The immediate purpose of the work has been to collect and interpret stratigraphic and structural data pertinent to drilling in the Umiat area. </p><p>Field studies were made during the summers of 1944 and 1945 in the drainage areas of the Colville, Killik, Chandler, and. Anaktuvuk Rivers (fig. 1). Paleontologic and microlithologic studies, together with stratigrahica1 and structural analysis of the areas, were carried out in the petroleum laboratory in Fairbanks. This work led. to preparation of a preliminary report submitted. in December, 1945.</p><p>Additional detailed studies, in the Survey laboratories and offices in Washington, D. C., have resulted in some modification of earlier conclusions and changes in illustrations. The changes are minor and have no significant bearing on drilling in the Umiat area.</p><p>The present report is accompanied. by revised conies of figures 1, 2, 3 (sheet 1) and. 5. These illustrations should be substituted for the comparable figures of the preliminary report. Figures 3 (sheet 2), 4, and. 6 of the earlier report stand unchanged and should, be added to the illustrations accompanying the present report.</p><p>It is believed that work to date has revealed the general geologic picture of the area and. that the sequence of Upper Cretaceous rocks is established. The section of rocks in Umiat Test No. 1 has been approximately located within the sequence.</p><p>This report, and the work on which it is based was done under the supervision of George O. The main object of this investigation was to delineate, in as much detail as possible, the Umiat anticline in the are of Umiat Test No. 1.</p><p>Outcrops in the Umiat area are few. Direct compass readings for strikes and dips of bedding cannot be trusted since cross-bedding. slumping, and frost-heaving are the rule rather than the exception. `structural data was obtained by use of a plane table and alidade by the three-point method. On the accompanying geologic map many of the strikes and dips shown were obtained by solving three-point problems. The writer found no evidence of deposition of any of the fanglomerates by major streams and no evidence that any of the present streams enter the basin through Triassic-filled remnants of Triassic valleys. Available evidence indicates that streams which deposited the Newark fanglomerates were relatively short and steep, consequent on the northwest border fault scarp or flexure. Variations in lithologic character of the fanglomerates were due largely to the rock types exposed along the margin of the northwest highland block. The lithologic character of the Newark sediments and particularly of the basal Stockton supports this hypothesis.&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of S. Geological Survey Party No. 4 covered the area between 68° 30' and 69° 08' N. latitude and between 154° and 155°20' W. longitude during the period May 18 to September 2. Traverses were confined mainly to the valleys of the Kurupa, Colville, and Oolamnagavik Rivers inasmuch as very little rock is exposed in the interstream areas. This report is limited to the Colville River valley area between the Kura and Killik Rivers, and to a stratigraphic section exposed. on the Kurupa 7-12 miles south of the Colville.</p><p>A final report will be prepared by April 1, 1947, on the total area and will include discussions of the stratigraphy and structure of Upper Cretaceous formations A through D on the Oolamnagavik and Kurupa, the stratigraphy of Formation D on the Colville, and the Lower Cretaceous and Triassic rocks. Separation and identification of heavy minerals from the sandstones and conglomerates, binocular and petrographic microscope examinations of specimens, identification of megafossils, and separation and identification of microfossils, if any, will be undertaken. Detailed examination of all aerial photos will be made to trace out structures and formations in the adjacent areas to the east, north, and west. It seems probable that close correlation between this area, the Killik River area, and Maybe Creek area will be possible by extrapolating field and aerial photo data. From 1942 through 1944 the United States Geological Survey made detailed studies of most of the&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">ore</span><span>&nbsp;deposits and&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">at</span><span>&nbsp;a few of the more promising localities diamond‐drilling operations were carried on by the United States Bureau of Mines. The deposits are for the most part small and irregular but of relatively high grade. The chief&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">ore</span><span>&nbsp;minerals are magnetite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite, and the gangue consists largely of skarn minerals, including garnet, epidote, diopside, and hornblende. The Honomanu volcanic series consists largely of olivine basalt, with less abundant basalt and picrite-basalt containing large phenocrysts of olivine. In the Kula and Hana volcanic series there are some basalts and olivine basalts, but the characteristic rocks are andesites and picrite-basalt containing abundant phenocrysts of augite as well as olivine. New chemical analyses of six specimens of Kula lavas are given. Five are andesites, and one a picrite-basalt. Each of the six rocks is described in detail. Minas Gerais, Goiaz, and Bahia are the principal producing states. Minor quantities are obtained from Espirito Santo and Northeastern Brazil.</p><p>Primary veins and pegmatites yield secondary deposits of eluvial, colluvial, and alluvial origin. The veins range in form from tabular or lenticular bodies, pipes, and pockets to composite lodes and bedded masses. The mineralogy is simple; accessory minerals are few and rare. A small proportion of clear crystals, occurring in vein masses of milky quartz, furnishes the commercial product. Filling, rather than replacement, is believed to be the dominant emplacement process. Pegmatites yield a little commercial quartz. Both residual (eluvial) and water-laid (alluvial) quartz deposits are economically important.</p><p>Crystals range up to 40 metric tons in weight; those of 1 to 5 tons occur in many deposits. Quartz from every locality studied is twinned on both the Brazil and Dauphiné laws. Phantoms are abundant.</p><p>Field studies reveal little difference between the final quartz from some pegmatites and that from veins. It is inferred that the veins may grade into pegmatites at depth and that both are products of the same mineralogenic epoch. Present evidence does not justify a closer dating for the formation of the veins and pegmatites than the early Paleozoic.</p><p>There are few large quartz mines in Brazil. The impressive quartz production during the war years came from many small, scattered workings. Mining methods are primitive, and mechanization was feasible in relatively few areas. The ratio of mine-clean crystal to the total quantity of excavated material varies between 1:1000 and 1:100,000, with an over-all average for the best mines of the order of 1:10,000. Cost of mining ranges from $2 to $10 a kilogram. The average export value during 1944 was $12.50 per kilogram.</p><p>The potential reserves of quartz crystal in Brazil are large, but actual or visual reserves in known districts are small. The strong eruptive activity that began in mid‐March, marked on March 17 by the formation of a new boca with a short‐lived volcancito and by external changes in the form of the cone, continued until April 18, The period April 12–18 was marked by bomb‐showers and explosive blasts at the rate of ten to 15 a minute, mostly from the south vent of the double crater. Most of the bombs fell into the north crater and on the north flank of the cone. From April 19 to 26 the activity was, in general, very weak, and little ash and few bombs were projected beyond the rim of the cone, Explosions were very rare, and the weak vapor column from the Volcano was accompanied by a dull surf‐like roar. Most of the vapor emerged from a small vent near the center of the divide between the two coalescing craters. A heavy ash column, at times approaching in intensity that of 1943, emerged from the Volcano from April 27 to 29. The ash was erupted from both the north and south vents of the crater, though the south vent is believed to have contributed the most. This differential equation is integrated to obtain two steady state solutions, one for the case of a well in an infinite aquifer, and the other for the case where the head is maintained constant along an outer boundary concentric with the well. In the second case, the solution of the non‐steady state is also obtained for flow towards a well discharging at a steady rate, the initial state being one of uniform head distribution. Hobbs propounded in 1910, is today still the only definitely formulated theory concerning the atmospheric movements that take place over an ice sheet of large extent. It stands chiefly on deductive grounds and contains several features that to climatologists as well as to glaciologists have always seemed questionable. Aside from the need of its verification for scientific reasons, there is now also urgent practical need for reliable information about the weather conditions that prevail over the ice sheet of Greenland, for Greenland lies athwart several of the great air routes of the future. In this paper, accordingly, the glacial anticyclone theory is first analyzed and then confronted with the facts of observation that are now at hand, especially those reported from the fixed meteorological stations which were maintained in the interior of Greenland during the 1930s.</p><p>In this, the first part of the paper, the meteorological data from the Eismitte station of the German Wegener Expedition are reviewed. The second part will cover the areological data of that expedition and the similar material from the other ice‐cap stations. The conclusions reached are that there is no evidence of a virtually permanent “glacial anticyclone” centered over the Greenland ice sheet. On the contrary, there is consistent evidence from all parts of Greenland that the weather over the ice sheet is controlled by alternating cyclonic and anticyclonic movements. Cyclonic activity is most intense in southern Greenland and weakest in northern Greenland. The entire ice sheet is supplied with snow brought by rising maritime air masses, not by air descending from the upper troposphere.
