coefficient of storage of 0.13 was de</span><span>termined at the site of the pumping test. </span></p><p><span>The qualitative results show that the two aquifers at the pumping-test site, that is, the sand and gravel of the upper Pleistocene deposits and the underlying sands of the Magothy (?) formation, function essentially as one hydrologic unit. Such information, together with other data of this kind, assumes importance when it is realized that the New York rater Power and Control Commission by regulation considers every aquifer as a separate and distinct hydrologic unit. The average daily pumpage&nbsp;for the city in 1950 was reported to be about 18.5 million gallons. Because of the extreme variability in the quality of the river water and the extensive treatment necessary, the city considered the possibility of developing a ground-water supply to supplement its present surface-water supply.</p><p>In February, 1951 Mr. Oliver N. Summers, General Superintendent, Evansville Waterworks Department, in a letter to C.K. Behert, Director, Division of Water Resources, Indiana Department of Conservation, requested the assistance of the Department of Conservation and the United States Geological Survey in conducting a pumping test to determine the hydraulic characteristics of the water-bearing formations in the area.</p><p>In view of the importance of Evansville as an industrial center and realizing the need for quantitative information in such an area, it was decided that the test should be a part of the statewide investigation of the ground-water resources now being made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Conservation.</p><p>This memorandum describes the procedure used in making the test and the results obtained from the test.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, IN","doi":"10.3133/ofr51138","usgsCitation":"Mickels, F.C., and Ward, P.E., 1951, Report on a pumping test at Evansville, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 51-138, Report: 10 p.; Precipitation amounted to as much as 15 inches in 2 hours in some sections. As a result, many small streams and a reach of the Little Kanawha River in the vicinity of Burnsville and Gilmer reached the highest stages known. Computations based on special surveys made at suitable sites on representative small streams in the areas of intense flooding indicate that peak discharges closely approach 50 percent of the Jarvis scale.</p><p>Twenty-three lives were lost on the small tributaries as numerous homes were swept away by the flood, which developed with incredible rapidity during the early morning hours. Damage estimated at <span>$</span>1,300,000 resulted to farm buildings, crops, land, livestock, railroads, highways, and gas- and oil-producing facilities.
