This group is not known to occur south of Panama. It is overlapped in the Isthmian region by the so-called crab-eating raccoons of the subgenus Euprocyon, which range from that northern limit as far south as Paraguay in South America. The raccoons have been greatly reduced in numbers or have disappeared in many formerly wooded sections, owing to clearing and intensive human occupation. Despite adverse conditions, however, they have maintained themselves in many places with remarkable tenacity. Trapping for other fur bearers may have reduced the northern fringe to some extent, but the general range of the group has been little diminished. At the present time raccoons reach their northern limit in regular occurrence on Vancouver Island, B. C.</p>\n<p>The continental forms of the subgenus Procyon constitute a compact assemblage of closely allied geographic races all assignable to Procyon lotor. Complete intergradation is evident in numerous cases and the relative value and combination of characters presented indicate such close relationships that it can safely be assumed where lack of material leaves gaps in the known ranges.</p>\n<p>In the present revision of the raccoons are treated the North American continental species as far as the eastern border of Panama and the species on outlying islands along both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts. Thirty species and subspccics are recognized. Twenty-nine of these are assigned to the subgenus Procyon and one to the subgenus Euproc yon.</p>\n<p>The revision is based mainly on a study of raccoon material in the collection of Biological Surveys, Fish and Wildlife Service, and in other collections in the United States National Museum. These and 358 specimens borrowed from other museums make a total of 1,337 examined. Maximum withdrawals were at the kaolin mining and processing centers in Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington Counties, where water levels have declined as much as 50 ft since 1944-50. In the southern two-thirds of the study area, water levels have shown little, if any, change. Declining water levels and increasing competition for groundwater have caused concern over the adequacy of groundwater supplies. This report defines the areal extent and describes the geohydrology of the Paleocene-Upper Cretaceous aquifers of east-central Georgia, and evaluates the effects of man on the groundwater flow system. Geohydrologic data from four test wells indicate that the aquifers consist of alternating layers of sand and clay that are largely of deltaic origin. In the northern third of the study area, the confining unit between the Dublin and Midville aquifer systems is absent and the aquifer systems combine to form the Dublin-Midville aquifer system. The aquifer systems range in thickness from 80 to 645 ft and their transmissivities range from 800 to 39,000 sq ft/day. The hydraulic conductivity ranges from 15 to 530 ft/day. Wells yield as much as 3,400 gpm (gallons per minute). Chemical analyses of water from 49 wells indicate that water from both aquifer systems is of good quality except in the central part of the study area, where iron concentrations are as high as 6,700 micrograms/L and exceed the 300 micrograms/L recommended limit for drinking water. The principal recharge to the aquifer systems is from precipitation that occurs within and adjacent to the outcrop areas. The principal discharge is to streams in the outcrop area. Precipitation ranges from 34 to 50 inches per year across the outcrop area which is well suited to allow high rates of infiltration. The aquifer contains an estimated 70 ,000,000 acre-feet of water having less than 1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids. The average saturated thickness is 250 feet. Aquifer tests indicate the average transmissivity is 1 ,480 feet squared per day and the average storage coefficient is 0.0005. Large capacity wells tapping the aquifer commonly yield 100 to 500 gallons per minute; the maximum measured yield is 1 ,700 gallons per minute. Water usage from the aquifer is very small owing to an abundance of surface water. Water quality throughout the central and northern part of the aquifer is generally acceptable for municipal use. However, a few wells yield water containing concentrations of iron and manganese exceeding the limit recommended by the National Academy of Science for municipal use.
