Ground-water studies in the Missouri River Basin were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey during the fall of 1945 as a part of the program for development of the resources of the basin by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and other Federal agencies. The studies of the ground-water resources in the part of Kansas that lies within the basin have been coordinated with the cooperative program of ground-water studies already being carried on in Kansas by the Federal Geological Survey and the Kansas State Geological Survey with the cooperation of the Division of Sanitation of the Kansas State Board of health and the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture.

Areas in which ground-water data have been collected under the Missouri Basin program include the Almena Unit in Norton and Phillips Counties; the Bostwick Unit in Jewell, Republic, and Cloud Counties; the Cedar Bluff Unit in Ellis and Trego Counties; the Glen Elder Unit in Mitchell County; the Kanopolis Unit in McPherson and Saline Counties; the Kirwin Unit in Phillips, Smith, and Osborne Counties; the St. Francis Unit in Cheyenne County; the Webster Unit in Osborne County; and the Wilson Unit in Lincoln County.

Most of the ground-water data presented in this report were collected during 1948. Most of the data collected in these areas prior to the end of 1947 were presented in a report mimeographed in September 1948. This report and the previous report are the first two of a series of annual reports on ground-water studies in the Missouri Basin units in Kansas. These reports are a means of more promptly releasing for administrative use the data collected each year. Data for a given area that are included in the annual reports will be assembled later in a report on the geology and hydrology of that area.

The Gonaives Plain lies in northern Haiti at the head of the Gulf of Gonaives. Ground water in the plain is used widely for domestic and stock purposes but only to limited extent for irrigation. The future agricultural development of the plain will depend in large measure on the proper utilization of available ground-water supplies for irrigation.

The rocks in the region of the Gonaives Plain belong to the upper (?) Cretaceous series of the Cretaceous system, the Nocene and Oligovene series of the Tertiary system, and the Pleistocene and Recent series of the Quarternary system. The structural depression occupied by the Gonaives Plain was formed in post-Miocene time by the dislocation of Oligocene and older rocks along normal faults and by the tilting of the adjacent crustal blocks. The lower parts of the depression contain a Pleistocene and Recent alluvial fill deposited by streams tributary to the plain.

The upper (?) Cretaceous rocks include aniesite and basalt lava flows locally intercalated with some beds of tuff and agglomerate. These rocks are generally dense and impervious but locally small springs rise from fractures and bedding planes or from weathered zones.

The Nocene rocks are hard, thin-bedded, cherty limestones with some beds of massive chalky limestone. Considerable ground water circulates through joints, bedding planes, and solution passages in these rocks giving rise to important springs such as Sources Madame Charles. These springs discharge at the rate of about 110 liters per second.

\n
\n

The Oligocene rocks include limestone, shely limestone, limy sandstone, marl, and shale. The limestone beds contain solution passages and other openings and these may afford capacity for the circulation of ground water. However, no wells or springs in Oligocene rocks were observed during the present study.

\n
\n

The alluvial fill of the plain is composed of interbedded lenses of clay, silt, sand, and gravel. These deposits contain a zone of saturation whose upper limit is marked by a water table. The depth to the water table beneath the alluvial lowland of the plain ranges from less than one meter to about 20 meters. In most places in the plain the depth to water is less that 15 meters. Where present in the zone of saturation the coarse, well-sorted sand and gravel beds of the alluvium will probably yield moderate to large supplies of water to wells and infiltration galleries. The individual yields of existing wells range from a few liters to about 60 liters per second.

\n

The most favorable part of the plain for ground-water prospecting and development lies 5 to 10 kilometers northeast of Gonaives. In this area yields of 10 to 50 liters per second could be obtained from the alluvium in simple wells drilled to depths of about 35 to 45 meters. Additional information on the yield and physical character of aquifers in the alluvium would be provided by test wells drilled to depths of 40 to 60 meters.

Following its deposition, the late Pliocene or early Pleistocene Citronelle formation was entrenched by consequent streams and then tilted toward the Gulf. Submergence in waters 190 to 210 feet above present sea level then resulted in a compound shore line and marine erosion of the Coharie terrace. Four other marine terraces occur below the Coharie level: the Sunderland at 150 to 160 feet, the Wicomico at 90 to 110 feet, the Penholoway at 60-70 feet, and the Pamlico at 20 to 30 feet. The Coharie, Penholoway, and Pamlico marine terraces are associated with fluvial or estuarine terraces in the Mobile River Valley. Deformation in the folded Cambrian to Devonian sedimentary rocks of the central Appalachians has been investigated, mainly in the Potomac River Valley. Interpretations of deforming mechanisms are based on the study of folds, rock cleavages, faults, and lineations. An attempt is made to present a kinematic analysis of deformation. Effects of deforming movements, such as preferred orientations, cleavages, small-scale thrusts, and alterations of primary stratigraphic thicknesses are analyzed and correlated. Changes in deformation are related to (1) differences in location within the folded Appalachian belt; (2) different stratigraphic horizons; (3) different positions in given folds; (4) lithological differences. It has been found that: 1. Deformation decreases westward from the South Mountain-Blue Ridge belt. This corroborates the previous findings of Cloos and Fellows; 2. Less competent limestones are deformed farther toward the west than the more competent sandstones. Each formation of differing relative competency has its own tectonite front, and thus, for the succession as a whole, there is a series of tectonite fronts approximately parallel to the western edge of the Appalachian Valley; 3. Distortion of primary thicknesses are correlated with cleavage-bedding angles in separate beds of a given fold in which transverse cleavage is prominent;4. Changes in thickness corresponding to changes in cleavage-bedding angles occur in the less competent rocks west of the Appalachian Valley; they are inferred for the rocks in the Valley;5. Radical changes in thickness often have been caused by bedding-plane slip, interleafing, and piling-up of shales between more competent layers;6. Bedding-plane thrusts cause repetition of individual layers;7. Bedding-plane slip and thrusting parallel to bedding are the predominant modes of distortion west of the Appalachian Valley. © 1950, The Geological Society of America, Inc.

U. S. Geological Survey Party No. 4 mapped the stratigraphy and structure of parts of the Carbon Creek and Ketik anticlines during the summer of 1950. The area, which lies in quadrangles I-19 and I-20 is shown in figure 1. Large-scale maps, compiled from plane-table surveys, give a more detailed picture of two parts of the area, the west plunge of the Carbon Creek anticline (fig. 2) and a segment near the middle of the Ketik anticline (fig. 3).

Location: - This report describes sections of the Lisburne limestone studied in the foothills and northern mountains of the Brooks Range, Alaska. The area covered extends along the front of the range from Sagavanirktok Lake (68°28' N. - 149°25' W.) west to the head of the Kukpowruk River (68°25' N. - 162°40' W.). The southernmost point in the area is at the head of Alapah Creek (68°11' N. - 150°40' W.) and the northernmost point is on Lisburne Ridge just west of the Etivluk River (68°36' N. - 156°40' W.).

Field work was done by the authors at Sagavanirktok Lake, Kanayut Lake, Alapah Creek, the Anaktuvuk and Tiglukpuk Creek, and Chandler Lake. Brief visits were made to the Lisburne Ridge just north and west of the junction of the Nigu and Etivluk Rivers and to outcrops of Lisburne limestone along the Kiligwa River (68°30' N. - 158°35' W.). Data from other areas included in this report were collected by other field parties of the U. S. Geological Survey. A. L. Bowsher, Sr. .and J. T. Dutro, Jr. studied the Lisburne limestone at Kanayut Lake, Nanushuk Lake, and Itkillik Lake in 19491/ .W. W. Patton, Jr. and Irving L. Tailleur described the Lisburne limestone exposed in the northern Brooks Range along the Kiruktagiak River 2/ and the Okokmilage River 3/ in1949, and I. L. Tailleur and Bion H. Kent have supplied data on the Etivluk-Kiligwa Rivers area from their field work of 1950 4/. R. M. Chapman, G. D. Eberlein, and C. D. Reynolds measured sections of Lisburne limestone at Kurupa Lake and on the east fork of the Etivluk River in 1950 5/. E. G. Sable and M. D. Mangus measured the section on Iligluruk Creek near the head of the Kokolik River in 1950 6/,, and Chapman end Sable measured the section at the head of the Kukpowrok River in 1949 7/.

Structural and stratigraphic studies of the rocks in the Siksikpuk and Nanushuk Rivers area were conducted by Navy Oil Unit party No. 2 during the summer field season of 1950. The field party consisted of six men: two geologists; two field assistants; a cook; and a weasel mechanic. Three weasels were used for transportation of equipment and personnel.

The area examined covers approximately 1;000 square miles of the Arctic Foothills province and lies between the Itkillik River on the east and the Chandler River on the west. The area is drained by the Nanushuk, Anaktuvuk, Siksikpuk; and Chandler Rivers.

The mapped area adjoins the Okpikruak and Kiruktagiak Rivers area1/ to the west.

The primary objective of the geologic work in this area was detailed stratigraphic study of pre-Nanushuk group rocks in the Southern Foothills belt as a supplement to the work begun in the Okpikruak and Kiruktagiak Rivers area in 1949. A secondary objective was areal mapping and structural studies for the purpose of delimiting structures favorable for drilling tests of the Lisburne limestone.

Parts of this area had been reconnoitered by members of the U. S. Geological Survey in previous years. In 1901 F. C. Schrader traversed the Anaktuvuk River, In 1945 R. E. Fellows, R. M. Chapman, and C. T. Bressler visited outcrops along the northern margin of the area in the vicinity of the Anaktuvuk River and Kanayut Creek, E. J. Webber and R. L. Detterman examined a few of the cutbanke along the Nanushuk River in 1947 and in 1949. A. L. Bowsher, Sr.; and J, T. Dutro mapped an outlier of Lisburne limestone north of Nanushuk Lake during the 1949 field season.

U. S. Geological Survey Navy Oil Unit Party I examined the surface geology of the area of the upper Utukok River and east fork of the Kokolik River from June 28 to September 3, 1950. The party consisted of six men: E. G. Sable and M. D. Mangus, geologists; C. L. Hummel and F. H. Shannon, field assistants; R. D. Gerard, cook; and L. E. Hall, weasel mechanic. Three weasels were used for transportation in the field.

The area examined approximates 1,000 square miles and is in the extreme southwest corner of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4. It is bounded on the west by Iligluruk Creek (east fork of the Kokolik) and on the east by Driftwood Creek. With the exception of Driftwood Creek, major streams were ascended to their headwaters in the De Long Mountains. A traverse southward over the Utukok-Kugururok Rivers divide was successfully completed, providing a \"tie-in\" with the work of Navy Oil Unit Party 7. Several traverses were made 8 miles north of the Driftwood anticline and to the west fork of the Colville River.

The objectives of this part of the summer's work were (1) the geologic mapping and stratigraphic study of the rocks exposed in this area, and (2) measurement of stratigraphic thicknesses of sediments older than those exposed in the Driftwood anticline. Geology was plotted on vertical and trimetrogon oblique aerial photographs. Altitudes were established by altimeter traverses.

The northern part of this area was previously investigated by members of the Navy Oil Unit. In 1947 R. M. Thompson and W. L. Barksdale1/ visited outcrops along the Utukok River, and in 1949 R. M. Chapman and E. G. Sable2/ examined exposures along the Kokolik River. (See fig. 1, index map.)

The following report presents in tabulated form the location, structure, and stratigraphy of various anticlines in the Maybe Creek area which are presently considered to be reasonably favorable drilling sites, References to mere complete sources of information for each anticline are listed.

The accompanying diagram (Fig. 1) presents a generalized stratigraphic picture of the section that would be penetrated by a hole located on the crest of each of these structures. The zonal thicknesses, as shown in this diagram, are average figures and they probably vary from anticline to anticline within this area as they do elsewhere on the North Slope. The thickness of postulated favorable sands and also the stratigraphic horizon reached by each of the proposed 1,500-foot holes may be further affected by the postulated prezone F unconformity. It seems probable that zone E is essentially absent at Umiat. At the Weasel Creek anticline a total of approximately 1,700 feet of zone E sediments appear to be present. This is probably the complete zone E section. Thus the thickness of zone E sediments m4y vary considerably from place to place within the area west of Umiat covered by this report, and these possible variations are not shown in the diagram (Fig. 1). Interpretations of depth and thickness of favorable sands are based on the facies studies of T. G. Payne1/.

Discussions presented are limited to Nanushuk Group rocks and no reference is made nor inference intended as to possible favorable stratigaphic or structural conditions in the older sedimentary rocks.

In addition to conducting an examination of the surface geology in the Southern Foothills province between the Killik River and east fork of the Etivluk River, Navy Oil Unit Party No. 5 was requested to map the Aupuk anticline during the 1950 field season, for the purpose of evaluating the petroleum possibilities thereof from the standpoints of favorable statigraphy and possible structural closure. Field mapping of the Aupuk anticline began on August 1, and about 1 month was devoted to the study. Party personnel consisted of G. Donald Eberlein and Charles D. Reynolds, geologists, W. L. D'Olier and W. D. Carter, field assistants, Richard Olson, camp cook, and Max H. Davis, weasel mechanic. Robort M. Chapman, geologist, visited the party for 1 week early in August to help start the work and shared, with Eberlein, the responsibilities associated with the final compilation of this report.

Three weasels were used for daily transportation to the field and for moving camp. A 10-foot Link boat equipped with 5 hp. outboard motor was used to cross the Colville River. As field work progressed from west to east it became apparent that the camp equipment and weasels would have to be gotten across the Colville River if field work was to be completed by early September. This crossing was effected without incident at a point approximately 10 miles below the confluence of the Kurupa and Colville Rivers on August 26. The party reached Umiat on September 5.

During the summer of 1949, 12 core tests were drilled in the vicinity of Simpson Seep No. 2 on the east side of the Simpson peninsula. These tests were drilled in an attempt to determine the origin of the Simpson oil seeps and to evaluate the petroleum possibilities of the area. These holes failed to satisfy the objective for which they were drilled, but did define a nearly north-south linear ridge of essentially unconsolidated sand enclosed by a monotonous sequence of clay shale. A gas-bearing horizon and good oil shows were encountered on the crest of the ridge in the vicinity of Seep No. 2 during the 1949 drilling season. In November 1949 the Operating Committee approved the drilling of additional core holes in this area to resolve the complex geologic problems encountered by the shellow drilling of the previous season. Four additional tests had been completed by November 1, 1950, and a fifth is now in progress. Drilling completed thus far in 1950 has resulted in more accurate delineation of the sand ridge, and a flowing oil well has been discovered on the west edge of the ridge near Seep No. 3.

At the direction of Ralph L. Miller, a special study was made of part of the Gubik anticline east of the Colville River. The purpose of this study was two fold; first, the examine the field evidence bearing on east plunge, second, to attempt to establish the continuity of the anticlinal axis from the Colville River to the Anaktuvuk River. The results of this study and a summary of results of the study of part of the anticline west of the Colville River by Stefansson and Thurrell 1/ are presented below.

The porphyritic to seriate-textured quartz monzonite host-rock at Bagdad was changed by hypogene alteration to a granular rock in which the plagioclase became albitic, orthoclase and quartz increased in amount, and hornblende and book-biotite were recrystallized to pale brown leafy biotite. Hypogene sulfides, pyrite and chalcopyrite, were added during the process of alteration, accompanied in part by sericite. Molybdenite is younger than the chalcopyrite. Locally, the host rock was altered to a quartz-orthoclase-sericite facies containing more quartz and orthoclase than is found in the main alteration facies. Chemical analyses indicate that alteration and mineralization of the host rock resulted in loss of iron, lime, and soda, and addition of sulfur, copper, and potash.Supergene changes include the formation of a chalcocite blanket in late Pliocene or early Pleistocene time. Chalcocite replaced chalcopyrite in preference to pyrite. The chalcocite blanket is truncated by the present erosion surface and its distribution can be recognized from the character of the iron oxide left in the leached cavities. Along some of the fractures and faults, supergene clay is present, consisting of kaolinite and a member of the saponite-montmorillonite group.
