This report is concerned primarily with the land-pebble deposits, the only type which contains a significant amount of uranium. The most productive part of the land-pebble district is in Polk and Hillsborough Counties,\nin the west-central part of the Florida peninsula.
\nPhosphate occurs in both the Hawthorn formation of lower\nmiddle Miocene age and the Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age. The\nphosphate in the Bone Valley is generally of higher grade, probably as\nthe result of mechanical reworking and further precipitation during\nsubmergence in Pliocene time. In a few places, leached parts of the\nHawthorn formation are also of minable grade. , Pleistocene terrace\ndeposits and beach sands unconformably overlie the Bone Valley.
\nIn Polk and Hillsborough Counties, the high-grade part of the\nland-pebble phosphate district, uranium occurs principally in the Bone\nValley formation and is concentrated in the upper part of the formation,\nwhich has been leached by ground water. The maximum tenor found\nto date is 0.1 percent uranium. The basal member of the Bone Valley\nhas a maximum grade of .02 percent uranium, and averages about .01\npercent uranium. Fresh, unweathered Hawthorn formation has little or\nno uranium, but leached Hawthorn, rich in P2O5, contains a maximum of\n0.01 percent uranium. The Pleistocene sands have no uranium except\nwhere they contain reworked phosphatic material from the Bone Valley\nformation.
\nSouth of the high- grade district, in Manatee and Hardee\nCounties, the Bone Valley, Hawthorn, and Pleistocene formations contain\nonly very minor amounts of uranium.
\nThe uranium in the land-pebble deposits was probably syngenetic\nin origin. Subsequent leaching of soluble material has resulted in\nresidual enrichment of uranium. The uranium seems to be associated with\nthe phosphate mineral.

A report on the photogeology of the Driftwood anticline, based on available air photos, has already been distributed. The present report considers the geology of the Carbon Creek and Awuna anticlines.
The central part of the Carbon Creek anticline was studied in the field by party No. 2 during the 1949 season. A geologic report on this part of the anticline, by C. L. Whittington and Samuel A. Keller, will be distributed at the November meeting. The present photogeologic report covers the part of the Carbon Creek anticline from the western end of Whittington and Keller's area westward to the point where the Carbon Creek anticline plunges and disappears. A photogeologic map (fig. 1) accompanies this report and incorporates all available data both from the aerial photographs and from earlier field geologic studies of a part of the anticline by Thompson and Barksdale.
The Awuna anticline has been mapped in the field by C. L. Whittington. A field geologic map of the anticline will be distributed at the November meeting. The discussion on the Awuna anticline in the present report is based in part on the field observations of Whittington and in part on a new study of the aerial photographs which had previously been studied by Whittington. In reading this section on the Awuna anticline, reference should be made to Whittington's geologic map, which will be available at the November meeting.
At the present time, only trimetrogon photography is available for study of the western part of Carbon Creek and the Awuna anticline areas. Hence quantitative analysis of the structures is not possible, although rough estimates of the amount of plunge and of closures can be made. Accurate calculations of closure and plunge by photogrammetric methods must await the arrival of the vertical photographs of the area

The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.

The investigation is concerned with the author's expedition to Martinique and St. Vincent in 1902 and comparison of the experience of investigators and sufferers with that of others in so-called \"explosive\" eruptions. The Hawaiian mechanism is reviewed with special reference to rifts, underground water, intrusion furnace, wedge rupture, and lowering of magma. These features of structure are applied to Martinique, St. Vincent, Kilauea, Tarawera, Sakurajima, Katmai, Taal and Tomboro as a series of steam blasts old and new. The comparison is found to be applicable and the analogy with Hawaii considered as fundamentally magmatic for gas and basaltic slag, brings out the contrast that lies in steam eruptions. For all volcanoes they are believed features of ground water and of collapse. Ground water stimulates lava eruptions.
The Pelée disaster at St. Pierre May 8, 1902, followed by a dacite dome with spines, which renewed activity in 1929, is examined for paroxysms of downblast. These are distinguished sharply from the Carib migratory upblasts along valley fissures which are not uncommon elsewhere. The valleys are on rifts recognized as deep fumaroles. The Ghyben-Herzberg laws of ground water are applicable. Geyser rhythm was followed by Pelée, Soufriére of St. Vincent, and Kilauea in their sequence of paroxysms. Structure sections are drawn to scale, and the structural reactions of intrusion, rifts, boiler, gas effervescence, heat, and timing are thus outlined. The bearing of this machinery on volcanism in general, on world ignisepta and on reaction of magma is suggested. It is contended that steamblast is a climax of eruption in the water zone and should be sharply delimited from the rising and intrusion of fundamental earth magma, and from the high pressure water reactions of ocean bottoms. Rising magma is considered an age-long elevatory force along volcanic lines, modified by cyclical yielding. Compared with oceanic volcanism continental irruption in sediments is a separate science in experimental field geophysics. Every locality supramarine or submarine of warm ground and steep thermal gradient is a subject for volcanology, if pulsating ground water is critically, thermally and chemically measured.
