This area is included in the 2,500,000-acre </span><span>Missouri-Souris and Garrison Diversion irrigation projects,which are im</span><span>portant units in the general plans for development of the water resources </span><span>of the Missouri River Basin. Although the Crosby-Mohall area lies outside </span><span>the drainage basin of the Missouri River, plans have been made for the </span><span>irrigation of about 1,000,0)0 acres (equivalent to 1,560 square miles) of </span><span>the most suitable land, with water brought by canal from the Missouri River </span><span>in Montana. </span></p><p><span>The studies that have been undertaken in the area by the Division of Ground Water&nbsp;of the United States Geological Survey form a part of the investigations which have been initiated by the Survey and several other bureaus of the Department of the Interior, especially the Bureau of Reclamation. The studies on which the present report is bas2 were made during the field seasons of 1945, 1946 and 1947, to obtain information on the occurrence, movement, quantity, and quality of the ground water. The report contains data on the several kinds of water-bearing materials, water analyses, and well logs; the records of fluctuation of water level in about 400 wells; and an inventory of 4,636 wells and test holes. </span></p><p><span>Later studies for the whole of the Missouri-Souris Unit will supply additional data on ground-water levels and piezometric surfaces, more extensive information on quality of water, a complete inventory of wells, and further geologic information relating to ground-water supplies. The SHADA Forest Division headquarters near the eastern end of the region is about 98 kilometers by road from Port-au-Prince.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In early February 1949 the writers made a brief geologic study of the region to determine the feasibility of drilling wells to obtain water for domestic, stock and small-scale industrial use. Existing water supplies are very scanty and undependable. There are no wells in the region, and springs are notably scarce and widely separated. Water supplies are now obtained principally from rain-water catchments or from roof-tops. Most of the agricultural produce consumed in Port-au-Prince as well as a considerable part of that exported from Haiti is grown in the plain.</p><p>Because of variable and poorly distributed rainfall, high temperature, and high evaporation, semiarid climatic conditions prevail in the plain. Irrigation is, therefore, necessary for successful farming. There are no regulatory or storage facilities on the streams that enter the plain, but the mean and low-water stream flow and the discharge of springs are almost entirely appropriated for irrigation. Ground water has been utilized for irrigation to an increasing extent by the Haitian American Sugar Company, which has put down about 100 wells in the plain since 1919.</p><p>Outside the existing irrigated areas of the plain are large tracts of potentially irrigable land that are uncultivated and agriculturally unproductive for lack of water. The object of the present study was to determine the possibilities of bringing these lands into cultivation by irrigation from wells. This study was part of a larger program of the Food Supply Division, Institute of Inter-American Affairs, to increase the production of food in Haiti.</p><p>From September through November 1948 the senior author, a member of the U. S. Geological Survey, spent three months in the field in an investigation of the geology and ground-water resources of the Cul-de-Sac Plain. He was ably assisted by Mr. Rémy C. Lemoine, Haitian engineer-geologist, employed by the Food Supply Division. They are in two long tabular masses of peridotite which lie end to end and trend northnorthwest across the valley of the Klamath River. The Seiad Creek-Red Butte mass extends 10 miles north of the river and the Hamburg-McGuffy Creek mass 8 miles south. The outcrops of both are from 1 to 2 miles wide. The rocks that bound the peridotite on the east are thoroughly reconstructed schist and those bordering it to the west are less-metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The schists have been considered to be pre-Cambrian age, whereas the rocks to the west are probably of early Triassic age.</p><p>Strictly speaking, the chromite-bearing masses are complex bodies of ultramafic rock consisting mainly of dunite but also containing saxonite, lherzolite, pyroxeni,te and hornblendite (listed in order of abundance). Only the dunite contains chromite ore.</p><p>The tabular peridotite masses lie parallel to planar structures in the older rocks, but in their internal make-up no large- scale structural pattern has been recognized. The most con- spicuous internal structure is the linear arrangement of the chromite-rich schlieren in the ore-bearing parts of the peri- dotite. A typical ore body may include parts made up of evenly disseminated chromite; the richest and largest bodies, however, are made up of concentrated, closely spaced chromite schlieren of different size, shape, and richness. Some schlieren contain 80 to 95 percent of chromite, but most of them contain 25 percent or less, and the ore must be concentrated to yield a marketable product.</p><p>Chromite is composed of chromic oxide, alumina, ferric oxide, ferrous oxide, and magnesia in different proportions. Hence the ~bromic-oxide content of pure chromites differ. It is consistently high for the chromite from this area as it ranges from 55 to 58 percent. The iron content is likewise consistently high, ranging from 14 to 21 percent.</p><p>The total reserves of indicated and inferred ore as of May 1945 were 274,500 short tons, which would average 8 percent Cr<sub>2</sub><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">O</span><sub>3</sub>. The Seiad Creek mine (Mountain View group) contained the largest deposit; reserves amounted to 212,000 short tons. The McGuffy Creek mine contained 50,000 short tons of indicated and inferred ore.
