The iron formation, where unoxidized, consists largely of interlaminated chert and siderite. It is underlain by a graphitic slate containing about 20 per cent iron in the form of very finely disseminated pyrite. Graywacke overlies the iron formation with at least local disconformity; this rock consists of clastic grains in a matrix of siderite or iron-rich chlorite. Above the gray-wacke is a magnetic ironstone, a laminated rock that now consists of iron-rich chlorite, magnetite, chert, and siderite, each layer being an intermixture of two or more of these constituents. The average iron content of the entire sequence, including the iron formation, is approximately 20 per cent. The rocks are only slightly metamorphosed, although the area is one of intense structural deformation.

The origin of the rocks is discussed, and it is concluded that the high iron content is primary. The rocks are believed to be the products of an era of iron-rich sedimentation in which the specific iron mineral formed —sulfide, carbonate, or silicate—depended upon the immediate depositional environment. Inasmuch as the formation of iron-rich minerals continued despite extensive changes in both the basin of deposition and the adjacent land areas, the ultimate cause for such an epoch is one that transcended such factors. Evidence is presented to show that the climate of the era, when linked with certain other factors, is entirely adequate to explain the formation of these iron-rich rocks.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1951)62[251:IFAARI]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"James, H., 1951, Iron formation and associated rocks in the Iron River district, Michigan: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 62, no. 3, p. 251-266, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1951)62[251:IFAARI]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"251","endPage":"266","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386751,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Michigan","otherGeospatial":"Iron River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.121337890625,\n              45.75219336063106\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.82470703125,\n              45.75219336063106\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.82470703125,\n              45.9511496866914\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.121337890625,\n              45.9511496866914\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.121337890625,\n              45.75219336063106\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"62","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"James, Harold L.","contributorId":88204,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"James","given":"Harold L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":818283,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The field party consisted of two geologists, two field assistants, a cook, and a weasel mechanic. Three weasels were used for transportation of equipment and personnel.

The area examined covers approximately 1,000 square miles of the Arctic Foothills province and lies between the Itkillik River on the east and the Chandler River on the west. The area is drained by the Itkillik, Nanushuk, Anaktuvuk, Siksikpuk, and Chandler Rivers.

The mapped area adjoins the Okpikruak and Kiruktagiak Rivers area 1/ to the west.

The primary objective of the geologic work in this area was detailed stratigraphic study of pre-Nanushuk group rocks in the Southern Foothills belt as a supplement to the Work begun in the Okpikruak and Kiruktagiak Rivers area in 1949. A secondary objective was areal mapping and structural studies for the purpose of delimiting structures favorable for drilling tests of the Lisburne limestone.

Parts of this area had been reconnoitered by members of the U. S. Geological Survey in previous years. In 1901 F. C. Schrader traversed the Anaktuvuk River, In 1945 R. E. Fellows, R. M. Chapman, and C. T. Bressler visited outcrops along the northern margin of the area in the vicinity of the Anaktuvuk River and Kanayut Creek. E. J. Webber and R. L. Detterman examined a few of the cutbanks along the Nanushuk River in 1947; and in 1949 A. L. Bowsher, Sr., and J. T. Dutro mapped an outlier of Lisburne limestone north of Nanushuk Lake.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/70210451","usgsCitation":"Patton, W.W., and Keller, A.S., 1951, Stratigraphy and structure of the upper Siksikpuk - Nanushuk Rivers area: Geological Investigations, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4, Alaska 42, Report: 20 p.; 6 Plates: 55.47 x 33.90 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/70210451.","productDescription":"Report: 20 p.; 6 Plates: 55.47 x 33.90 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":401218,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401217,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401216,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401215,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401214,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401213,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401212,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":396582,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70210451/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":375321,"rank":1,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74621.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"upper Siksikpuk - Nanushuk Rivers area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152.4,\n              69.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.4,\n              69.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.8667,\n              69.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.8667,\n              69.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.4,\n              69.25\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patton, William W. Rotting rootlets provide passageways for water in addition to physical structure and texture.

The impression is gained that mechanical treatment, such as plowing and harrowing, general decreases the infiltration capacity of soil, through destruction of surface structure, and fragmentation. This appears true of the soil in the physical sense. Equally true, in a plowed soil, may be the formation of puddling colloids after a rain, through the breaking of natural granules into fragments. However, the surface infiltration is increased by plowing and harrowing through the turnover of the sod layer composed of grasses and weeds. Smith does not consider the sod layer as a soil zone, yet it is the first barrier that precipitation must pass before it enters the structural crevices and textural pores of the soil. Although a dense sod layer usually does not increase runoff because of its retentive nature, it increases interception, and hence evaporation, so unless the sod is economic, the water is lost anyway.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR032i002p00282","usgsCitation":"Rasmussen, W.C., and Smith, W.O., 1951, Discussion of “pedological relations of infiltration phenomena”: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 32, no. 20, p. 282-283, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR032i002p00282.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"282","endPage":"283","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":383060,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"20","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rasmussen, W. It summarizes available information on the water resources of this 90-square mile area and evaluates current supplies. Future development of the area may change both the available quantity and the quality of the water supply. The effective development of the area demands a continuing knowledge of the water used and the potential quantity and quality of water available from both underground and surface sources. The area is strategically important to a great industrial section of the Bast. Its eastern boundary is a 26-mile segment of the Delaware River along the extreme southeastern border of Bucks County, Pa. (fig. 1). The present.population of the area is about 40,000, including 24,800 in Bristol Borough and Township and 6,770 in Morrisville. The area is traversed by both the Pennsylvania and the Reading Railroads and also by U.S. Highways 1 and 13. These are main transportation routes connecting the great market outlets of Philadelphia and New York. The Delaware River'is navigable from Morrisville to the sea. The area is only a short distance upstream from the Port of Philadelphia, which ranks second only to New York as the most important seaport in the United States. The area is mostly flat, open land 10 to 60 feet above mean sea level. It contains several large Industries, concentrated chiefly in the Bristol area (pi. 1). There are also scattered industries in the Morrisville, Langhorne, and Bensalem areas. However, Bucks County retains some of the characteristics of a farming region. Truck farming and gardening are still carried on to a considerable extent. Along Delaware River below Morrisville the mining of sand and gravel is an Important industry. The facts summarized in this report have been accumulated over a period of 25 years or more by Federal, State, and local agencies in connection with Investigations for other purposes. Most of the data used in this report have been obtained by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, the Pennsylvania Department of Internal Affairs, the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce, and State Planning Board, the City of Philadelphia, the Corps of Engineers, and the Interstate Commission on the Delaware River Basin. This report was prepared in the Water Resources Division of the U.S.Geological Survey by Jack B. Qraham, District Geologist; John W. Mangan, District Engineer; and Walter F. The mine had been prospected intermittently for copper and zinc since 1,916, but there is no record that ore was produced. The country rock is pre-Cambrian granite containing many schist inclusions and narrow pegmatite dikes. Pitchblende disseminated in chlorite and sulfides was deposited in an obscure vein system during an intermediate stage of mineralization. This stage was preceded by biotitic alteration of amphiboles and sulfide deposition. The latest stage of mineralization is represented-by the limonitic dense quartz vein followed during mining. The uranium-bearing vein is about 2-3 feet wide and the dense quartz vein is less than 6 inches wide. Both veins are bordered by 1-3 feet of biotite- and sulfide-bearing granite and arriphibole schist. The uranium content of 26 samples taken in the mine and on the dump ranges from 0.002 to 1.40 percent. These samples contained as much as 2.97 percent copper and 5.96 percent zinc. The general outlook for further prospecting near the Copper King shaft is not favorable, because much of the 'immediately surrounding area has been thoroughly investigated without finding abnormal radioactivity. The most favorable environment for concentration of uranium minerals appears to have been in or near schist inclusions in granite, and further exploration in nearby prospects may result in the discovery of other uranium-bearing deposits. In the Copper King mine, additional exploration would aid in determining the extent of the uranium-bearing material.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/tem128A","usgsCitation":"Granger, H.C., and King, R.U., 1951, Uranium in the Copper King Mine, Black Hawk No. 1 Claim, Larimer County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 128, Report: 22 p.; Plate: 24.34 inches x 10.77 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem128A.","productDescription":"Report: 22 p.; Plate: 24.34 inches x 10.77 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":8505,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0128-A/plate-3.pdf"},{"id":279188,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0128-A/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":282978,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0128-A/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Larimer County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105.471840,40.836282 ], [ -105.471840,40.852449 ], [ -105.518789,40.852449 ], [ -105.518789,40.836282 ], [ -105.471840,40.836282 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"528c96bee4b0c629af44de0f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Granger, Harry Clifford","contributorId":8832,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granger","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"Clifford","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":285040,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Robert Ugstad","contributorId":45696,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Ugstad","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":285041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The basaltic lavas, which range in thickness from 100 to 1,400 feet, contain ilmenite, magnetite, hematite, intergrowths of magnetite-ilmenite and ilmenite-hematite, copper sulfides, native copper, and pyrite. Variations of opaque iron minerals with thickness of flow are slight, but native copper predominates in the thinner flows and copper sulfides in the thickest. Pyrite occurs only in the thickest flow. Two groups of opaque minerals and their alteration products are distinguished. The earlier group includes magnetite, ilmenite, magnetite-ilmenite and ilmenite-hematite intergrowths, copper sulfides, and native copper. The later group includes hematite, native copper, chalcocite, pyrite, chlorite, and sphene. The second-generation minerals formed by the action of volatiles escaping from the lavas. The ratio of Ti to total Fe correlates with the degree of differentiation of the lavas, but the ratio of ferric to ferrous iron does not. The latter ratio was controlled primarily by the action of escaping volatiles.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.46.1.51","usgsCitation":"Cornwall, H.R., 1951, Ilmenite, magnetite, hematite, and copper in lavas of the Keweenawan series: Economic Geology, v. 46, no. 1, p. 51-67, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.46.1.51.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"51","endPage":"67","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386755,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"46","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1951-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cornwall, Henry Rowland","contributorId":68304,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cornwall","given":"Henry","email":"","middleInitial":"Rowland","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":818290,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
