One is the frequency of recurrence for the observed distributions, and the other is the corresponding frequency of recurrence for the theoretical distributions of best‐fit. The former is usually required for the purpose of plotting observed data, and hence is called the “plotting positions,” a term used by Foster [1934, p. 1217]. The published fact that uranium is already being recovered on a laboratory scale from Swedish deposits forcefully suggests that similar deposits in the United States and possibly many other countries may prove to be an important future source of uranium.The marine uranium-bearing black shales are rich in organic matter and sulfides and contain little or no carbonate. The best are found in relatively thin formations of pre-Mesozoic age. The nature of the uranium-bearing mineral or compound is not known. In contrast, nonmarine black shales, as a group, are not uraniferous.All marine phosphorites tested thus far are uraniferous and so too are the phosphatic nodules found in many marine black shales. With some exceptions, the uranium increases in a general way with increase in phosphate content and is believed to be in the phosphate mineral. Like the black shales, the phosphorite formations are characteristically thin; many are associated with unconformities or, in other words, periods during which little else in the way of sediment accumulated.Significant concentrations of uranium in marine sediments other than black shales and phosphorites are thus far known only in beach placer deposits and the gold-bearing conglomerates of the Witwatersrand district, South Africa.Uranium may be found in other types of marine sediments on further prospecting, but especially promising are the sediments rich in organic matter, phosphate, or both, found in relatively thin formations believed to be the entire depositional products of long periods of geologic time. Such formations are most characteristic of those areas where, at the time of deposition, the adjacent land masses were so stable and low that the influx of clastic materials was small; the basin of deposition was large or of such configuration that fine-grained sediments could accumulate; and chemical conditions in the seawater prevented deposition of large amounts of carbonate.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.45.1.35","usgsCitation":"McKelvey, V., and Nelson, J.M., 1950, Characteristics of marine uranium-bearing sedimentary rocks: Economic Geology, v. 45, no. 1, p. 35-53, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.45.1.35.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"35","endPage":"53","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":379550,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"45","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1950-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKelvey, Vincent E.","contributorId":106637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKelvey","given":"Vincent E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":802227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nelson, John Marshall","contributorId":17323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"Marshall","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":802228,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

No domestic pegmatites have been found that are rich enough to support an economic mining operation for uranium alone; however, small quantities of uranium minerals may be recovered as by-products of feldspar or mica mining. Madagascar is the only country that has produced appreciable tonnages of uranium minerals from pegmatites.A review of the literature and observations in the domestic pegmatite districts show that the uranium and rare earth minerals generally occur in pegmatites or pegmatite units rich in potash feldspar. Recent mineralogical and structural studies of pegmatites by the U. S. Geological Survey indicate that, on the basis of geologic mapping, these units can be projected laterally and in depth with reasonable accuracy. The deposits are largely restricted to a few stratigraphic zones, along which they have a wide but spotty areal distribution. The ore minerals mainly impregnate sandstone, though in places fossil plants are richly mineralized. Most of the ore bodies are small, but have a wide range in size, and within individual deposits the ore has a considerable range in thickness and grade. The deposits are irregularly tabular or lenticular, with their long axes nearly parallel to the bedding, but the ore does not follow the beds in detail.The ore is thought to have been precipitated from ground-water solutions after the enclosing sands had accumulated and before regional deformation. Sedimentary structures that seem to have controlled the movement of these solutions and the features that probably localized the ore deposits are described, and their application as guides to ore finding is explained.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.45.1.1","usgsCitation":"Fischer, R.P., 1950, Uranium-bearing sandstone deposits of the Colorado Plateau: Economic Geology, v. 45, no. 1, p. 1-11, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.45.1.1.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":379437,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Utah, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Colorado Plateau","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.97265625,\n              38.048091067457236\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.69970703125,\n              38.048091067457236\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.69970703125,\n              42.97250158602597\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.97265625,\n              42.97250158602597\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.97265625,\n              38.048091067457236\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"45","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1950-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fischer, Richard Philip","contributorId":94283,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fischer","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"Philip","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":801845,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Anticipating the end of his two‐year period of observation at Parícutin in December 1948, Wilcox instructed the junior author, a native Tarascan from the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro, now destroyed, in the processes of keeping detailed diagrammatic records of eruptive activity, of making weather observations, and of outlining the monthly advance of the new lava. On Wilcox's departure the senior author, who had closely followed the series of studies at Paricutin and had frequently visited the Volcano from June 1943 onward, took up the task‐of watching over Paricutin and preparing reports on its activity. During the first six months of 1949 he spent 11 days at the Volcano on the following dates: January 25–28, March 29–April 1, and May 18–20. On these visits he checked the elevations of the chief points on the rim of tie cone, using an alidade at known stations, and in addition followed the growth of the lava‐vent mound, variations in the form of the interior of the crater, and any other features that showed change. Further, he discussed with the junior author, the Volcano's activity during the periods between visits and assembled the observational data for formal presentation.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR031i003p00406","usgsCitation":"Fries, C., and Gutierrez, C., 1950, Activity Of Paricutin Volcano From August 1, 1948 to June 30, 1949: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 31, no. 3, p. 406-418, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR031i003p00406.","productDescription":"13p.","startPage":"406","endPage":"418","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":379427,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico","state":"Michoacan","otherGeospatial":"Paricutin Volcano","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -102.45849609375,\n              19.264479800497103\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.16735839843749,\n              19.264479800497103\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.16735839843749,\n              19.590844152960923\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.45849609375,\n              19.590844152960923\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.45849609375,\n              19.264479800497103\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"31","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fries, Carl Jr.","contributorId":86396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fries","given":"Carl","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":801832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gutierrez, Celedonio","contributorId":243225,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gutierrez","given":"Celedonio","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":801833,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

They indicate one way to analyze and conveniently use the vast accumulation of stream‐flow records collected by governmental agencies as a tool for geophysical reconnaisance. To be usable as a method of geophysical prospecting for ground water, stream‐flow records must first be transformed into flow‐duration curves. Then, by means of the 90 per cent index, chosen by Cross, or other, more suitable indices, the ground‐water storage characteristics of the surficial deposits of drainage basins can readily be determined. A new River Forecast Center was inaugurated at Portland, Oregon in January, 1950 to provide service for the Columbia River Basin and adjacent coastal areas. The first custom‐made model of the electronic flood routing machine has been delivered and is being tested to determine its electrical and operating characteristics. A large portion of the Bureau's investigations during the year were aimed at developing to the fullest all possible applications of existing techniques but considerable effort was devoted to the problem of developing new methods for short‐range forecasting of runoff from melting snow. A technique has been developed which appears to satisfy the requirements but it has not yet been adequately tested. Water supply forecasting activities were continued and the number of forecast points increased to about 300. But these water-level readings, if not properly understood or weighted, may be entirely misleading. This is because water levels are neither stationary nor steadily rising (with recharge) or falling (with discharge). Water levels fluctuate as a result of several factors other than those of changes in recharge or discharge, chief among which are: (1) tides; (2) atmospheric pressure; (3) winds; (4) earthquakes; and (5) passing trains. Characteristically, artesian aquifers respond to these forces in a manner different from that of nonartesian aquifers, but in some places local geologic conditions in a nonartesian aquifer may cause water-level fluctuations ordinarily found only in artesian wells. Among the unusual features observed is a 4.5-foot fluctuation of water level in a Miami well caused by earthquake waves originating 750 miles away in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of the Dominican Republic. This virgin deposit has a small outcrop and seems ideally suited for a geochemical study of the dispersion pattern produced by weathering in a desert climate. Samples of soils, alluvium, ground water, and vegetation were analyzed for copper. To avoid grinding, to accentuate differences in copper concentration, and to decrease sampling error, sampling was confined to the silt and clay fraction of the soil and alluvium. A sensitive field test for copper, using hydrochloric acid for a digestant and dithizone for copper determination, proved both quick and reliable.

The results of the study show that at present little copper from the ore body dissolves in the ground water or runoff, and also that very little is taken up by plants growing on the ore outcrop. For this reason, prospecting for similar deposits by the sampling and analysis of ground water or vegetation is unlikely to be fruitful. A study of plant ecology, however, shows that certain plant species grow preferentially on outcrops of copper ore and may be useful as indicators of ore.

Chrysocolla along joints carries most of the copper in the oxidized zone. The chrysocolla is slowly disintegrated mechanically as the rock weathers and enters the fine fraction of the soil. Slope wash and soil creep carry the copper along with the other soil materials into the nearby washes, where they are incorporated in the alluvium and swept downstream during floods. Abrasion probably continues to concentrate the copper in the fines, but the net change downstream is a decrease in copper content caused by dilution.

As copper can now be readily determined by chemical analysis in the field, analysis of soil and alluvium seems to be one of the best geochemical methods of prospecting for copper in a desert environment. A thirty acre area in well drained bottomland forest on the flood plain of the Patuxent River was selected for intensive study.  Similarly forested land extended in all directions from the study plot.      Markers were established at eighty-three foot intervals over the study plot for reference in recording locality data.  Individuals were marked by filing notches in the marginal scutes according to a code system.  There were 2109 collections of study area turtles.      Records of collecting sites and turtle behavior showed that in the bottomlands habitat cover is utilized extensively during the day as well as at night. Turtles not actively moving about are almost always found in or around brush piles, heaps of debris, and tangles of vines and briars. Gully banks and woods openings are used for sunning. Turtles are occasionally found in the mud or water of the gullies.      The commonest type of night retreat is a cavity constructed by the turtle in leaves, debris, or earth. These cavities, termed 'forms,' may be used only once, but are sometimes used repeatedly, often at intervals of several days or more. Different turtles sometimes use the same form on successive nights.      Weather conditions most favorable to turtle activity are high humidity, warm sunny days, and frequent rains. The most unfavorable influences are low temperatures and drought. On most summer days there are some active turtles but individual turtles are not active every day. Periods of activity are alternated with periods of quiet even in favorable weather. This behavior is most pronounced in early spring and late fall when inactive days are often more numerous than active ones.      Adult turtles occupy specific home ranges which they maintain from year to year. The turtles living in the study plot retained their ranges even through a flood that completely covered the area.      Maximum home range diameters were determined by measurements of the mapped ranges of individual turtles. The average range of adult males was 330 feet, adult females 370 feet. The difference between male and female ranges was not statistically significant.      There was no evidence of defense of territory.  Ranges of turtles of all ages and both sexes overlapped grossly. Turtles were frequently found near each other and no antagonistic behavior was observed.      A trail-laying device was developed in order to follow individual travel routes. The trailer consists of a light weight housing fastened to the turtle's back. It contains a spool of white thread that unwinds as the turtle moves, thus marking its exact route.      Turtles selected for this more detailed study were followed with trailers for a total of 456 turtle days. Maps illustrating their travels are shown. Normal movements within the home range are characterized by, (1) turns, doublings, detours, and criss-crossing paths completely covering the area, (2) interspersion of fairly direct traverses of the home range, (3) frequently repeated travels over certain paths or routes.      Trailer records and mapped collection records both show that the maximum limits of the home range are ordinarily reached within a few days or weeks. This general procedure is varied by some turtles to include intensive coverage of only one portion of the range at a time.      Some turtles have two home ranges and travel between them at infrequent intervals. One turtle showing this behavior was followed with a trailer for 161 days during 1946 and 1947.      Trips outside the home range are made by some turtles. These include egg laying trips by females as well as trips of unexplained nature made by both males and females. Turtles from other areas occasionally occur as transients in the study plot.      The size of the population was estimated on the basis of collections during on","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.2307/1943570","usgsCitation":"Stickel, L.F., 1950, Populations and home range relationships of the box turtle, Terrapene c. carolina (Linnaeus): Ecological Monographs, v. 20, no. 4, p. 351-378, https://doi.org/10.2307/1943570.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"351","endPage":"378","numberOfPages":"28","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199905,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"20","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db69689c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stickel, Lucille F.","contributorId":76598,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stickel","given":"Lucille","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":338054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
