The main objective of this cruise was to study the distribution and composition of ferromanganese oxide crusts. Preliminary results of managanese crust composition are reported by Schwab et al. (1985) and detailed studies are in preparation (Schwab et al., 1986). </p><p>A total of seven seafloor edifices were studied using 12 khz, 3.5 khz and air gun seismic reflection, chain dredge and box corer. Bathymetry and ship track lines are presented by Schwab and Bailey (1985). Of the seven edifices surveyed two support atolls (Majuro and Taongi) and one is a tiny island (Jemo). Dredge locations and water depths are given in Table 1 and dredge locations are shown in Figure 1. Due to equipment failures depths of dredge hauls were limited to shallow depth for all except the first two sites occupied. Recovery consisted mostly of young, poorly-consolidated limestone of fore-reef slope deposit and minor volcanogenic breccia and loose talus. The breccia and pieces of talus are thickly encrusted with ferromanganese oxide, whereas the young limestone is only coated by a thin layer. Four of the seven sites surveyed yielded volcanic rock. The volcanic rock, volumetrically a minor part of each dredge haul, consists mostly of lapilli and cobble-size clasts in a calcareous matrix or as loose talus. Runoff to the lake, mainly runoff from melting snow and glacier ice, filled the lake to an elevation of 83 feet above sea level by October 8, when the ice dam failed. The lake level rose at an average rate of 0.6 ft/day, and average daily inflow to the lake was calculated to be 16,500 cu ft/sec. After failure of the ice dam, the water level fell to the former high tide level of Russell Fiord within 24 hours. Average discharge through the breach in the ice dam during a 4-hr period of maximum water level decline is estimated to have been 3.8 million cu ft/sec. The formation and breakout of the lake is expected to be repeated as the Hubbard Glacier continues to advance, though the timing of the phenomenon cannot be predicted with certainty. This report was prepared to summarize well records and water levels for the network and to show the location and density of the wells. Data for 299 wells are tabulated in this report, generally within the interval 1947-85. The well records include altitude of land surface, date drilled, well depth, use of site, use of water, casing type, casing size, casing depth, top and bottom of perforations, principal aquifer, year water-level measurements began and measurement frequency, year chemical analysis began, type of analysis, analyzing agency, and type of logs available. The water-level data include date of measurement and depth to water below land surface. Well location and density are shown on a map at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The models are based on growing condition preferences and on psychological inferences regarding grower behavior. Experiences of local law officials were used to derive the initial model, which was updated and improved as data from crop finds were archived and statistically analyzed. The predictive models are changed as crop locations are moved in response to the pressures of law enforcement. </p><p>The models use spatial data in a raster geographic information system. The spatial data are derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's US GeoData, standard 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps, interpretations of aerial photographs, and thematic maps. Updating of cultural patterns, canopy closure, and other dynamic features is conducted through interpretation of aerial photographs registered to the 7.5-minute quadrangle base. The model is used to numerically weight various data layers that have been processed using spread functions, edge definition, and categorization. </p><p>The building of the spatial data base, model development, model application, product generation, and use are collectively referred to as the Area Reduction Program (ARP). The Decree authorizes diversions of water from the Delaware River basin and requires compensating releases from certain reservoirs of the City of New York to be made under the supervision and direction of the River Master. Reports to the Court, not less frequently than annually, were stipulated. During the 1985 report year, December 1, 1984, to November 30, 1985, precipitation and runoff varied from below average to above average in the Delaware River basin. For the year as a whole, precipitation was near average. Runoff was below average. Operations were under a status of drought warning or drought from January 23, 1984, through the end of the report year. Below-normal precipitation the first half of the year resulted in decreased storage in the reservoirs to record low levels by March 1, 1985. Storage remained at record low levels from March through September. Above-normal precipitation in September and November served to break the drought and increase storage into the normal zone of the operating curves for the reservoirs. Diversions from the Delaware River basin by New York City did not exceed those authorized by the terms of the Amended Decree or those invoked by the several emergency conservation measures throughout the year. There were no diversions from the Delaware River basin by New Jersey during the year. Releases were made as directed by the River Master at rates designed to meet the Montague flow objective on 82 days between June 14 and September 28. Releases were made at conservation rates or at rates designed to relieve thermal stress in the streams downstream from the reservoirs at other times.
