These rocks have the property generally known as sheet structure. Major parting planes resulting from sheeting are usually sub-parallel to the rock surface on hills and in valleys and consequently control the circulation of subsurface water. Imperfect shallow pseudosynclinal basins formed by sheet planes in valleys are the receptacles for much subsurface water that percolates along these planes from nearby upland slopes. Therefore, wells drilled in lowlands in sheeted terranes almost invariably produce greater quantities of water than those on the uplands.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society of A small sample of soil is fused with potassium bisulfate, the fused mass dissolved in water, buffered at pH 4 to 5.5 with acetate buffer, and sodium thiosulfate added to form complex ions with metals that might cause interference. Measured increments of the sample solution are added to a carbon-tetrachloride-dithizone solution, with vigorous shaking after each addition, until a standard color is obtained in the organic phase. The usual conception of paleobotany is not as broad as this, and many of the studies of fossil plants have been conducted without reference to the part the plant materials assume in composing coal. The interrelationship of paleobotany with the physical constitution and petrography of coal is an intimate one. which is too involved for treatment in the present paper. Chief emphasis is devoted to review of plant microfossil investigations during the past several years. The consistent abundance of plant microfossils in coal and its associated rocks is now generally recognized. One of the greatest difficulties in using this material for correlation and for extending our knowledge of the plant composition of coal has been in systematic (taxonomic) treatment of the materials. The reviews of recent literature are presented chiefly with reference to the diverse systematic approaches of various authors. The contrast between essentially nonbotanical or morphologic classification schemes, which are simpler to apply and which may serve adequately for local correlational studies, and those studies conceived on a more fundamental basis of plant taxonomy, for paleogeographic and ecologic interpretation of botanically related groups, is presented. Both viewpoints should be kept clearly in mind, since differing circumstances of study and differing objectives may suggest the advisability of using one rather than the other method of systematic treatment of these fossils. Approximately 1.000 drill and outcrop samples have been studied. In order to relate the materiel here presented to the regional geologic picture of the central area, the restored facies cross-sections A-A' and B-B' of T.G. Payne 1/ are used as a basis for the graphic presentation of the heavy mineral zonation. Section C-C' of Payne is not used because most of it lies outside the area treated in this report and because of new geological and geophysical interpretations in the Barrow area as the result of recent exploration. The work has shown that many of the important features, both above and below sea level, are definitely related to the direction of the prevailing winds, waves, and currents. Beyond the windward (north and east) reefs of Bikini, the steep outer slope is broken in most places by a terrace at ten fathoms. The margin of the windward reef is a Lithothamnion ridge, cut by strong grooves or surge channels; large islands are developed on these reefs. Lee reefs have nearly vertical outer slopes near the surface; their margins are smooth and are adapted to light surf; occasional storms have eroded large slump areas; and islands are small and few. Passes are largely confined to the southern reefs. The lagoons studied are 25 to 35 fathoms deep and are bordered by a ten‐fathom terrace. The floors are covered with living Halimeda and algal debris surrounded by a belt of foraminiferal and coral sand. Steep coral knolls, some rising nearly to sea level, are scattered in the lagoons. Many flat‐topped seamounts are present in the area. The 14 that were well surveyed rise from 2500 fathoms to depths between 470 and 850 fathoms. ©1949. American Geophysical Union.
