Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report presents the results of a mineral survey of the&nbsp;Cheat Mountain Roadless Area in the Monongahela National Forest,&nbsp;Randolph County, West Virginia. The area was designated as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Cheat Mountain Roadless Area is in the Greenbrier Ranger District of the&nbsp;Monongahela National Forest, east-central West Virginia. It is located in Randolph County about 10 mi southeast of Elkins, W.Va., and is accessible there via U.S. 219-250 to Beverly, W.Va., and then southeastward along an improved country road. From the east, the study area can be reached via U.S. 33 and by a paved country road that extends from Alpena, W.Va. to the village of Bemis. Unimproved Forest service roads, abandoned logging railroad grades, and primitive trails provide access by foot or horseback into the interior of the study area.</p>\n<p>Physiographically, the&nbsp;Cheat Mountain Roadless Area is in the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateaus province and is situated at the eastern edge of the Appalachian coal region. Cheat Mountain, a northeast-trending ridge, is bordered on the west by the right fork of Files Creek and on the east by Shavers Fork and its tributaries. Most of the area occupies an elevated plateau capped by resistant sandstone and conglomerate. Altitudes range form 2,320 ft on Lime Kiln Run to more than 3,900 ft on Cheat Mountain. The topography ranges from relatively flat in the uplands to very steep in the canyons along tributaries of Shavers Fork. The area is heavily forested with vegetation varying from mixed hardwoods on the western slope of Cheat Mountain to thickets of conifers in the uplands. Hemlocks are sparsely interspersed and red spruce, the dominant tree at higher elevations prior to logging in the mid 1920's, is again reforesting upland areas. of South Dakota","docAbstract":"<p><span>The earthquake data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are a list of earthquakes that were originally used in preparing the Seismic Risk Studies in the United States in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. &nbsp;These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for 10 km wide in northwestern Moore County, N.C. &nbsp;At least 2540 oz. of gold were recovered from 16 or more mines and prospects between 1880 and 1910. &nbsp;One hundred and ninety rock samples out of 244 collected from old gold mines, pyrophyllite deposits and along roads contain gold quantities ranging from 0.02 to 2.4 parts per million. &nbsp;In addition, 43 samples out of the 244 taken contain In February 1975, after being shown evidence of recent faulting in the vicinity of Ukiah by E. C. Winterhalder, Principal Engineering Geologist for Harding - Lawson Associates, Pampeyan extended the study area northward to the vicinity of Willits . After the Willits earthquake of November 22, 1977 (Simon and others, 1978; Warren and others, 1979), field investigations in the epicentral area revealed a series of distressed pavements, curbs, and sidewalks all showing right-lateral offset (Harsh and others, 1978; 1981). These features traverse the city of Willits and define a line coincident with a photolineament extending southeastward from Willits. Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the Administration and the Congress. These maps and reports present the results of a geological and mineral survey of the Baker-Cypress BLM Instant Study Area and Timbered Crater Forest Service Further Planning (RARE II) areas.</p><p>The study areas have no potential for metallic commodities as determined from spectrographic analyses of rocks (Peterson, 1980). Several localities within the study areas, however, contain stone that can be used for decorative purposes in building construction . of Kansas","docAbstract":"<p><span>The earthquake data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are a list of earthquakes that were originally used in preparing the Seismic Risk Studies in the United States in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. &nbsp;These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for ones that occurred</span><span>&nbsp;before seismic instruments were in universal usage.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
