The Kingsbury conglomerate and immediately overlying gravels on the east side of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming interfinger eastward with “Wasatch” strata. The latter contain Eocene vertebrates, species of which have been found in the Kingsbury conglomerate. In addition, the “Wasatch” strata contain an Eocene flora that includes the floating fern, Salvinia preauriculata Berry, which, because it is not found in earlier beds, permits recognition of the Paleocene-Eocene boundary in the Rocky Mountains and Plains region.

In a drainage area as large as the Colorado River Basin there are naturally large differences in the quality of the surface waters. The chemical character of the water at six gaging stations on the Colorado River from near the headwaters to near the mouth is shown by the analyses in Table 1.

It will be seen that the concentration of dissolved solids increased from 64 ppm (0.09 tons per ac ft) in the headwaters to 699 ppm (0.95 tons per ac ft) near the mouth.

The concentration of dissolved solids in waters of streams of the Southwestern United Stated fluctuates widely as the stream discharge changes. These fluctuations may be extensive in a period of a few days or even a few hours. Data in this paper show the extent of the day‐to‐day changes in specific conductance and discharge of the Rio Grande at San Acacia, New Mexico, during the spring run‐off period of 1945. Data also are presented to show rapid fluctuations in concentration for the Pecos River near Artesia, New Mexico, the Gila River near Bylas, Arizona, and the Rio Grande at San Acacia during typical summer months. Hourly changes in chloride and discharge are shown for a day of approximately normal flow for the Pecos River near Malaga, New Mexico, and for a 36‐hour period of extremely low flow for the Gila River near Fort Thomas, Arizona.

Iwo Jima, in the western Pacific Ocean, consists of Motoyama, a broad volcanic cone, at the north, and Mt. Suribachi at the south, with an undulating isthmus between. Motoyama is largely light-gray-buff tuff. A thick andesitic lava flow under Suribachi, exposed in several places, is overlain by a thick deposit of cinder and scoria. The isthmus (called Tidorigahara by the Japanese) is underlain by more than 200 feet of loose black volcanic ash and fine cinder derived from Suribachi. Several small coral reefs are located about 340 and 110 feet above present sea level.

Iwo Jima first came into existence, probably early in Pleistocene time, with the building above sea level of the tuff cone of Motoyama. Quite late in the active life of Motoyama, volcanic activity on the southwestern flank resulted in the formation of Suribachi. This activity may have started with the welling up of the andesitic lava which underlies Suribachi. Following the major eruption of Suribachi, relative sea level changed, and the sea stood about 360 feet higher than at present. The broad cone of Motoyama was beveled; the relative sea level then dropped 240 feet, with minor halts to about 120 feet above present level. As the island rose, Suribachi burst forth in its last stage of explosive activity. Wave erosion cut deeply into the andesite flow of Suribachi, and a prominent bench level was formed 120 feet above present sea level.

The Japanese on the island were often faced with serious water shortages. Americans drilled wells and obtained moderately large supplies of usable water. The temperature of the water ranges from 105° to 179° F., and the water is somewhat mineralized. The most favorable area for ground-water development is the isthmus.

Systematic surveys made at Bikini before and after the atomi bomb tests (Operation Crossroads) in the summer of 1946 afforded an unusual opportunity to examine the reefs and islands of one of the larger atolls of Micronesia. The existing reef appears to be developed on an older surface that extends as a terrace into the lagoon and beyond the seaward margin of the reef. A sketch map shows the distribution of the terraces in relation to the existing reefs.

Reef zonation is briefly described, and a classification of reef types based upon the characteristics of the marginal zone is presented. Illustrations are given from Bikini's reefs and those of near-by atolls. A sketch map shows the distribution of the reef types at Bikini relative to prevailing winds and currents. The processes of reef growth and unusual areas wherein the existing reef appears to be undergoing destruction are also described and figured.

Cryptocrystalline magnesite occurs as relatively small dense, white masses in a Tertiary volcanic tuff, here named the Currant tuff, in White Pine and Nye counties, 29 miles southwest of Ely, Nevada. The deposits are small, but some of the magnesite is of very high quality with almost no iron or aluminum. However, much of the magnesite is mixed with dolomite and calcite, and a serpentinelike mineral occurs in one of the deposits in sufficient abundance to be of possible use in ceramics.

In scattered areas the tuff has been altered by solutions rich in magnesium and bicarbonic acid to dolomite, magnesite, magnesium silicate, and calcite. Mineral and chemical characteristics are the same throughout the entire rock assemblage of flows and tuffs, suggesting that all the rocks have been derived from the same parent magma. The tuff formation, which ranges in thickness from a few feet to over 400 feet, occurs between two groups of volcanic flows here referred to as the lower volcanics and the upper volcanics. The lower volcanics is composed mainly of flows of hypersthene dacite, but in the southwestern part of the area flows of a hypersthene andesite of balsaltic habit occur between the dacite and the overlying Currant tuff. The upper volcanics which overlie the Currant tuff consist of porphyritic quartz latite and an overlying massive latite crystal tuff. The Currant tuff containing the magnesite has both unmodified and reworked tuff members.

The formation of hydrothermal dolomite, magnesite, and deweylite is discussed in detail, and the physical chemistry of solutions containing calcium, magnesium, and carbon dioxide is applied in an explanation of the origin of magnesium-rich solutions.

Fumarolic gases have altered some rocks to a mixture of opal and clay minerals and have cemented tuff with opal, calcite, zeolite, and iron oxides.

The principal activity of the Committee during the year was the arranging and presentation of a symposium on methods of estimating ground‐water supplies. Jacob, Chairman, is given as Appendix A. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Section of Hydrology in June 1946, this Subcommittee of the Committee on Ground Water was changed to the Committee on Permeability of the Section of Hydrology, with Jacob continuing as Chairman. This will give the new Committee much greater latitude in dealing with a subject which is of concern to several of the Research Committees.

The Edwards limestone, and to a lesser extent the Comanche Peak limestone and the lower part of the Glen Rose limestone below, all of Lower Cretaceous age, form one of the most extensive ground‐water reservoirs in Texas. As a result of normal faulting, these formations are connected by underground channels to form a hydrologic unit which is partly artesian and partly unconfined. Observations in Comal County show that the development of the reservoir by solution is closely related to the geologic history, in which complex faulting and the disconformity between the Edwards and Georgetown limestones are important factors. Various phases of development are shown in different fault blocks, depending upon length of exposure at the surface. The Edwards limestone, which contains the main channels of underground drainage, is almost uniformly permeable from top to bottom, whereas the older, but more recently exposed lower part of the Glen Rose limestone is generally relatively impermeable except where exposed by mature streams.

During the summer of 1946 the writer studied the ground‐water resources of Schoharie County, New York, as a part of the program of ground‐water investigation being carried on in cooperation between the United States Geological Survey and the New York State Water Power and Control Commission. Because the outcrop belt of Devonian and Upper Silurian carbonate rocks is wider in Schoharie County than in other parts of the State, the effects of solution on these formations is better displayed here than elsewhere. The conditions described below probably apply on a smaller scale to the areas to the west, where the upper formations are cut out by an unconformity, and to the east in the Helderberg area, where similar effects have been described by Goldring [see “References” at end of paper, 1935]. However, it is probable that solution in the limestones in the Hudson Valley is not comparable because of the folded condition of the rocks.

The basic principles of the idealized hydrologic cycle are reviewed with emphasis on storage and movement of water in the soil. A distinction is made between ground‐water runoff and overland runoff in terms of storage and lag, expressed as accumulated deviations from uniform flow over a period of several years. These functions are presented for the period 1920 through 1945 for three rivers in central Oregon: John Day, Deschutes, and Metolius, which exemplify minimum, moderate, and maximum effects, respectively, of storage and lag. The Metolius River is shown to have extremely small fluctuations in discharge from year to year, ascribed to a great portion of its flow being derived from ground‐water runoff; and its response to fluctuations in annual precipitation lags behind that of the John Day River by about five years. Specific techniques and measures for improving seasonal water supply forecasts are suggested.

The diminution in runoff in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Columbia River Basin, during the past 50 years, and its hydrologic significance are discussed in this paper. An analysis of the rainfall‐runoff relations for the Basin is made in order to explain the different influence of short‐ and long‐term precipitation factors on the diminution of runoff. The indicated effects of long‐term precipitation may reflect the influence of ground‐water storage.

Abstract

The quality of natural waters, as judged by the dissolved mineral content, is quite varied throughout the Northwest. The concentrations of dissolved solids range from less than 50 ppm for many of the surface waters in Washington and Oregon, to several thousand ppm in the alkaline lakes of these states. On the whole, the quality of the natural waters is good but in some areas the waters have become unsatisfactory for many purposes, including irrigation, through contamination with wastes from industrial processes, which may include drainage from irrigated lands.

Coalification involves the genetic and metamorphic history of coal beds. The plant materials that form coal may be, in part, simply incorporated, or they may be present in vitrinized or fusinized form. Materials contributing to coal differ in their response to diagenetic and metamorphic agencies and the three essential processes of coalification are called incorporation, vitrinization, and fusinization. The processes are defined on the basis of important petrographic characteristics. A diagram is given illustrating the extent of change in the plant material, in comparison with diagenetic and metamorphic intensity. Since coal beds generally include various proportions of the diverse materials resulting from the three processes, practical classification of coal is intimately related to the part each process has played.

Early in May 1947, a United States Geological Survey field party of five was flown by ski plane to the headwaters of the Utukok River in northwestern Alaska, about 200 miles southwest of Barrow. Three 18–foot canvas boats of a special folding design were taken in along with enough equipment for four months. Food caches had been flown in to six localities on the 200–mile–long river a short time before the group landed. When the “break–up” came late in May the party started down the river working out the geology of the area from a series of 18 camps which were established before reaching the Arctic Ocean in August.

During the season 17 archaeological sites were discovered. It is believed that most of these sites are of Eskimo origin and are probably fairly recent. However, an important exception is a well–made Folsom point, announcement of which has been made.

Standard chemical tests and spectroscopic analyses of altered Tertiary lavas that occur above blind ore bodies in the East Tintic district, Utah, have failed to show any evidence of the mineralization in the underlying dolomites. A new technique involving dithizone was used in the field to test ammonium acetate extracts of crushed samples of the lava for soluble heavy metals, with significant results. Concentrations of heavy metals, believed to be chiefly zinc, with some lead and rarely copper (?), were found in pyritized rhyolite above and up-rake from known blind ore bodies, and were lacking in similarly altered rhyolite underlain by barren rocks. An incompletely prospected area of pyritic alteration shows a definite pattern of positive tests and seems worthy of further exploration. The theory and practice of the dithizone method as used in the field is described briefly.

Black-sand beach concentrates are more widely distributed along the beaches of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia than has been recorded heretofore, as shown by a map prepared by airplane reconnaissance. The map shows also that the black sands diminish in abundance northward, that their distribution is in part related to the configuration of the shoreline, and that they are found only on beaches along the open sea.

The Spar Valley fluorspar district in the Eagle Mountains, Hudspeth County, Texas, is one of the few in the western United States containing bedding-replacement fluorspar deposits. The deposits at Spar Valley resemble the bedding-replacement deposits of the Cave in Rock fluorspar district of southern Illinois. Two distinct deposits, the North and the South ore bodies, are present. The North ore body is larger and has been developed by diamond drilling and mining; the following statements apply chiefly to it.The fluorspar partly replaces a sequence of three sandy limestones interbedded with four calcareous shales in the lower part of the Edwards limestone of Lower Cretaceous age. The fluoritized beds, which dip 40 degrees SW in conformity with underlying limestone, are overlain by thick impermeable gouge along a bedding-plane fault dipping slightly more than 40 degrees SW. The high-grade beds were derived from the sandy limestones, and the low-grade beds, which contain as much as 28 percent of CaF 2 , were formed from the calcareous shales. The selectiveness of replacement by the fluorine-bearing solutions, due to differences in the chemical composition, texture, and degree of brecciation of the original rock, resulted in bedding-replacement deposits of variable fluorite content.A reduction in volume, which accompanied the replacement, led to the development of many cavities. During the later stages of fluoritization these cavities were lined with fluorite crystals, early fluorite grains were coated and interstices between them were filled, and fluorite veins were formed in the ore beds and the underlying dense limestone.

A semiquantitative colorimetric analytical method using dithizone to detect traces of heavy metals in natural water is described. Although reagents of exceptional purity are required, only simple equipment is needed and the test can be made in a few minutes in the field. A combined mixed color and mono color technique makes the test suitable for a wide range of concentrations. The test is very sensitive; as little as 0.01 part per million of either copper, lead, zinc or any combination of the three metals can be detected readily.The dithizone test permits rapid field identification of drainage elements which contain significant concentrations of heavy metals. An example is given showing how the test can be used to trace the heavy metal content of a drainage system back to its source. It is possible that, under favorable conditions, the field test may facilitate prospecting by detecting metals discharged by the weathering of hidden ore bodies. However, until the method receives further investigation, it would be premature to predict its value.
