The first of a series of reports giving detailed stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in the Western phosphate field as measured and described by the Geological Survey will be released as Circulars within the next few months. Because of the needs of industry for many of these data during the 1951 field season, and in view of the unavoidable delays attendant on publication, the tabular data to be included in these Circulars are hereby placed on open file in simple reproduction form (prepared by Ozalid from photographic negatives) and without explanatory text so that immediate use may be made of the data.

The tables include data on sections in four states: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah; and the tables for each of these states are bound together as individual reports. The tables include name and location of section measured, brief description of geologic setting, acknowledgments for field and analytical work, abstract data on the sections (bed number, rock name, sample number, and thickness), and analytical data on the samples. The analytical data include reports on P2O5 and acid insoluble for all samples and additional analyses, such as Al203, Fe703, loss on ignition, F, and V2O5, for selected samples. Spectrographic analyses for a large number of elements are included samples from selected localities, and special analyses have been made of a few samples.

These reports are placed on open file at the offices of the Geological Survey in Washington, D. C., Spokane, Washington, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Montpelier, Idaho, and at the offices of the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, Moscow, Idaho, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Butte, Montana, and the Wyoming Geological Survey, Laramie, Wyoming, and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The first of a series of reports giving detailed stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in the Western phosphate field as measured and described by the Geological Survey will be released as Circulars within the next few months. Because of the needs of industry for many of these data during the 1951 field season, and in view of the unavoidable delays attendant on publication: the tabular data to be included in these Circulars are hereby placed on open file in simple reproduction form (prepared by Ozalid from photographic negatives) and without explanatory text so that immediate use may be made of the data.

The tables include data on sections in four states: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah; and the tables for each of these states are bound together as individual reports. The tables include name and location of section measured, brief description of geologic setting, acknowledgments for field and analytical work, abstract data on the sections (bed number, rock name, sample number, and thickness), and analytical data or the samples. The analytical data include reports on P2O5 and acid insoluble for all samples and additional analyses, such as Al203, Fe703, loss on ignition, F, and V2O5, for selected samples. Spectrographic analyses for a large number of elements are included for samples from selected localities, and special analyses have been made of a few samples.

These reports are placed on open file at the offices of the Geological Survey in Washington, D. C., Spokane, Washington, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Montpelier, Idaho, and at the offices of the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, Moscow, Idaho, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Butte, Montana, and the Wyoming Geological Survey, Laramie, Wyoming, and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

In area coverage and magnitude of peak discharge the floods of April-May 1950 in the Missouri River Basin in North and South Dakota were unprecedented in the area. These floods were characterized by an extremely late spring breakup of ice, by great flood peaks resulting from snow melt, and by two separate floods in the James River Valley in less than a month.

\n

The primary cause of the floods was the rapid melting of the season's great accumulation of snow, one of the deepest on record. In the period between the normal spring breakup time and the actual breakup of river ice, considerably more snow accumulated. Some of this was melted by a few warm days and the melt was stored as water behind snow barriers in upland watercourses. A sudden increase in temperature beginning April 13 and lasting until most of the snow had been converted into runoff resulted in rapid rise of flood waters.

\n

Tributary flood waters made the Missouri River from Mobridge to Yankton, S. Dak., rise to near the maximum recorded discharge. At Sioux City, Iowa, the 1950 flood peak-discharge exceeded any previously recorded by the Geological Survey.

\n

The center of the flooded area west of the Missouri River lay in the Cannonball River Basin which had the greatest water content of snow on the ground just before the ice broke up Floods north and south of this area were relatively less intense. Scattered records of the Cannonball River and a study of newspaper accounts and other information show that the flood of 1950 was greatest since the area was settled. Flooding of the James River at Jamestown was the greatest since 1897, and the floods of April and May 1950 were of nearly the same stage.

\n

Itemized flood damages were made by Federal and State agencies, and relief was sent to the area by the Department of the Army and the American National Red Cross.

\n

Data include records of stage and discharge at 54 gaging stations for the period of flood, a summary of peak discharges and comparative data for past and present maxima, a table of crest stages, and weather associated with the 1950 flood.

Ship Creek drains an area in the Chugach Mountains, flows westward through Anchorage, and empties into Knik Arm. It emerges from the mountains 10 miles east of Anchorage and above that point has a drainage area of 90 square miles. Stream flow records for the 4 year period, 1947 through 1950, show a mean flow of 156 second-feet with a variation from 114 second-feet for 1950 to 198 second-feet for 1949. The monthly distribution of flow has considerable variation with about one-fifth of the runoff in the 6 month period December to May, and about one-half the runoff in the 3 month period, June, July, and August. Storage is therefore required for regulation and most effective use of the streamflow. There is no natural storage in the basin. Storage possibilities and power developments are not favorable. Two possible sites are considered in this report, one at mile 1.0 and one at mile 3.5. Development at the former site would produce 3200 and 2300 KW for 50 percent and 90 percent of the time while development at the latter would produce 5000 and 4400 KW for 50 percent and 90 percent of the time.

Ship Creek is not a glacier fed stream and thus is free from glacial silt and offers a good source of municipal and industrial water supply. The natural flow is sufficient to supply present demands and it is believed that with the development of storage demands created by any foreseeable expansion of Anchorage and the surrounding area can readily be met.

The Mohall area includes about 120 square miles in Bottineau and Renville Counties in northwestern North Dakota. Mohall, whose 1950 population was 1,073, is the only town in the area.

The area is part of the Drift Prairie section of the Central Lowland physiographic province. It is characterized by the gently undulating ground moraine plain which slopes regionally to the northeast. It is drained by several southeast-trending intermittent streams which run almost at right angles to the regional slope.

The geologic formations in the Mohall area may be conveniently grouped into three units: the alluvium or alluvial deposits, which are found in the valleys of the intermittent streams, the till and associated glaciofluvial deposits, and the bedrock formations.

Ground water of reasonably good quality is obtained in the area only from the alluvial deposits. Because of the limited areal extent of these deposits, only a small number of farms obtain water supplies from them. However, the municipal water supply of the town of Mohall is obtained from these deposits in Spring Coulee northeast of the town, and much water for rural domestic use is hauled from the Becker well southwest of the town, in Little Deep Creek.

The principal source of recharge to the alluvial deposits is seepage during the spring runoff period. Natural discharge occurs by underflow down the stream valleys, by evaporation from open water and marshy areas and transpiration by plants.

The coefficient of transmissibility of the alluvium, n the basis of short pumping tests on Mohan wells 3 and 4, is indicated to be about 6,000 gallons a day per foot at well 3 and about 20,000 gallons a day per foot at well 4. The specific yield was computed as 0.25 from the pumping test on well 3. No gravel of importance was encountered in the two cross sections that were drilled across Spring Coulee near the municipal wells, and the greatest thickness of saturated alluvial deposits found was only about 10 feet.

A Saturated thickness of 20 feet of sand and gravel was penetrated in test drilling along Cut Bank Creek. This is the greatest thickness of saturated alluvial deposits penetrated anywhere in the area. Ground water in storage in these alluvial deposits has been estimated to be about 150 million gallons per mile. These deposits are favorably situated to receive recharge, as Cut Bank Creek drains a rather large area and contains long stretches of open water perennially, Therefore, it is believed that the alluvial deposits of Cut Bank Creek offer the best promise for the development of moderately large perennial ground-water supplies for the present and probable future needs of the town of Mohall.

Test drilling in West Cut Bank Creek and in Little Deep Creek did not reveal alluvial deposits of such character and saturated thickness as to be considered favorable for the development of moderate to large water supplies, though some of the material encountered should yield adequate quantities for farm supplies.

The till with its associated glaciofluvial deposits is the surface formation in the area except where covered by the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. In the Mohall areas, this formation is not an important aquifer and fewer than half a dozen wells are known to obtain water from it. The glaciofluvial deposits penetrated by the test holes are not considered adequate sources for permanent municipal or industrial supplies because they are likely to have small-areal extent and the overlying, relatively impermeable till makes seasonal recharge to them practically impossible.

Test drilling in the Souris River Valley about 12 miles west of Mohall penetrated as mutt as 58 feet of fluvial sediments, but practi-cally all the material is clay and silt. No important aquifers were found there.

At least 50 percent of all the farm water supplies in the area are obtained from wells in the bedrock formations, which probably consist of the Fox Hills sandstone, the Cannonball formation, and the Ludlow and Tongue Rtter members of the Fort Union formation.

Underlying these formations is approximately 2,600 feet of Cretaceous shale, which'is not water bearing. Water from the \"Dakota\" sandstone (including the possible equivalent of the Fuson shale and Lakota sandstone) may be obtained at depths of about 3,200 to 3,300 feet. The \"Dakota sandstone\" probably would yield water in sufficient quantity for municipal and many industrial purposes in this areas but the water is likely to be too highly mineralized for most domestic uses.

Jurassic formations underlie the Cretaceous formations in the area. They do not constitute aquifers of importance, and, any water found in them is likely to be too highly mineralized for most purposes.

In the Mohall area, by far the most suitable water for general purposes is obtained from the shallow alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. Of the seven samples of this water water analyzed, the highest concentration of dissolved solids was 1,242 parts per million and the lowest, 317 parts. The iron content was higher than desirable in two samples but satisfactory in all the others. Total hardness ranged from 196 to 570, which is higher than desirable. Nitrate was present in all samples analyzed and was excessively high in two samples.

Water samples for analysis were not obtained from the till and associated glaciofluvial deposits but the water from these aquifers is likely to be more highly mineralized than the water from the alluvial. deposits.

The water from the upper part of the bedrock is highly mineralized, but its mineral content varies considerably. The chloride concentration of the samples analyzed ranges from 608 to 3,740 parts per million and the bicarbonate concentration ranges from 160 to 860 parts per million. The specific conductance ranges from 3,190 to 11,120 micromhos and may represent total mineralization on the order of 1,500 to more than 6,000 parts per million in the water with high chloride and bicarbonate content.

The Baker Valley is the southern part of a small oval-shaped inter-montane structural basin located near tie southeastern edge of the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. The Powder River enters and leaves the valley through narrow rock gorges. The alluviated basin floor at an altitude of about 3,400 feet is bounded by high, Alpine-type mountains on the west and by lover hilly ridges on the north, east, and south. Creeks descend across alluvial fans from the higher western margin of the valley to the Powder River on the valley floor.

The valley floor and the contiguous alluvial slopes are formed of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age having a thickness of more than 700 feet in the central part of the valley. The surrounding higher lands are formed of consolidated rocks composed of volcanic flows, tuffs, and partly consolidated deposits of Tertiary age, and sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic roots of late Paleozoic age. The unconsolidated materials underlying the alluvial slopes are mostly fanglomerates - composed of partly consolidated angular rock fragments imbedded in assorted finer materials - and fine-grained sedimentary deposits having much inter-bedded gravel and sand along the valley floor.

The unconsolidated deposits contain a body of ground water, the upper surface of which is called the water table. The water table slopes down gradient approximately parallel to tile land surface. Variations in the general inclination of that water table indicate that drainage on different segments of the alluvial slope is influent and effluent to the ground water body. Yields from wells in the fanglomerate along the rest side of the valley are not large, but large yields are obtained from wells on the valley floor just north of Baker. Properly constructed test wells have not been drilled over much of the northern part of the valley floor.

The Tertiary rocks of both volcanic and sedimentary origin along the margin of the valley east of Baker contain some ground water under sufficient pressure to cause wells to flow at the surface, but generally those strata are not highly productive. Some water occurring along fault lines in these rocks has all abnormally high temperature.

The growing season in this area is short and the use of shallow water for irrigation may aid materially in securing the maximum returns of which the valley is capable.
