To determine the effect of sulfamerazine treatment on growth and to learn whether the drug injures various trout species, brook trout and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) were tested in 1946 and brown trout (Salmo trutta) in 1947. The daily dosage rates chosen were 0, 5, 10, and 15 grams of the drug per 100 pounds of fish (0, 11, 22, 33 grams per 100 kilograms).
It was observed from this experiment that: (1) sulfamerazine was not lethal; (2) the drug had no apparent injurious effect; (3) retardation of growth was caused by reduced consumption of food containing the drug; (4) there was great variation among the three species of trout in their response to sulfamerazine, e.g., the growth of rainbow trout was not affected, growth of brook trout was reduced by heavier dosage rates, and growth of brown trout was stopped by 5‐gram or greater dosage rates; (5) hemoglobin and number of erythrocytes increased in brown trout treated with sulfamerazine in the food; (6) a very small dosage, begun in time, appears to be sufficient to control furunculosis in brown trout.

Une telle solution devient possible lorsque l'échelle de l'image plastique (modèle) est au moins 7 fois plus grande que celle des clichés. L'appareil comprend un support reposant par 4 pieds sur la table à dessin. Sa partie supérieure porte, par l'intermédiaire de trois vis calantes, un cadre dans lequel les deux chambres de projection sont suspendues. Des leviers de commande, agissant sur les chambres, permettent d'introduire la base, le déversement et les inclinaisons transversale et longitudinale. Les clichés conjugués ou des diapositifs sont directement placés dans les chambres de projection munies d'objectifs. En projetant les deux clichés au moyen de couleurs complémentaires, l'observateur — muni de lunettes à verres colorés (couleurs complémentaires) — observe l'image plastique audessus de la table à dessin, l'orientation relative des chambres ayant été établie au préalable. Pour le report des points de l'image plastique sur la minute, l'opérateur dispose d'une tablette amovible à marque-repère lumineuse qu'il déplace à la main et dont la hauteur au-dessus de la table à dessin peut être commandée par une molette. Pour établir l'orientation absolue de l'image plastique, il suffit d'incliner convenablement le cadre de suspension à l'aide des vis calantes, l'orientation relative n'étant pas détruite par cette opération.
Les deux clichés sont éclairés par des projecteurs munis d'une suspension à la cardan et reliés à la tablette de restitution par des tiges télescopiques. Moyennant ce dispositif, l'éclairage est concentré sur deux petites régions conjuguées des clichés et l'observateur ne voit ainsi qu'une petite partie de l'image spatiale, ce qui présente l'avantage de ne pas l'éblouir.
D'autre part, les tiges télescopiques impriment, suivant l'inclinaison, un déplacement vertical plus ou moins prononcé aux objectifs de projection, ce qui permet d'éliminer les erreurs de distorsion.
Pour les travaux de triangulation aérienne, l'auteur propose d'appliquer la méthode des plaques à fontes radiales (templets). Pour le passage d'un modèle à l'autre, l'orientation spatiale des chambres de restitution est déterminée au moyen d'une nivelle placée sur les clichés. Un premier essai a été effectué sur 7 modèles (échelle des clichés 1/34000) et après compensation l'erreur probable altimétrique des douze points connus s'est élevée à 1.50 m tandis que l'erreur maximum était de 4 m.
L'erreur altimétrique des restitutions effectuées par le U.S. Forest Service en Californie avec des clichés ou 1/48000, où les différences de niveau dépassaient parfois 600 m par cliché, varie entre 1 m et 2.70 m.

On the other hand no direct evidence was found of the development of bauxite from kaolin. These facts have led us to reconsider the genetic relations of bauxite and kaolin.
We do not mean to deny that there has been direct kaolinization of the nepheline syenite; but in view of the above observations and of the character of the kaolin derived from bauxite, we believe that the relations of bauxite and kaolin in the Arkansas deposits are more readily explained on the assumption that the bauxite is derived directly from the nepheline syenite, rather than from kaolinized nepheline syenite. The silica causing its subsequent kaolinization may be derived from overlying sediments or from remnants of unbauxitized nepheline syenite within or adjacent to it
.Our conclusions about the relations of the kaolinized and bauxitized nepheline syenite are based entirely on rock weathered in place.

The use of copper sulphate is not without danger because of variation in toxicity according to the hardness of the particular water supply; also, the toxicity and efficacy of Roccal have varied considerably in different lots. Neither copper sulphate nor Roccal will cure in one treatcent a well-established epizootic of bacterial gill disease. For these reasons, a series of new disinfectants has been tested in the laboratory in an attempt to find a more effective cure and preventive for bacterial Eill disease. One of these tested, pyridylmercuric acetate, was suggested by Wan Horn and Katz (1946).

The construction or Grand Coulee Dam, on the upper Columbia River, involved the loss of 1,140 lineal miles of spawning and rearing stream to the production of anadromous fishes. The fact that the annual value of these fish runs to the nation was estimated at $250,000 justified reasonable expenditures to assure their perpetuation. It was found economically infeasible to safely collect and pass adult fish upstream and fingerling fish downstream at the dam because of the tremendous flow of the river and the 320 foot vertical difference in elevation between forebay and tailrace.
The Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project, undertaken by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in 1939, consisted in relocating the anadroumous runs of the upper Columbia River to four major tributaries entering below the Grand Coulee damsite. These streams were believed capable of supporting several times their existing, badly depleted, run.
The plan was predicated upon the assumption that the relocated runs, in conformity with their \"homing tendency\", would return to the lower tributaries rather than attempt to reach their ancestral spawning grounds above Grand Coulee Dam.
This interim report covers the history and accomplishments of the Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project through the initial period of relocating the rune as well as the first four years of the permanent program.
Results obtained to date indicate conclusive success in diverting the upper Columbia fish runs into the accessible lower tributaries. The results also indicate, less conclusively, that - in spite of many existing handicaps - the upper Columbia salmon and steelhead runs may be rehabilitated through the integrated program of natural and artificial propagation incorporated in the Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project.

During that year, one brood came closer to extinction than was realized by more than a few individuals. The immediate causes were not overfishing, hydroelectric power development, or irrigation—although these factors continued to exert their long-standing effects. The direct causes can be attributed to an “act of God” plus—in large measure--lack of knowledge concerning the basic principles of effective artificial propagation. With the security and assurance provided by subsequent developments, those concerned with the Columbia River blueback salmon may be interested in a brief recapitulation of events that transpired during the early 1940s. This particular piece of fishery history bears upon the problems of the immediate future on the Columbia River.

S. Fish Cultural Station, Leavenworth, Washington, has been supplemented with two wells that were to be used to increase the temperature of the water during the winter and to cool the Water in the summer if necessary. The well water proved to be unsuitable for hatchery purposes because it was supersaturated with nitrogen, causing \"gas-bubble\" disease among fish subjected to 11. Mr. R. E. Burrows, the district biologist at the Leavenworth laboratory, devised a system by which the water from one well could be used satisfactorily in the hatchery after a circuitous routing through a mixing chamber with considerable agitation and a settling basin. The circuitous routing precluded the use of the rearing ponds, and it did not sufficiently reduce the nitrogen tension of the water from the other well.

S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin. Pumping tests on wells that yield water from the Ordovician and Cambrian sandstones underlying the Milwaukee-Waukesha area have been made as a part a larger regional investigation. The purpose of the tests has been to determine the water-bearing characteristics of the aquifer. These characteristics, the coefficients of transmissibility and storage, are used to determine the effect on water levels caused by changes in the rate of withdrawal from the aquifer. Average coefficients of transmissibility and storage determined from the results of 47 pumping tests at five different locations are 23,800 gallons a day per foot, and 0.00039, respectively. The amount of drawdown in the water level at any point caused by pumping a well for a given length of time may be computed by the nonequilibrium formula, using the coefficients and correcting for the effects of boundaries and of any changes in the character of the aquifer. Further study of the geology is needed to determine the location of the recharge area, the location of possible boundaries, and changes in the character of the aquifer.
