Five formations have been recognized as a result of of recent investigations by the author and other geologists of the Navy Oil Unit, U.S. Geological Survey. In the western Brooks Range, the three formations present below the Lisburns formation are: Utukok formation (Upper Touranisian to Lower Visean), Montak formation (restricted) (Upper Devonian to Lower Tournaisian (?)) and Hunt Fork (?) formation (Upper Devonian). In the central Brooks Range the Kayak formation (Lower to Upper Tournaisian), Kanayut formation (Upper Devonian to Lower Tournaisian (?)), and Hunt Fork formation (Upper Devonian) lie below the Lisburns formation.</p><p>Lithologic and faunal characteristics of these sedimentary units reveal the regional pattern of sedimentation and suggest specific paleoecologic environments. The chart conglomerates in the Kanayut and Noatuk formations are thought to have formed in a belt characterized by fluctuating marine and nonmarine conditions, the chart source being a mid-Devonian ragolith.</p><p>Analysis of formulas suggest certain correlations with the European, Siberian, and western Cordilleran sections.</p><p>Described faunas of the Utukok and Kayak formations include 40 braciopod species and varieties, 9 echinodera species, 2 bryzoan species, 8 molluscan species, and 1 tribute species, of which 13 are new.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological In addition to descriptive observations, the record books also contain hundreds of annotated photographs and sketches, as well as temperature and transit measurements. When photographs are included, the camera settings and film types used are noted. The field notes, sketches, and photographs used to compile the record books provide an unparalleled record of eruptive activity and were the basis for published newspaper reports and periodic bulletins, such as the <a href=\"../publication/70268164\" data-mce-href=\"../publication/70268164\">Hawaiian Volcano Observatory bulletins</a> and <a href=\"../publication/70246900\" data-mce-href=\"../publication/70246900\">The volcano letter</a>. &nbsp;</p><p>HVO staff also painstakingly prepared a second copy of each early record book, virtually identical to the original, complete with photographs and sketches. The original version of the record book was kept at HVO, while the duplicate went to the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which was created by a group of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, businessmen to promote HVO’s work. The Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which dissolved decades ago, held the duplicate books in Honolulu, where they were more readily accessible to the public. After 1923, HVO stopped duplicating the books—at least, no duplicate records for subsequent years have been found. During the decade of the 1940s, preparation of the record books stopped altogether. In 1952, compilation of the record books resumed and continued, with long gaps, until early 1966. Entries in these later volumes are sparse, and these books are little more than photo albums of the episodic eruptions of Kīlauea.&nbsp;</p><p>The original record books were held at HVO and, later, at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. In 1972, the original record books for the years 1912 through 1939 were transferred to the Bishop Museum, in Honolulu, for safekeeping. These record books are now stored in archival boxes at that institution (accession number 172.265). The duplicate set of record books held by the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association were bound into volumes at an unknown date and turned over to the U.S. Geological Survey. This set of record books, spanning 1912 through 1923, is now housed in the rare book room of the U.S. Geological Survey Library in Reston, Virginia (catalog number 220(950) H3d). The record books for 1952 through early 1966 remain in storage at HVO. After 1955, typed annotations were no longer placed in the record books, and only photographs, most with captions, were included. Although the volumes titled “Record Book” end with the 1955 volume, the photograph albums that followed are similar, and the record book designation is retained for simplicity. Note that the photographs in these albums were not all originally arranged in chronological order.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Hawaiian Volcano Observatory","usgsCitation":"Hawaiian The phosphate deposits are in the Bone Valley formation, dated Pliocene by most writers. These strata overlie the Miocene Hawthorn formation and are overlain by consolidated sands 3 to 20 feet thick.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The minable phosphate deposits, called “matrix” in the district, range from a featheredge to about 50 feet in thickness and consist of phosphatic pellets and nodules, quartz sand, and montmorillonitic clay in about equal proportions. Locally the matrix displays cross-bedding and horizontal laminations, but elsewhere it is structureless. The phosphorite particles, composed largely of carbonate-fluorapatite, range in diameter from less than 0.1 mm to about 60 cm and in P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5<sub> content from 30 to 36 percent. Coarse-pebble deposits, containing 30 to 34 percent P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5<sub>  are found mainly on basement highs; and fine-pebble deposits, containing 32 to 36 percent P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5<sub> are, are found in basement lows. Deposits in the northern part of the field contain more phosphate particles and their P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5<sub>  content is higher than those in the southern part.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The upper part of the phosphatic strata is leached to an advanced degree and consists of quartz sand and clay-sized particules of pseudowavellite and wavellite. The leached zone ranges in thickness from a featheredge to 60 feet.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The origin of the land-pebble deposits is incompletely known. Particular emphasis in the examination was placed on coal and carbonaceous shale associated with volcanic rocks, as volcanic rocks in many area appear to have released uranium to circulating ground water from which it was concentrated in carbonaceous material. Twenty-two area in Montana and one area of Idaho were examine. The coal in five of these area is of Cretaceous age. The coal and carbonaceous shale in the remaining 18 area occur in Tertiary \"lake-bed\" deposits of Oligocene and younger age.  Both the Cretaceous and Tertiary coal and carbonaceous shale are associated with contemporaneous or younger volcanic rocks and pyroclastic sequences.  A sample of carbonaceous shale from the Prickly Pear Valley northeast of Helena, Montana, contained 0.013 percent uranium. A sample of carbonaceous shale from the Flint Creek Valley southwest of Drummond, Montana, contained 0.006 percent uranium. All other samples of both Cretaceous and Tertiary coal and carbonaceous shale were essentially non-radioactive. No further work is planned on the Cretaceous and Tertiary coal and carbonaceous shale in western Montana. About 1,400 such samples were collected and analyzed spectrographically for about 20 elements that were of strategic importance, in order to determine whether any of the products analyzed might be possible sources of some of the needed elements. When attention was directed to radioactive elements in 1943, most of the samples were scanned for radioactivity. Part of the work was done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the Atomic Energy Commission.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The sources, mine mill, smelter, or prospect, from which these samples were collected, the kind of material sampled, i.e. ores, concentrates, middlings, tailings, flue dusts, and so forth, and the radioactivity of the samples are listed in this report. Samples of the materials collected in the course of the Geological Survey’s investigations for uranium are excluded, but about 500 such samples were analyzed spectrographically for some or all of the same 20 elements sought in the samples that are the subject of this report. Most of the samples were tested only for their radioactivity, but a few were analyzed chemically for uranium. The radioactivity of many of the samples tested in the early screening was determined only qualitatively. Several samples were tested at one time, and if the count obtained did not exceed a predetermined minimum above background, the samples were not tested individually. If the count was more than this minimum, the samples were tested individually to identify the radioactive sample or samples and to obtain a quantitative value for the radioactivity. In general, the rough screening served as a basis for separating samples in which the radioactivity amount to less than 0.003 percent equivalent uranium from those in which it exceeded that amount. The&nbsp;</span>mine<span>&nbsp;is approximately in the geographical center of the Humboldt region. Precambrian rocks form the bedrock. Late Cenozoic unconsolidated river wash and valley fill with some interbedded basalt locally mantle the Precambrian rocks, especially in the north-central part of the region. The Precambrian rocks consist of two metamorphosed volcanic formations and intrusive rocks that range in composition from quartz porphyry to gabbro. The volcanic formations originally were flows, volcanic breccias, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Dynamothermal metamorphism of these rocks formed textures, structures, and mineral assemblages characteristic of low-grade ;riietamorphic rocks, but sufficient relict textures and structures remain to permit delineation of formations on the bases of their original nature. All the Precambrian rocks are foliated, except those in the interior parts of the larger intrusive masses. This foliation has two major trends, (1) north to N 20° W, and (2) N 20° E. The northeast-trending foliation is younger and locally is superimposed on the north- to northwest-trending foliation. The Precambrian rocks strike north to northwest and dip steeply, chiefly westward. Duplication of stratigraphic units and determination of tops suggest two major northeast-trending folds, which probably plunge southward. The northeast-trending foliation appears to bear an axial-plane relationship to these folds. Some masses of igneous rock probably were intruded during development of foliation. The&nbsp;</span>Iron<span>&nbsp;</span>King<span>&nbsp;deposit supports the only active&nbsp;</span>mine<span>&nbsp;in the Humboldt region. It consists of 12 steeply plunging echelon veins arranged along the footwall of a sheared and altered zone in the metamorphosed andesitic tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Narrow zones of more intense shear probably localized the veins. Solutions first introduced quartz, pyrite, ankerite, and sericite, forming a sporadically mineralized zone (in the hanging wall of the deposit) and probably veins in the&nbsp;</span>Iron<span>&nbsp;</span>King<span>&nbsp;fracture system. Intra-mineralization shear strongly brecciated these early minerals and formed the structures that localized and distributed the ore minerals in the veins. After this deformation, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, tennantite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, quartz, and ankerite were deposited; the last three minerals may have formed through solution and the redeposition of earlier minerals. Formation of sericite either accompanied or followed the deposition of ore-forming minerals. Silver is related closely in distribution to copper and probably is in the tennantite. Gold occurs chiefly in the pyrite. Banding, mimetic after foliation and planes developed by shearing, is pronounced in much of the vein material. This fact may be the reason why prolonged sulfonamide therapy sometimes fails to free all trout from Bacterium salmonicida. The quantity of food given with a standard dosage of sulfamerazine has a pronounced effect on the tissue concentration of sulfamerazine; the concentration increased when the quantity of food decreased. It appears therefore, that trout should be fed at a rate very closely adjusted to their optimum feeding requirements for the best practical results. The start of treatment with high initial doses of sulfamerazine had no effect on the tissue concentration sustained by the maintenance dosage. The relative distribution of sulfamerazine in various organs and tissues of rainbow trout was about the same as in brown and brook trout. The only difference noticed was the lack of peak levels of short duration between the 8 and 10 days of treatment, which is characteristic for brook and brown trout.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1951)81[101:FSOFDT]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Snieszko, S.F., and Friddle, S.B., 1952, Further studies on factors determining tissue levels of sulfamerazine in trout: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 81, no. 1, p. 101-110, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1951)81[101:FSOFDT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"101","endPage":"110","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131568,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"81","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a846a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Snieszko, S. Marking was done during the period from May 3 to 17, 1950, at six main stations, all located in the southern end of Green Bay.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The average length of the tagged perch was 7.3 inches and all fell within the range 5.5&ndash;14.4 inches. Most (90.9 percent) of the fish were below the minimum legal length of 8.0 inches. The follow-up procedure consisted of informing commercial and sports fishermen of the program and enlisting their cooperation in watching for marked fish; accounts of the investigation were released through newspapers and descriptive posters were distributed. The personnel connected with the investigation examined catches frequently.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The large majority (101 or 79.5 percent) of the 127 tagged perch recaptured in the experimental nets during the marking operations were retaken at the tagging station at which they were released.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Of the 108 tagged perch captured by commercial fishermen and anglers following the opening of the season on May 20, 96 were taken by drop nets, 6 by gill nets, and 6 by hook and line. The mean lengths for the three groups were 7.7, 7.1, and 9.25 inches, respectively. All recoveries were made in the Wisconsin waters of Green Bay.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Most of the &ldquo;open-season&rdquo; recoveries (86 fish; 79.6 percent) were made during the period May 20-May 31. Recaptures during subsequent months were: June&ndash;14; July&ndash;7; August&ndash;none; September&ndash;1. Of the 86 perch recaptured May 20&ndash;31, 70 were retaken inside and 16 outside the tagging area. The majority (14 of 22) of those recovered after May 31 were retaken outside the tagging area.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The average length of the 20 tagged yellow perch recaptured by drop nets (data restricted to fish from a single type of net to avoid bias from gear selectivity) outside the tagging area (8.42 inches) was 0.96 inch greater than the mean length (7.46 inches) of the 76 fish retaken inside the area. This statistically highly significant difference lends support to the belief of commercial fishermen that the larger of the yellow perch that spawn in southern Green Bay move out soon after spawning.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The percentage of recapture of tagged perch increased sharply with increase in the size of the fish. Not one of 169 tagged fish less than 6.5 inches long was recovered. The rates of recapture at greater lengths were: 6.5 to 8.9 inches&ndash;2.5 percent; 9.0 to 9.9 inches&ndash;11.4 percent; 10.0 to 14.4 inches&ndash;16.7 percent. Among the several factors suggested in explanation of this relationship, the most important appear to be the lesser ability of the smaller fish to survive the rigors of handling and tagging, greater loss of tags from the smaller fish, and the greater likelihood of overlooking the smaller of the tagged fish in the sorting of the catch.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">The factors just mentioned and the lack of knowledge of the efficiency of measures taken to obtain records of recoveries preclude the 2.6-percent return of all tagged fish from being accepted as an approximation of the rate of recapture. Neither should the 6.6-percent return of tagged fish of legal size (8 inches and longer) be taken as an estimate of the rate of exploitation.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Although 465 fin-clipped perch were recovered in the experimental nets during the marking operations, only 68 of 24,799 fish so marked were recovered after the fishing season opened. All but one of these 68 were retaken near the point of marking. The difficulty of detecting a perch with a missing membranous dorsal is believed to be a major cause of the poor returns from fin-clipped fish.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">These investigations have demonstrated that for studying migration of yellow perch, tagging is superior to fin-clipping as a method of marking. The technique of the tagging, however, needs to be improved, and better means must be found to trace tagged fish of small size. Furthermore certain small regions in the bay not at present open to commercial fishing must be explored in order to obtain more comprehensive information as to migration.</div>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1951)81[150:MOYPMI]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Mraz, D., 1952, Movements of yellow perch marked in southern Green Bay, Lake Michigan, in 1950: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 81, no. 1, p. 150-161, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1951)81[150:MOYPMI]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"150","endPage":"161","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131664,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"81","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b482f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mraz, Donald","contributorId":21502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mraz","given":"Donald","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
