To determine the effect of sulfamerazine treatment on growth and to learn whether the drug injures various trout species, brook trout and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) were tested in 1946 and brown trout (Salmo trutta) in 1947. Depletion has been confused at various times with at least ten different ideas associated with it but which, as has has heen pointed out, are not synonymous at all. In defining depletion we must recognize that the term represents a condition and must not he confounded with the cause (overfishing) that leads to this condition or with the symptoms that identify it. Depletion was defined as a reduction, through overfishing, in the level of abundance of the exploitable segment of a stock that prevents the realization of the maximum productive capacity.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the American Fisheries Society","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London, UK","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1946)76[283:ADODOF]2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Van Oosten, J., 1949, A definition of depletion of fish stocks: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 76, no. 1, p. 283-289, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1946)76[283:ADODOF]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"p. 283-289","startPage":"283","endPage":"289","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266597,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1946)76[283:ADODOF]2.0.CO;2"},{"id":130260,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"76","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6af15f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Oosten, John","contributorId":23479,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Oosten","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308567,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The use of copper sulphate is not without danger because of variation in toxicity according to the hardness of the particular water supply; also, the toxicity and efficacy of Roccal have varied considerably in different lots. Neither copper sulphate nor Roccal will cure in one treatcent a well-established epizootic of bacterial gill disease. For these reasons, a series of new disinfectants has been tested in the laboratory in an attempt to find a more effective cure and preventive for bacterial Eill disease. The fact that the annual value of these fish runs to the nation was estimated at $250,000 justified reasonable expenditures to assure their perpetuation. It was found economically infeasible to safely collect and pass adult fish upstream and fingerling fish downstream at the dam because of the tremendous flow of the river and the 320 foot vertical difference in elevation between forebay and tailrace.

The Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project, undertaken by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in 1939, consisted in relocating the anadroumous runs of the upper Columbia River to four major tributaries entering below the Grand Coulee damsite. These streams were believed capable of supporting several times their existing, badly depleted, run.

The plan was predicated upon the assumption that the relocated runs, in conformity with their \"homing tendency\", would return to the lower tributaries rather than attempt to reach their ancestral spawning grounds above Grand Coulee Dam.

This interim report covers the history and accomplishments of the Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project through the initial period of relocating the rune as well as the first four years of the permanent program.

Results obtained to date indicate conclusive success in diverting the upper Columbia fish runs into the accessible lower tributaries. The results also indicate, less conclusively, that - in spite of many existing handicaps - the upper Columbia salmon and steelhead runs may be rehabilitated through the integrated program of natural and artificial propagation incorporated in the Grand Coulee Fish-Maintenance Project.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Fish, F.F., and Hanavan, M.G., 1948, A report upon the Grand Coulee Fish Maintenance Project 1939-1947: Special Scientific Report - Fisheries 55,  63 p.","productDescription":" 63 p.","numberOfPages":"69","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":312623,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":312619,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/assets/11/8950_11072016_160023_Fish.and.Hanavan.1949.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River, Grand Coulee Dam","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.20190429687501,\n              48.980216985374994\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.2513427734375,\n              48.68733411186308\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.4381103515625,\n              48.28319289548349\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.707275390625,\n              48.07440873478364\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.234619140625,\n              47.96050238891509\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.454345703125,\n              47.36115300722623\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.77868652343751,\n              47.68388118858139\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.60864257812501,\n              47.754097979680026\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.674560546875,\n              48.44013426398058\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.66357421875,\n              48.83941303819501\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.66906738281249,\n              48.96579381461063\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.20190429687501,\n              48.980216985374994\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"567930bce4b0da412f4fb529","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fish, F. During that year, one brood came closer to extinction than was realized by more than a few individuals. The immediate causes were not overfishing, hydroelectric power development, or irrigation—although these factors continued to exert their long-standing effects. The direct causes can be attributed to an “act of God” plus—in large measure--lack of knowledge concerning the basic principles of effective artificial propagation. With the security and assurance provided by subsequent developments, those concerned with the Columbia River blueback salmon may be interested in a brief recapitulation of events that transpired during the early 1940s. The well water proved to be unsuitable for hatchery purposes because it was supersaturated with nitrogen, causing \"gas-bubble\" disease among fish subjected to 11. Mr. R. E. Burrows, the district biologist at the Leavenworth laboratory, devised a system by which the water from one well could be used satisfactorily in the hatchery after a  circuitous routing through a mixing chamber with considerable agitation and a settling basin. S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin.  Pumping tests on wells that yield water from the Ordovician and Cambrian sandstones underlying the Milwaukee-Waukesha area have been made as a part a larger regional investigation. The purpose of the tests has been to determine the water-bearing characteristics of the aquifer. These characteristics, the coefficients of transmissibility and storage, are used to determine the effect on water levels caused by changes in the rate of withdrawal from the aquifer. Average coefficients of transmissibility and storage determined from the results of 47 pumping tests at five different locations are 23,800 gallons a day per foot, and 0.00039, respectively. The amount of drawdown in the water level at any point caused by pumping a well for a given length of time may be computed by the nonequilibrium formula, using the coefficients and correcting for the effects of boundaries and of any changes in the character of the aquifer. Further study of the geology is needed to determine the location of the recharge area, the location of possible boundaries, and changes in the character of the aquifer. Collection of water-level and pumpage data is continuing and will serve as a check of the computations using the coefficients of transmissibility and storage.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr4885","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin","usgsCitation":"Drescher, W., 1948, Results of pumping tests on artesian wells in the Milwaukee - Waukesha area, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 48-85, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr4885.","productDescription":"22 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261237,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1948/0085/report.pdf"},{"id":261238,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1948/0085/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","city":"Milwaukee;Waukesha","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505aab79e4b0c8380cd86866","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Drescher, W.J.","contributorId":35713,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drescher","given":"W.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
